Overview

Book of Virtues by William J. Bennett

Responsibility. Courage. Compassion. Honesty. Friendship. Persistence. Faith. Everyone recognizes these traits as essentials of good character. In order for our children to develop such traits, we have to offer them examples of good and bad, right and wrong. And the best places to find them are in great works of literature and exemplary stories from history.

William J. Bennett has collected hundreds of stories in The Book of Virtues, an instructive and inspiring anthology that will help children understand and develop character — and help adults teach them. From the Bible to American history, from Greek mythology to English poetry, from fairy tales to modern fiction, these stories are a rich mine of moral literacy, a reliable moral reference point that will help anchor our children and ourselves in our culture, our history, and our traditions — the sources of the ideals by which we wish to live our lives. Complete with instructive introductions and notes, The Book of Virtues is a book the whole family can read and enjoy — and learn from — together.

Outstanding! Every parent should own a copy of this book to read to their children. When a particular need arises you can read stories pertaining to that need. A book that can be read over and over again!

I'm only eleven my grandfather was hoping that I would read this so I got around to it and I love this book! I'm doing a book review on it for my class its hard because this book has no main characters... but this is an amazing book I recommend it to any one who has some time to indulge in well what might be the best book you probably will ever read!!!

These days, children are loud, rude, vulgar, mean, stubborn, and just plain bad. I know for a fact: I am a twelve year old girl in public school. Two of my classmates got into legal trouble involving boys, no clothes, and picture taking. Now, I am being brought up the old fashioned way: honor your father and mother, the meek shall inherit the earth, be humble, do not covet, basically following the Ten Commandments the Lord my God has given us. Now, most of you are not religious, but that is no reason not to follow the Virtues described in this book. At school, I get the best grades both academically and behaviorwise, all because my ,other taught me of Self Discipline, Compassion, Responsibility, Friendship, Work, Courage, Perserverance, Honesty, Loyalty, and Faith. On each report card I have recieved since 2008-2009 (my kindergarten year) my teachers have said,"[I am] a delight to have in class!" Do you want to create a beautiful world with no evil? Do you want to teach these children to be sweet and kind to one another? Whether you be a grandmother or dad, use this Book of Virtues to construct children on the Path of Righteousness! -Authoress, Future Book Writer

There are stories in this collection which can bring you back many years to young childhood, teenager, and just starting out in life. It's an excellent moral compass. I have given a number of the books as gifts and have noticed its presence in a number of teachers rooms. A very good tool indeed! You won't be sorry.

This is a must have for raising children or grandchildren. Helps to reinforce the virtues/values that aren't taught to most children today. The book uses classic poetry, short stories, and more. Would make nice baby shower gift! I have enjoyed reading some of the short stories and enjoy stories I heard as a child. A great book !
