I really enjoyed the historical aspect of this novel. It was refreshing to see a thriller with a different angle to it. I have read Saul in the past and have always enjoyed his work, this novel was no different.

I finished this book in less than one day. It sure was gripping, and tore at a few heart strings.

Set in the heart of Silicon Valley at the beginning of the computer revolution, BRAINCHILD involves a couple desparate to save the life of their only child, who is severely brain damaged in an automobile accident. They enlist the help of a renowned neurosurgeon. At first, Alex Lonsdale is viewed as a living miracle, Dr. Ramon Torres praised for his work. But later on, his friends and family notice his lack of emotion and feeling and see a coldness about the new Alex. Traditional Anglo/Mexican prejudices play a role in the horrific events of this story. BRAINCHILD also raises ethical issues on when to give up lifesaving measures and being 'saved' in a physical sense vs quality of life. A reccommended read for anyone interested in medical ethics and the possibilities of ever advancing scientific/medical technology.
