Description: This is a wonderful, practical guide to using the history of presentation of bone tumors along with basic imaging findings to arrive at a specific or at least a very narrowed differential diagnosis. The first part of the book presents a review and method approach, while the latter part includes 75 case examples that allow readers to practice what they have learned and develop how to think when approaching the challenges of diagnosis for the initial presentation of bone tumors.
Purpose: The primary goal is to provide a practical way to analyze bone tumors and to highlight the most common tumors encountered in everyday practice. These are worthy goals and every practitioner will be able to make these diagnoses after reading this book.
Audience: The potential audience is all general orthopedic clinicians, but the audience that will get the biggest bang for the buck is residents in training and those who need to tune up for recertification exams. Every resident should have this book before in training and boards. It is an effective presentation of bone tumors for recertification, as well.
Features: This book is amazingly efficient, including images and tables that provide key reviews such as which tumors appear at which age or at certain places in the bone. After a general review, the book provides concise reviews of the most common tumors, making it appear far less daunting to make these diagnoses. Perhaps the most unique feature is the collection of 75 case examples with images, which allows readers to practice what they have learned in making the diagnosis. If I had one wish, it would be to make the images a bit larger; nonetheless their quality is still sufficient for making the diagnosis.
Assessment: I began the review of this book wondering if it could be any different than the classic texts in bone tumors we have all seen. I was happily surprised and impressed at how well the authors took a topic which at times can be overwhelming and broke it down, using a simple and efficient approach and review. All residents readying themselves for in training or boards and all attendings preparing for recertification will cherish this book as a valuable preparation tool before their big exams.
