Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Readers can discover everything they want to know and more about the legendary Bogeyman when they pick up this book. Chapter one contains explanations about what the Bogeyman or Bogeywoman is by actually telling what it is not. The Bogeyman does not fall into a "neat and tidy category" like other scary creatures. Chapter two dishes out information that traces the Bogeyman through history from stories told in Greek mythology to present day tales. The third chapter stresses stories written about the Bogeyman such as Beowulf, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Stephen King's It. A fourth chapter entitled "Slicers and Dicers" tells about movies that "inspire fear and terror" in viewers. Some of these include Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. This book is from the "Monster Chronicle" series and is scarier than The Mummy and Creatures of the Deep from the same series. It is geared to fourth through seventh graders who will be able to handle the content. Author Krensky has put a great deal of research into the book. Drawings, paintings, and photographs in color and black and white enhance the content. In addition an index, websites, and books for further reading are included. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
