Bluegrass Goes to Town

The cheeky title may suggest bluegrass gussied up for a pop audience, but in reality, it's the other way around. As the eloquent cover versions here show, pop, rock, and blues artists such as the Grateful Dead, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, and the Beatles have always shared a kinship with roots music. Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pedersen (Hillman being former Byrd Chris Hillman) open things up with a rustic take on the Dead's "Friend of the Devil." Spectrum, whose members include mandolin virtuoso Jimmy Gaudreau and banjo visionary Bela Fleck, take "Bye Bye Love" out to the countryside, slightly to the left of the Everlys' honky-tonk-flavored rock 'n' roll hit. Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" gets a toe-tapping treatment from the Rice Brothers that underscores the song's country melody. Those who have always perceived a pronounced country strain in Lennon-McCartney songs -- certainly from Rubber Soul onward -- will hear their point of view affirmed here, not once but twice: first, on an immaculate rendition of "I Will" by Tony Furtado and Alison Krauss; second, by Joe Val and the Bluegrass Boys' bristling high-lonesome workout of "What Goes On." Rob Ickes and Tim O'Brien have a mesmerizing moment on their chilling treatment of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." Nothing, however, tops John Hartford's laconic, folksy treatment of "Piece of My Heart" -- yes, the heart-shredding "Piece of My Heart" made famous by Janis Joplin. Good songs will out, in any language.
