Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Private Practice)
Description: This little paperback book will be a nice introductory reference for medical students starting their dermatology rotation. It is chocked full of good clinical pictures of common dermatoses and an accompanying brief description of the entity and treatments.
Purpose: The purpose is to give a few pertinent facts about skin disorders to the novice starting to study dermatology.
Audience: The audience is medical students and medical supporting staff in a dermatology setting.
Features: Topics are grouped under simple categories: neoplasms, infection, etc., so that one does not need to be familiar with dermatological jargon and classifications in order to look up a rash. There is a nice succinct discussion on the structure of the basement membrane and a handy table summarizing how to do a gram stain. Some of the photographs are a little blurry or too far away to see detail.
Assessment: The book is very well suited for someone with no prior dermatology knowledge. This is a good beginner book and a good value for the price.
