Bound by Honor (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles Series #1)

by Cora Reilly

Born into one of the leading Mob families in Chicago, Aria Scuderi struggles to find her own path in a world where no choices are given. Aria was only fifteen when her parents betrothed her to Luca - The Vice - Vitiello, the oldest son of the head of the New York Cosa Nostra to ensure peace between the two families.
Now at eighteen, the day Aria has been dreading for years is looming dangerously: her wedding to Luca.
Aria is terrified of marrying a man she hardly knows, especially someone like Luca who got his nickname 'the Vice' for crushing a man's throat with his bare hands. Luca might be one of the most sought after men in New York thanks to his good looks, wealth and predator-like charisma that radiates power, but the society girls throwing themselves at him don't know what Aria does: that the bad boy aura isn't just a game; blood and death lurk beneath Luca's striking gray eyes and arrogant smile.
In her world a handsome exterior often hides the monster within; a monster who can just as easily kill as kiss you.
The only way to escape the marriage to Luca would be to run away and leave everything she's ever known behind but Aria can't bear the thought of never seeing her family again.
Despite her fear, she decides to go through with the marriage; Aria has grown up among predators like Luca and knows that even most cold-hearted bastards have a heart and she has every intention of working her way into Luca's.

This book is meh. I’ve already read the first half so far, and I can honestly say I still feel nothing for the main characters. Aria has the personality of a whiny wet napkin, and Luca seems like an exaggerated mobster from a Lifetime movie. There is no depth to any of the characters, and the whole story seems very forced and fabricated. The author really didn’t try to make either of the main characters very likeable, and there isn’t much driving the story forward. The writing is awkward too - the phrasing feels like a translation from a different language. Very straightforward, with surface descriptions and then every once in a while there is some clunky use of metaphors that detract from the story. Grammar is an issue here too, making the story read like a first draft. All in all, I am going to finish this book because I’m stubborn, but I don’t think I could stomach anything else by this author.

This is my first read by this author and my last. The immaturity of both characters did nothing to make me like them. I expect stupid choices from a teenager but this over the top. The outside characters were even less attractive and by the third chapter I was ready for the book to end. The grammar was weird. Not like spell check corrections but like English isn't my first language stuff. The time gaps weren't explained and jump to boring moments I could do without. The whole wedding night thing was so over the top dramatic with no flare, I seriously wished they just had sex. Add in the adultery and over night forgiveness and I really hate this book. It's was like Twilight gone mafia.

If you love mafia books as much as I do, then you will not be disappointed by Bound by Honor. The characters were enjoyable, the writing was never dull, and the ending didn't leave me hanging. There was love, hate, violence, action, romance, steamy chemistry, etc. Bound by Honor is definitely a book that I will re-read time and time again. I know that I will get the same feelings as I did when I first read it.

Bound by Honor is the story of Luca Vitiello and Aria Scuderi, who are arranged to marry as a gesture of truce between two rival mafia families. Luca is the heir of New York Famiglia, whose notorious reputation has earned him the nickname "Vice". Aria on the other hand is the beautiful and demure daughter of a prominent member of Chicago Outfit. Neither of them have experienced or witnessed loving marriages and childhoods, which makes their journey complicated. Their growth, both as individuals and with each other, while bounded by the strict rules of their secretive society as well as tragic upbringings is mesmerizingly written. The rocky road of their relationship blossoms into an unforgettable love story that I'm grateful to have read, especially as someone who loves Alpha males that find light in the darkness along with the heroine. This is the book that made me fall in love with the unique, soul captivating Cora Reilly's mafia world since 2015, and I have been obsessed ever since.

I discovered this book purely by accident and man am I glad! It led me to probably the best book series ever. I've always loved the mafia romance genre and this series is PERFECT! I loved Luca and Aria's story so much, the way Cora developed their story, starting from pure fear on Aria's side to where they arrived presently ( I dont want to post any spoilers for anyone only just discovering these books) Luca was pure male dominance and HOTNESS! I loved this book, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great romance read.

LUCA! Oh, what can I say about my favorite ruthless man? I first discovered this book about a year after it was released (yes I know I’m sorry I was late). Although I cannot say that this book was the start of my “tiny” obsession with mafia romance I can say that it definitely was a book that made me add mafia romance onto my giant list of things I’m obsessed with. This book is, in my opinion, the definition of mafia romance and is by far my favorite book of this series. Luca, a cold-hearted man, and Aria caring, compassionate young women are arranged to be married after Aria turns eighteen. In the mafia world, specifically La Costa Nostra, there is a tradition of presenting the sheets after the bride and groom’s wedding night. This is the night that Aria is dreading. Fortunately for her, our cold-hearted man isn’t as cold-hearted as we thought. As I was reading the book and diving deeper into this wonderful/mysterious world that Cora Reilly so beautifully wrote about, I found myself not being able to put my phone down to take a breather from reading. I literally finished this book in less than a day. Reilly’s imagining of this world has you hooked from the first word of the first page. It has wanted and needed more to the point you turn into Smeagle yelling “my precious” making your family think something is seriously wrong with you. I completely recommend this book to anyone who wants to start reading mafia romance books although some parts will completely make you mad I promise things will be okay in the end. P.s Luca is mine and I don’t feel like sharing lol.

Bound by Honor was a thrilling suspense romantic in the world of mafia. When Aria is set for an arranged in a world of very little choices for women, it's the worst. Anticipating the worst from her fiance, Luca, Aria is thrown into a world of unexpected love, chaos, so much more than she predicted from her new husband. This book is filled with love, danger, and irresistible passion. Plus the writing was amazing.

This book is great. It is absolutely one of my favorites and I always re-read this book. The book has traditional concepts and doesn't sway from typical "mafia" books like others I have read. Told from Aria's (the bride) point of view, Aria is arranged a marriage with the future capo of New York. In a typical sense, Luca (the groom) is a playboy. All in all, this was a great read and i highly recommend it to those who enjoy mafia based books.

Absolutely loved it!! I only started it, because i knew its about the mafia and i love mob related books, but the second i started it, I found my new favourite. I become kind of obsessed with Luca to be honest, and now its basically impossible to find a better bad boy hero. The story was very well written, although I could have read a thousand more pages. My only problem was Aria's character, whom I found extremely annoying. Of course, it must be difficult to get married to someone, when you barely ever talked to a man before, but still... I hate those heroines, who always feel sorry for themselfs and start crying all the time, and Aria was tipically this person. Despite the negative I've re-read it about five times and it still doesn't get boring.

Absolutely loved it! I was a bit afraid to start the book, because I've never been a fan of romantic books, but it ended up being my favourite story. I've always been interested in the mafia world and this book was the perfect mix of the mafia and romance. I really love Cora Reilly's writing style. The only negative thing for me was Aria's personality. For me she was way too shy and naive, but of course you can't really expect anything else, since she was sheltered in her entire life. Luca has become my new favourite bad boy and I can't wait to read the upcoming books as well.

The story is incredible. This was my first mafia book I read and I liked it very much. Aria and Luca are amazing! They are like white and black, good and evil. I sympathized with Aria from the beginning of the book, I love her .. she is so good, courageous, sacrificial. I love her love for Luca, because it is not easy to love. Luca Vitiello - God this man is unique ... at first I did not like his attitude to Aria but later I fell in love with him even his infidelity does not irritate me because he is expected by a man like the onion. The end of the book was extremely emotional, I love every part of Luca's confession! I like the style of writing Cora and I still like how real it is recreated the first time of Aria. I'm voting with 5 stars for my beloved couple.

This was the first mafia romance I had ever read, and it was an absolute delight. It is a great start to this series.

This is the first Cora Reilly book I ever read. Luca & Aria’s story is one of my fave’s as it sets the tone for all the remaining born in blood series. The chemistry between Luca and Aria is hot. I love how dominant and alpha Luca Is and Aria is simply his Queen who knows when to listen or challenge him. They fit perfectly together. If you are looking for a mafia series I highly recommend this one. I’ve reread this aeries multiple times and the characters and storyline stick with you.

If you have read a mafia book or have never read one, read this now. You will fall in love with these characters and this world and never want to leave! In the beginning, neither Aria or Luca is all that excited about this union but for different reasons. At first, there is a bit of a love hate relationship, but when they fall boy do they fall hard. Luca is very much an alpha male but he bends for Aria. Aria is terrified of Luca when she first meets him but quickly realizes there is much more beneath the surface. These two together make for the sweetest love. However, don't let that fool you, the story is still packed with mafia goodness!

This book didn't wow me but I was looking for a steamy romance and that's what I got. There were so many little details that could have been changed in order for me to have liked this novel more than I did. For example, I didn't like that it was set in modern times. If it had taken place in the heyday of the Italian mafia, say early to mid twentieth century, I could have believed the whole arranged marriage and joining the mob families together plot but in modern times it just seems too unreal to me. I also didn't like that Aria is essentially suffering from Stockholm syndrome. She goes into this marriage being scared of Luca, as she should because she doesn't even know the guy, yet in a matter of a couple months, maybe even weeks because the time period wasn't very clear, she's in love with the him despite the fact that they've barely spent any time together apart from a few sex scenes. That kind of love in an arranged marriage doesn't happen over the course of a few weeks, it can take years to establish. It was like a modern day telling of beauty and the beast but the story just doesn't fit in modern times when the acknowledgment of female individuality is at its peak. I was half hoping that she would fall in love with her bodyguard, Romero, and they would run off together. That would have been a much more interesting story in my opinion. I want to read the next two books just because I want to see how they compare to this one. Are any of them going to be about actual love built out of friendship and mutual respect or they too going to be case studies on Stockholm syndrome? I'm sure the last one about Matteo and Gianna will be considering the fact that Gianna hates Matteo but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Valentina and Dante.

Really good read. I didn't want to put it down. I appreciate that the author makes the mafia side of the story come to life, without it being too much of the focus. Would really like to hear Luca's side of the story

Good enough to make you cancel your date with that other book. Some interesting word and grammar choices at times but it is worth reading. Some of it could have gone into more detail, but it was good for the first book in the series.
