Description: This book not only provides an in-depth review of historical figures and literature surrounding the field of ethics, but also acts a study guide, walking athletic training students through the study of ethics and how it relates to the profession.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist young professionals in ethical decision making by providing an extensive education on how to frame their ideas. The book not only provides a complete review of the literature regarding models for ethical decision making, but it also offers a section on how to learn/teach the process of ethical decision making. This book is unique in that it recognizes that by solely providing information about ethical theories in context alone students may not be able to learn how to apply what they have studied to everyday scenarios in athletic training sessions until placed in such situations.
Audience: Athletic training professionals and those who are entering the athletic training profession are the intended audience. The authors are athletic training clinicians and have the expertise to talk about ethical decision making in this facet. Although many different healthcare professionals would benefit from the information discussed in this book, the scenarios are specific to athletic training.
Features: The book begins by providing the rationale for why ethics training is important to the profession and what knowledge athletic trainers must possess to be on a level playing field with other healthcare professions. The book also provides assessment tools to help students and teachers apply the information provided here and in classes to mock real life situations.
Assessment: I am not aware of a book that tackles the issue of ethics in such a robust manner. This book is written in a way to guide students through a course that will assist them in shaping their own ethical principles based on personal core beliefs, not by defining what their beliefs should be.
