The story line holds the readers' interest by adding just the right amount of suspense. Kendall and her aunt, Mrs. Barnett, travel to Newton to stay at the Simmons' old farmhouse. It is a historical old "dog run" style house built in 1906. During their visit, they get accosted by one stranger in the park and another abusive man makes them wary when they are buying hand-crafted items from his wife. The main conflict is that forest fires are being set by someone. Bo, a black Labrador retriever, helps solve the mystery by discovering evidence that is vital to the case.
