I have been attempting to learn some 'lead blues guitar' for 3 - 4 years. I've found some good books, but Mr. Gelling's approach really fits my preferred learning style. I have been able to play pentatonic scales for a long time, but did not know what to do with them. Mr Gelling's examples are good sounding blues licks that move around the neck demonstrating how to move between the different forms of the scales. My only complaint is it would be nice to have two tracks per example, one with and one without the guitar to allow practice with just the backup. Overall, this book is probably over the head of true beginners, but if your interest is learning some decent electric blues licks, this is the best book I've seen.
This is a good book to learn blues fundamentals without being bored to death. Peter Gelling focuses on the pentatonic scales and leads the reader through the maze.. better than most books because it doesn't focus on a bunch of chord charts (I get bogged down trying to learn all the derived shapes) and since blues are played mostly with the pentatonic scale, why not focus on learning it to begin with rather than abstract chord possibilities? Highly recommend this book to get a start in blues playing.
