I generally enjoy these guides for the various cities I've visited. They are small (about 5 x 7 inches) and thin (definitely less than half an inch). The foldout maps are helpful for the various neighborhoods you visit and easy to read. The maps overlap so that you can easily connect neighborhoods visually. They are also discreet in case you don't want to mark yourself as a tourist with a giant roadmap. One hang-up about the Boston map is that it does not include Jamaica Plain. It also lacks some of the historical information that I wanted when I visited. It seems to focus on the trendy parts of town.
I am partial to Knopf Mapguides and I love the Washington D. C. version so I will try to go easy on this review. However, the Boston Mapguide was not a user friendly book. It also did not explain enough history about the different areas of Boston. The guide seemed more of an advertisement to the small but unimportant venues instead of a guide throough the historic Boston. I ended up at the tourist information center at Boston Common. I received a tourist map which was much more useful. This will not stop me from using Knopf Mapguides in the future but it has surely knocked Knopf from the top tier of tourist information for me.
