Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite Born on January 29, 1960, Gia Marie Carangi was a popular American fashion model during the late 1970s and early 1980s. I’ve come to know about her through the dramatized 1998 film Gia, in which Angelina Jolie portrayed her. I was intrigued and looked for info on the real Gia Carangi, where I stumbled upon a couple of documentaries and several articles about this young, enigmatic supermodel. Her powerful allure that was different from other cookie cutter models made her a favorite among top fashion photographers and magazines. Today’s younger generation fashion lovers may not know about Gia, but her story is, until this day, the most profound one in modelling fame. Gia’s rapid rise in her modelling career declined just as fast when she became addicted to heroin and eventually died of AIDS-related complications at the age of 26. Born This Way by Sacha Lanvin Baumann is narrated through the interviews of friends and colleagues who recall their time spent with Gia and their personal thoughts about her. Born This Way successfully sheds light on Gia’s character that people may not be aware of. Some of the interviewees have opposite opinions about Gia, but there’s no doubt her magnetism affected everyone at certain levels. She could have continued with modelling a little longer, pursued photography, filmography or tried her hand at acting. Or she could have quit, leaving New York, going home to Philadelphia or whatnot. In the end, her life ended too soon. This is a poignant but fascinating and insightful work from Baumann about Gia.

This leads us to catch not only a glimpse but a reflective view of a supermodel’s life. The author presented Gia as a victim of a glamorous culture, eventually finding herself trapped in a destructive life. However there are many lessons to be learned and also a way to be inspired especially for those who are dreaming of a career in fashion modeling. I see the strength of a woman even at a young age. Reading this also serves as a time capsule in the modeling profession. It reveals how it was to be a model back in the late 70s to 80s as compared to the lifestyle trends of models these days.

Secret Life of a Supermodel Revealed Looking at a supermodel, we can say that it’s not all glam and sparkle, but it remains a life to be envied. It is that envy that made me even more curious to read this biography. I am glad I did. The life of a fashion icon and all the secrets were revealed in a professional way. It not only lays down the details and facts, it also gives the reader an insider’s view of the fashion world’s lights and shadows through the experiences of Gia and the personalities around her.

It started with one of the best stubborn quote that summarises it: "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun" This novel reveals so many unheard stories and memories of Gia. There is a lot yet to be heard of this larger-than-life person. This novel reveals many of these precious memories looking through the eyes of a co-worker, overlooking the glitz and glamour. For myself, I've never heard much of this personality up until some few months ago when I was writing a research on the industry. Her name was literary written down boldly in history, she consciously made sure of it down to the details. Gia is an uncommon character with such a story trailing her with many beautiful pictures to illustrate it in history before she bowed out. Despite the success and glory, fame and fortune, we all still are humans in the midst of it. What determines how your life turn out is your choices and action you do on an interpretation of it all. and there's no way of everyone else knowing except through the eyes of people that see the real you no matter how you try to hide. This is one of those accounts of an icon in history with the incredible memories and invaluable lessons.
