Overview

As Jackson Hole, Wyoming, gallery owner Alix Thorssen plans an art auction, she is plunged into a bitter feud between ranchers and environmentalists-- and an old mystery involving the strange death of a teenage boy. A reclusive artist delivers a stunning painting of a blue wolf at the auction, and asks Alix for a favor: investigate the accidental shooting of Derek Wylie, whose death twenty-five years earlier went oddly uninvestigated. Alix does some digging and finds disturbing clues to a murder and cover-up. It leads by tangled threads to the heated animosity in Jackson Hole, as the artist and her painting become the catalyst in a brewing storm of range, guilt, and dark secrets left behind in a trail of old blood.

Editorial Reviews

San Diego Union-Tribune
A few writers are gifted with a feel for place that transforms locale from mere background into a vital element of the story itself, as important as the human characters who inhabit it (like) Tony Hillerman and James Lee Burke. To their number add Lise McClendon, who has taken the small resort town of Jackson Hole and the Wyoming wilderness that surrounds it, and made it her own. McClendon weaves a persuasive story, as haunting as the landscape it occupies.
FOREWORD Magazine
What McClendon does very well is create an interesting, complex character in Alix Thorssen. What elevates the novel overall is the pounding, primeval force of wolves that runs throughout the book: predatory, threatening, mystical, political, mythological. The novel gains in resonance and strength by the way these wolf images pulse beneath the surface of the writing.
Carrie Bissey
Wyoming flora and fauna are lovingly described alongside sharp dialogue and good pacing in this readable, down-to-earth mystery, which is refreshingly free of a histrionic heroine-in-danger finale. Recommend to fans of the outdoorsy and witty Nevada Barr and Dana Stabenow novels.

Lise McClendon can really piece together the evidence in a mystery.

I found this book to be highly confusing. According to the B&N review it is in line with Nevada Barr. No way. The beginning wasn't too bad but then toward the end the women started using the most awful language...and I don't mean s--t, d--n, hell etc. Words that I didn't think a woman would use. I am not a prude but is this really necessary? This is the first McClendon I have read but it will be my last. Marianne
