Robert J. Allison is chairman of the history department of Suffolk Universityin Boston and teaches courses in American Constitutional history and the history of Boston at Harvard Extension School. He lives in South Boston and summers in Provincetown on Cape Cod.

For a year and a half in the early 1960s, a serial killer held eastern Massachusetts under siege. During that short period, the so-called Boston Strangler sexually assaulted and murdered 13 women ranging in age from 19 to 85. When local lowlife Albert DeSalvo confessed to the crimes in 1965, Bostonians loosed pent-up feelings.
