This book sits next to Jim Trelease's book, "The Read Aloud handbook" and its a toss up which one I go to more. This book is written for librarians but is PERFECT for parents and home educators as well. It is worth every penny and is packed with information and ideas. Its a must have in my opinion!

Where does Judy Freeman find the time to compile her best book yet? There are so many titles with great extensions (germs). The possibilities are endless! This is a must buy for librarians, teachers and student teachers. This is a 915 page book filled with everything and anything you need to know about books. What a gem!

I'm just starting my career as a school librarian and this book is my bible. Concise, well written summaries of all the best books for K-5. The index is very useful as it lists by author, title and subject. I attended one of Judy's Winners' seminars and my only wish is that they were held more than once a year. As a parent, this is also a very useful book because she picks the top new books of each year. Her choices are all very creative, well-written books and she includes ideas for how to use these books in the library or classroom.

Third time is the charm for Freeman. This book is much more than just a revised and updated version. Judy has put all the book suggestions and 'germs' like always, but she has included enough other librarian and book info to keep you going through many school years to come. How to share great books, extension activities, library management tips, favorites over the years, and Judy's insights about books are too numerous to mention. As a school librarian for more than 500 PreK-6th grade students I know I'll have plenty of ideas for great book sharing and fun all year. I see 8 classes of pre-reading, 3-5 year olds each week and I know Judy's insight will help me build a strong literacy foundation with them. I bought the hardback because the book is so big and I didn't want to worry about the binding giving into that weight. You need this book.

After attending 2 of Judy's Winners Workshops, this book is the next best thing. She provides wonderful activities and extensions of lessons that engage children and encourage reading! Each of her recommendations have had a great response from my 5th grade class. I highly recommend this book to educators in urban districts. Great work Judy!

If your budget only allows one professional book this year - I urge you to pick up this book! The author, Judy Freeman, beings with Seventeen Things You Need to Know to Be a Great Librarian - This is a must read before school starts! This will be a wonderful resource to use with teachers as you collaborate on units - The Indexes are one of the best tools to use in selecting the perfect book to go along with units!

This is an excellent reference book with many hands-on suggestions for reading to children - very thorough, complete, and easy to use. The tone is both entertaining and instructive. The individualized suggestions on how to make the reading of each book special are creative and fun to do. Judy Freeman's expertise and experience would be helpful to all who want to engage children in the magic of reading and books - librarians, teachers and parents.

This is the third of Judy Freeman's books that I have used in my staff development courses for K-5 teachers. A feature that I find especially useful is the up-to-date listing of subject-specific non-fiction. Teachers are always looking for literature that can be used to enrich their science and social studies lessons and Books Will Sit Still for 3 is just the ticket.

This book is a tremendous resource for me in my work with kids with learning differences. By using its amazingly thorough subject index I can tailor book selections to the age, reading level, and interests of each child. The annotations allow me to preview the books and locate related titles. The sheer volume of useful, well-organized information in this volume is staggering! Any teacher or librarian of grades K-6 would find a treasure trove in this book.

From the opening gems of 'One Librarian to Another' and 'Seventeen Things You Need to Know to Be a Great School Librarian,' author and children's book consultant extraordinaire Judy Freeman creates another invaluable guide for teachers, librarians, parents, and lovers of children's books. If you have already savored Books Kids Will Sit Still For and More Books Kids Will Sit Still For, you will cherish Judy's latest even 'bigger' and 'better' Read-Aloud Guide. It is replete with advice for reading aloud, reading alone, storytelling, reader's theater, and creative drama. Unlike many read-aloud guides, this one is based on Judy Freeman's first-hand experience as a premier teacher, book reviewer, dynamic speaker, and captivating singer, storyteller, and performer. Freeman's booklists for easy fiction/picture fiction folk & fairy tales, myths & legends poetry, nonsense, and language-oriented nonfiction biography and nonfiction are unique in their perceptive, incisive summaries. The germs are classroom-tested and will unleash your own creative ideas for uses with the books with classes or your own children. Using the related titles, one of my favorite sections, will trigger your memory of previously published books, evoking the joy and discovery that can be shared with the new title. This 915-page treasure will be the read-aloud guide you consult most frequently. It is truly worth its weight in gold!
