Politics and power. Demons and spirits.

When ex-Pinkerton detective Samuel Hunter married Elizabeth Weldsmore, the heir to one of Boston's Great Houses, he knew his life would change forever, but he never expected the return of Elizabeth's psychic abilities.

Not only do they have to keep it a secret, but Elizabeth must learn quickly how to master them. For a psychic in a Great House is a political liability which her father, Jonathan Weldsmore, knows only too well.

As the Great Houses jockey for power, the three of them must contend with treachery, subterfuge, and potentially a new demonic threat, in this political and supernatural thriller set in an alternate-history Boston of 1890.

This novel is a prequel to the original graphic novel series, Boston Metaphysical Society.

Steampunk lovers, mystery mavens, paranormal fans, THE BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY is here! Madeleine Holly-Rosing has done a remarkable job of creating that special atmosphere that only steampunk can provide while twisting each page into a tension-filled mystery that borders on both sides of “the veil.” Enter the world of nineteenth century Boston, where “Great Houses” control the political climate, commerce and the inventions of the times with iron fists and a keen sense of competition to be the top dog. Meet Elizabeth, a newly wed, strong willed, yet impulsive woman of the times who also has the gift of sight that just may get her into more trouble than anyone could have imagined. Something evil is lurking in Boston and death is on the menu…can Elizabeth uncover a horrific and diabolical plot? Told mostly through the dialogue of each character, one feels they are part of the era’s drawing room conversations, like a fly on the wall. The action is subtle, not overbearing, yet conveys great movement in story. A wonderfully entertaining escape from reality that provides great characters, mystery and a journey into the unknown. Madeleine Holly-Rosing has done a remarkable job of creating tension and anticipation on every page!

Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite Boston Metaphysical Society: A Storm of Secrets is a work of steampunk fiction by author Madeleine Holly-Rosing, and is the prequel to the graphic novel collection, Boston Metaphysical Society: The Complete Series. Set in an alternate American history, as many steampunk tales are, Holly-Rosing takes us on a thrilling adventure as heroine Elizabeth Hunter investigates the disappearance of many people in the city of Boston. Whilst her husband, former Pinkerton detective Samuel, has traditional methods of discovering his clues, Elizabeth possesses the rare paranormal gift of mediumship. More than this, Elizabeth belongs to the Weldsmore family, one of the Great Houses of Boston, and if her paranormal gifts are discovered, a far graver fate may await her than those she is investigating. I thoroughly enjoyed Madeleine Holly-Rosing’s alternative to Boston in 1890, where steampunk society, politics and the paranormal all collide in a dark and devastating Gaslamp adventure. Fans of the genre are sure to step straight into the Victorian style of it all, the descriptions being highly atmospheric and stylish. The dialogue was delightfully witty, sharp and direct, giving an accomplished sense of character so strong that Elizabeth, Samuel and Jonathan really leaped off the page. Alongside the actual mystery of the plot, the overarching story line of the Great Houses was an observant, intelligent addition. Overall, Boston Metaphysical Society: A Storm of Secrets is a superb read that fans of the steampunk genre are certain to love. And if you’re new to the genre in general, this would be a high quality example with which to begin your steampunk journey.
