Bone Deep by Bonnie Dee

Love plumbs deep below the surface.

In 1946, Sarah, a grieving war widow goes to the carnival with friends and is riveted by the tattooed man in the freak show, adorned in head to toe body art. Later she discovers the man hiding in her hayloft, escaped from imprisonment by the evil owner. She shelters Tom on her farm, fighting a powerful attraction while learning about his mysterious past and gentle nature.

When a child goes missing, Tom uses his psychic gift to find her but his assistance doesn't relieve the locals' mistrust of such an exotic stranger. Small-town prejudice tears the lovers apart and a very real threat from the carnival owner endangers them. Can the lovers rise above obstacles of fear and hatred to create the family both have always craved?

I couldn't put this down. Well written and not your typical romance story.

Looking to read some a little different this is a good choice. The hero in this book is not the bad boy tattooed man but a truly beautiful and sweet man inside and out.

I originally bought this book because I loved Finding Home by Bonnie Dee (check it out, it's awesome!!). This book was good, but paled in comparison to Finding Home. It's a good book, because it's definitely change of pace from your typical romance novel. However, I just didn't feel the same character development and depth that was in some of her other books. Overall, not fantastic, but definitely a good read if you're looking for something a little different.

It's hard to express how much I loved this book. Tom's story was so touching and Sarah was just the person he needed to be with. I can't recommend it more...I couldn't put it down.

4.5 Stars!! I first read “Bone Deep” several months ago. I had never read any book by this author, but the premise of this intrigued me so much that I bought it. Since then, I have read 3 more of her books. Her stories are different, as the heroes are untraditional. In a sea of romance books that seem to be a regurgitation of the same story, Bonnie Dee sets herself apart. Sarah is a war widow in 1946. She goes with some friends to the circus when it hits town and upon entering the “freak show” is mesmerized by a man who is tattooed from head to toe. Their eyes meet and she feels an instant connection. Tom, the tattooed man, is trapped in his life at the circus, basically being held against his will. He escapes and hides in Sarah’s barn. When she discovers him there, she offers this quiet and intriguing man refuge. It turns out that Tom has special gifts and has visions of events that have yet to happen. He hides away in her house, and they grow close, finding a soulmate of sorts within each other. Then, when a girl goes missing in town, Tom uses his gifts to help find her, essentially outing his relationship with Sarah. Now, they must face small town judgment and prejudice in order to move forward. If I had to use one word to describe this book, I’d say it was riveting. As Tom’s story slowly unfolds, your compassion for him grows and grows. What he has been though is difficult, but it just serves to ground a character in a somewhat paranormal story. I really felt that the characters were realistic and grounded, and felt a connection to their stories. The writing is superb, and the flow of the plot is one of the strengths of this author. Nothing feels rushed, and the romantic tension is delicious. At the bottom of this entire story is a lesson about judging people by the way they look instead of what’s inside. Sarah has enough strength to look beyond what everyone else sees to really see the man Tom is inside. It’s a beautifully told and thoughtful story, as I have found all of Bonnie’s book to be. 4.5 stars for me! It’s one of my favorites and I’ve read it at least 3 times…do yourself a favor and pick this book up! Reviewed by Sara at Crystal's Many Reviewers *Received an ARC for honest review*

Different, but oh so good! I’m picky when it comes to historical romance. And if you’re looking for Dukes and Highland Lords, then this book is not for you. But maybe that’s why I like it so much, it wasn’t what I was expecting. In a good way. It was skillfully written and just pulled me in from the beginning. I loved how the protagonist, Sarah broke all the rules against society’s expectations of what a woman her age should be like.  She was strong and independent, a must for a heroine in a book as far as I’m concerned. And Tom was a damaged, abused man covered in tattoos with a special psychic gift.  While I love the typical alpha-males in romance, this was a nice surprise to fall in love with a hero that didn’t fit into the usual cookie-cutter type.  Why not 5 out of 5? I wanted to know more from Tom. We were never in his head, didn’t know his background. Didn’t even have a last name. And there were parts in the story that didn’t seem realistic to me. How did Sarah make a living on her own? Overall this was a great read and I highly recommend. I’ll definitely look for more Bonnie Dee books. The way she can write about the not-so-typical-beta-hero and make you fall in love with him was what made me a fan.

It would have been great to hear some of Tom's POV in a few chapters, just to read what he was thinking. Great book.

I wanted a romance story that was different, and this really delivered. It was touching, with a different kind of hero -- one that I truly felt loved the heroine without having to be an over-the-top alpha male. The sweet romance between the heroine and hero was very touching, and the struggles they have to go through (because the hero is "different," and because the story is set after World War II and in a rural area where you didn't let single men stay with you) felt challenging. The sex scenes were sweet and yet steamy.  All that being said, there wasn't much in the way of life-and-death conflict. I knew this story would have a happy ending; somehow the hero and heroine would find a way. I wasn't sure how they'd get there, but not once did I think, "Oh no, will they end up together? Will they be able to be happy?" The story isn't really about whether they will fall in love -- it's obvious from the very start they're meant to be together -- the story is about how they will find a compromise between their off-beat life together and the traditional life society expects them to have. The story's journey of the couple is finding a niche in society that will accept them and their love. If you're like me and you're sick of the "borderline jerks" alpha males, the cookie cutter heroines, and the stories that seem to blur together, I highly recommend BONE DEEP. It truly was an enjoyable read. In fact, I couldn't put it down and read it all in a day!
