The author gives a fascinating glimpse into a culture that is foreign to many Americans. The characters are real and endearing, and the relationships ring true. I would enjoy reading about these people even if there wasn't a mystery to solve.

I read the book pretty quickly because it captured my attention. Amusing and interesting characters. A rather puzzling murder. Why? Well, no one liked her, but why now? Why there? The veteran character is quite warmly portrayed. A good read.

cozy-mystery, family-dynamics, friendship, usa, law-enforcement, murder, recipes, laugh-out-loud What fun! The impending bride and her mother are nutz, the bride's cousin makes the mob look honest, Maggie is worried about problems with her boyfriend, and then there's the murders. The characters certainly are, the setting is marvelous, the plot twists are unexpected, and the herrings are all red. There is no problem for a reader who dives into this one without reading the other, and no problem should you also discover that you bought this one a while ago but it got legs and walked off before you even read it! Well this time I got the audio. Meredith Mitchell does a fantastic narration.

There's a very simple reason why Body on the Bayou, the second book in the Cajun Country Mystery Series by author Ellen Byron, has so many wonderful reviews - it's a great read! The author has a way of weaving a story that leaves you laughing out loud while quickly turning the pages because you just can't wait to find out what happens next. There's romance in the air in Pelican, Louisiana: things are progressing for Magnolia Marie (Maggie) and Bo, Grand-mere has two gentlemen who are smitten with her, Gaynell has a burgeoning relationship with a new resident in town, and Vanessa and Rufus are getting married.....but all is not as rosy as it could be when (surprise, surprise!!!) a couple of murders occur and the very pregnant bride is accused on her way to the wedding! Oh, and did I mention that Maggie is also the maid-of-honor, on duty 24/7 to answer Vanessa's every call/text/email/whim?!? Very fast-paced cozy that kept me on the edge of my seat, and I can honestly say that with each book in this series I have never guessed the murderer until the end, which is the sign of a very well-written mystery. Well done, Ms. Byron!

Title: Body on the Bayou - Cajun Country Mystery Book 2 Author: Ellen Byron Published: 9-13-2016 Publisher: Crooked Lane Books Pages: 320 Genre: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Sub Genre: Women Sleuths, Cozy Mystery; Amateur Sleuths ISBN: 13: 9781629537689 ASIN: B01H082DPY Reviewer: DelAnne Reviewed For: NetGalley Rating: 4.5 I received a copy of "Body on the Bayou" from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review. Description From the Publisher: The Crozats feared that past murders at Crozat Plantation B&B might spell the death of their beloved estate, but they’ve managed to survive the scandal. Now there’s a très bigger story in Pelican, Louisiana: the upcoming nuptials between Maggie Crozat’s nemesis, Police Chief Rufus Durand, and her co-worker, Vanessa Fleer. When everyone else refuses the job of being Vanessa's Maid of Honor, Maggie reluctantly takes up the title and finds herself tasked with a long list of duties--the most important of which is entertaining Vanessa’s cousin, Ginger Fleer-Starke. But just days before the wedding, Ginger’s lifeless body is found on the bayou and the Pelican PD, as well as the Crozats, have another murder mystery on their hands. There’s a gumbo-potful of suspects, including an ex-Marine with PTSD, an annoying local newspaper reporter, and Vanessa’s own sparkplug of a mother. But when it looks like the investigation is zeroing in on Vanessa as the prime suspect, Maggie reluctantly adds keeping the bride-to-be out of jail to her list of Maid of Honor responsibilities in Body on the Bayou, Ellen Byron's funny and engaging follow up to her critically acclaimed novel Plantation Shudders. My Review of "Body on the Bayou": Ellen Byron has managed to bring together a diverse cast of characters that work well and are believable. She has portrayed her little corner of the bayou to depict the ageless charm and mysteries of the Bayou. Having visited the are regularly when I was younger, it brought back memories of my cousins and I exploring and the places we saw. I loved this series and started reading it with "Plantation Shudders" because of its settings. I would recommend this book to any lover of the cozy genre. It is th perfect light read filled with suspense and a touch of humor.

Dollycas’s Thoughts We return to Pelican, Louisiana and the Crozat Plantation B&B. Our protagonist Maggie Crozat has become maid of honor for Vanessa, one of her coworkers, because everyone else ran away from the job. With Vanessa due to deliver a baby soon, she has heaped most of the wedding plans on Maggie’s shoulders. Vanessa and her mom both expect Maggie to just do everything they ask and do it immediately. She also has Vanessa’s cousin Ginger and her entourage staying at the family B&B. When the cousin is found dead just a couple of days before the wedding and the police suspect list keeps growing it looks like Maggie will be adding “find the killer” to her long list of duties. First let me say, Maggie has the patience of a saint. Dealing with Vanessa, her mom and the groom, Police Chief Rufus Durand, would have most people throwing in the towel before they completed the first task. Ellen Byron has created some very multidimensional characters and their growth from the first book is very clear. The undercover romance of Maggie and Bo continues and hits some bumps as his ex-wife comes to town. His autistic son is excelling in his art lessons with Maggie though and she enjoys their time together. Her family pulls together in the story not only to help Maggie but they also take in some new kittens and puppies that were found by the bayou. These little guys stole everyone’s heart. She took all the characters and wrapped them into a complex mystery. The ending caught me completely by surprise due to some very intricate twists and turns. As I eliminated suspects in my mind a twist had me seeing things differently. The covers of both the books in this series are beautiful and made me want to escape right into these stories. I have never been to Louisiana but the covers and author descriptions make me feel like I have been there. She also describes the glorious Cajun cuisine in the most mouthwatering way. Yes, there are recipes at the end of the story. Love this series and hope to return to Pelican soon!

Maggie Crozat helps her family run the Crozat Plantation Bed and Breakfast. Since things have settled down after a recent scandal, Maggie has been coerced to become the maid of honor to her sometime nemesis, Vanessa. Vanessa is seven months pregnant and set to marry Police Chief Rufus Durand. One of Maggie’s many maid of honor duties is to look after Ginger, Vanessa’s cousin. When Ginger is found dead and Vanessa becomes a suspect, Maggie needs to find the culprit so Vanessa doesn’t have the baby in jail. I really liked this mystery. It was witty, intriguing and the ending was a total surprise. I loved that the characters I hated the most became the victims. That usually never happens. I felt that Maggie was too much of a pushover. She doesn’t know how to say “No!” I also had a problem with her secret relationship with Bo. I would love to see how Maggie’s character evolves in the next installment to the series. An Advanced Reading Copy was received in exchange for an honest review.
