Emily cracked her knuckles. "Gathering of freaks, huh?" She smirked again, very unpleasantly. Her friends giggled. "Compound E5 isn't for tiny weaklings like you-" she prodded Ivy in the chest, "Or loners like you-" it was Dune she poked, "Or everyone here. Get out or we'll make you."
That seemed to be the rehearsed time that her thuggish followers started to crack their knuckles.
Zanifea sneered. "I'm not leaving for a 'Crack like you."
"Go home to your troll-hole, ogre!" Asi growled.
But it was Zack who really proved a point. Picking up his basketball, he hurled it with bullet-speed into her face.
Her scream was high and unearthly.
"Slam dunk," Zack said coolly. Emily's nose was bleeding. Her expression was one of pure hatred as he spat at her feet.
"I-l'll get you! I'll get you for this! Just you wait!"
"I'm sure l will have to wait a very long time," Zack said, "and l'll have my ball back."
He snatched the ball and put it under his arm, walking away and beckoning the rest of the group. Asi was looking up at him with admiration, and her hand found his as they walked down the hill.
"We'll have to find another place to meet," Asi said, taking over, "And it's your assignment to find us something suitable- and secret. From now on we will be known as the ETC!!!!!"
"The ET what?" Ois asked, confused.
"The Emotional Type Club! We'll meet when we can to find and practice our powers and hang out. We'll also need a Mental Type-" she looked at Zanifea- "who can help us."
Zanifea smiled. "I'd be honored," she said quietly.
"The ETC is officially dismissed!" Asi shouted.
The small crowd of students walked away, each at their own pace. Zanifea grabbed the the hand of a caramel-haired girl with freckles and they ran down the hill, whooping and laughing. Ivy ambled down by herself, nimble as a mountain goat. Dune ruffled his hair and stuck his hands in his pockets, turning to look at Ois one last time before wandering away. Her head spun with happiness at his gaze.
"You were so braaaave!" Asi beamed at Zack. He said nothing, but a pinkness crept into his face and he smiled a little.
Asi and Zack held hands all through lunch, and they only separated when they had different classes to go to.
"Looks like someone has a boyfriend now," Ois teased as they walked down the hall toward Biology.
"And it also looks like someone has a crush on someone three years older than her. Shuddup, Ois," Asi grinned, but blushed profusely.
The rest of the day was spent poring over microscopes and reading diagrams, writing and drawing, and scribbling equations on paper, while looking dreamily outside at the warm weather. The sun pooled onto the desks and the sweet wind, with its scent of flowers and nature, intoxicated every student in the various classrooms. Ois watched the beams of sunlight and daydreamed about Dune; his tawny body, his windswept hair. He was the reason she did all her algebra wrong, he was the reason she trisected the Ghilseptis worm instead of dissected; she was a romantic mess all through Literature and English. Finally she bolted from the classroom, the first when the bell rang. Boarding the bus, she stared out the window, wondering if he liked her as much as she liked him. It didn't help when Asi and Zack tried to encourage her to talk about plans for the ETC. She left when her bus stop came and walked home.
