“Among the many fictional police detectives beset by grave personal and professional stresses, Fluke and his team stand out.”
Investigating a severed hand found on the 3rd green of a Cumbrian golf course was not how Detective Inspector Avison Fluke had planned to spend his Saturday. So when a secretive unit from London swoop in quoting national security, he’s secretly pleased.
But trouble is never far away. A young woman arrives at his lakeside cabin with a cryptic message: a code known to only a handful of people and it forces Fluke back into the investigation he’s just been barred from.
In a case that will change his life forever, Fluke immerses himself in a world of new age travellers, corrupt cops and domestic extremists. Before long he’s alienated his entire team, made a pact with the devil and been arrested under the terrorism act.
But Fluke is only getting started. A voice has called out to him from beyond the grave and he has no intention of ignoring it.
“Everything you want in a British procedural: a dark world, a tangled case, a clear and logical solution, and a deeply flawed hero who’s still well worth rooting for.”
“A forceful new voice in British crime fiction.”
CARO RAMSAY (author of the Anderson and Costello novels)
“Fluke is my favourite fictional detective.”

OMG just look at this cover .. I was freaked out just looking at it but it worked because I couldn’t wait to read Body Breaker. This is the second in the DI Avison Fluke series and I confess I haven’t read the first YET! I didn’t feel as though I was dumped in the deep end because this is so well written, but I intend reading Born In A Burial Gown as soon as I can for my own enjoyment. With a name like Avison Fluke you just know he is going to be a great character, hard-nosed, straight-talking with a sense of humour. I found myself drawn to him instantly. The prologue grasped me and made me put aside some time to get engrossed in this book. Fluke is called to investigate a discovered hand on the golf course (as you do!) so from the gruesome find the story escalates. He and long time buddy and partner DS Towler have a such a deep, meaningful relationship that it makes it so easy to drift into their lives and get absorbed in the action. Towler is fabulous and they balance each other brilliantly. The writing is superb, good old down to earth crime/thriller/police procedure told in a such a fashion it screws your mind. I was on the edge of my seat and cursing a few of the folk, one in particular who really made me squirm. A good solid story, excellent ending that leaves me wanting more! I have yet more favourite detectives to add to my list. Thanks so much to the Mike Craven and Noelle Holten for my ARC I read and reviewed voluntarily.
