Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless You by Lynn Cowell

What will my life be like? Who will I be? Whether girls put these concerns into words or struggle anxiously with these thoughts, during this season of change, girls have questions. Sometimes these questions also come with fears and they need a safe place to process these fears. From Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker and blogger, Lynn Cowell, comes Faithgirlz Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless You. For girls 8-12, Brave Beauty brings tweens 100 courage-building moments to reflect on Scripture and find confidence in God, rather than in someone, some place, or some thing, as culture will all-too-soon tell them to. Lynn will also prepare girls to:

  • Overcome confidence-defeating thoughts and stand on who Jesus says she is.
  • Shape her self-worth on Christ and overcome the temptation base it on environmental factors.
  • Build a strong foundation to face the fickle and flippant opinions of others.
  • Find approval of herself even when she lacks the acceptance of others.
  • Find security by turning to Christ as she steps through the exciting, yet scary world of growing up

Formatted as theme-based mini chapters, these moments can be read as one-a-days, one-a-weeks, or at the reader’s own pace. Simple and empowering, Lynn’s voice is relatable and conversational, making it easy for girls to feel like they’re spending time with a friend. This inspirational read will be set as a gorgeously foil decorated hardcover, with beautifully formatted pages in line with the well-known and loved Faithgirlz look, and with an easy-reference index to look up any topic.

About the Author

Lynn Cowell is a part of the Proverbs 31 Ministries speaking team, speaking to pre-teens, teens, multi-generational and women’s conferences and retreats on a regular basis. Girls often come up to her saying, "How did you know that's what I was going through?" Hearing direction and guidance on critical issues they face, Lynn encourages them to reach their fullest potential by finding the relationship in Christ they were created them for. For the past 18 years, her ministry has helped thousands of girls and their moms:

  • Replace loneliness, rejection, and pain with acceptance, affirmation, and approval.
  • Make decisions that lead women to reaching their fullest potential, rather than being a victim to emotionally-based decisions.
  • Shift faith in Jesus from a parental influence to a personal, growing relationship.
  • Develop and stick to boundaries that protect the heart, mind, and body.
  • Communicate with guys and other girlfriends in a healthy and positive way.

In addition to speaking on the national level, Lynn reaches many through her writing as an author of three books, blogger, and devotion writer. As a regular contributor for the Proverbs 31 Ministries’ daily devotions, Encouragement for Today, her devotions reach an audience of over 800,000 subscribers. She has been a regular contributor for The Whatever Girls and The Mom Initiative. Lynn and her husband, Greg, of 30 years, are the parents of three young adults: Zak, Mariah, and Madi. The Cowells reside in North Carolina where they enjoy hiking in the mountains, wearing well-worn sweatshirts and eating anything that combines chocolate and peanut butter.

Written like a devotional journal, this book is full of 100 prompts for young girls. The mini-chapters are no more than a few pages and include journal prompts, short quizzes, and guided prayers. This book has strong Christian undertones as it has many "dear Jesus" prayers. Many of the anecdotal stories seem to come from middle school or relate to pre-teens. While readers of any age can enjoy this book, it is geared towards females as opposed to males. Sections of the book have to do with beauty, confidence, being loved, and being confident. This book is empowering for young girls. They will learn from the Bible and even from the author's own life. Stories unfold to show how one can be brave and beautiful.

I received a copy of BRAVE BEAUTY: FINDING THE FEARLESS YOU by Lynn Cowell from ZonderKidz in exchange for an honest review. It is from Faithgirlz. This book is perfect for tween girls, as well as some teen girls. I can see myself swallowing this up when I was around 11 or 12, and just coming to terms with life. I was starting to understand there was more to life than friends and school. This book dives into deeper messages and sparks conversations to be had with an adult, with friends, or with a religious mentor. BRAVE BEAUTY consists of many short chapters. The length is perfect for a girl to read one a day. They aren’t long or daunting, and are perfect for even reluctant or struggling readers. (The only thing is that the book itself is long, so it might be off-putting for some girls until they realize they can easily get through the chapters.) This makes a great gift, especially with the holidays coming up.

For all the young girls who wish to be brave and feel they don't have what it takes, Brave Beauty, is a hardcover book of 100 mini chapters to highlight just how brave you really are. Lynn Cowell takes her young reader on a biblical journey highlighting everyday situations where a girl can muster her bravery. Appropriately subtitled, Finding the Fearless You, Cowell presents her readers with mini quizzes where girls answer short questions about themselves, mini journaling opportunities to work out getting to know themselves, and mini "Courageous Call" sections to pray out loud. My favorite chapter was Chapter 30, "Gorgeous Jar." Cowell writes about her daughter's flowers and pots. Her daughter doesn't keep up with the cleaning the pots or wanting newer ones. Cowell points out that the pot is not what is important. The contents of the pot are what matters. This chapter reminded me of a beautiful Chinese folktale called The Cracked Pot. God always sees us for who we are on the inside and not what we can show of ourselves on the outside. We hold living water inside of us because of who He is. Brave Beauty is a wonderful book to read with your daughters, granddaughters, or gift to a young girl needing to see the brave in herself. I recommend this book to any young girl between the ages of 8 and 14 who want to draw nearer to Christ and find the bravery they so long to see within themselves. Because of how short the chapters are, they lend well to short attention spans while packing them full of wise, timely stories. You will even encounter biblical stories like that of Nicodemus to parallel the mini chapters. This is a great gift for a birthday, Christmas, middle school graduation or a young girl coming into her bravery!

SEP 17 Finding the Fearless You-Brave Beauty What a great devotional/journal for girls between the ages of 10-13.. Lynn Cowell has written one hundred mini chapters discussing the many things all girls struggle through in three main sections: I am loved, I am brave, I am confident. The sections small enough to do in a short period of time and have a place also for a journal entry. Journaling is a good habit that could be started and honed as the young lady matures. The scripture is there to point the girl to the truth of God's word. In our culture today so many things are giving false messages. This will help to declare the truth and become empowered to take action and become that Brave Beauty. I see the benefit of mom and daughter reading the mini chapters and discussing them. Mom, you could share some of your personal growing up challenges. I also would recommend it as a gift to a special niece, cousin or any other young girl. Again, your personal story would help her in the journey.

This lovely little devotional for girls has a ton of appeal. Not does it have that awesome Faithgirlz cover, it also has some pretty awesome devotionals to encourage young girls to find their confidence and identity in Christ. It's interactive, has questions, stories, prayers, and much more. It's about learning to be themselves, but also learning to be like Christ, changing if needed. It's about being courageous, overcoming, and standing up! The stories were good, and thought provoking. They will draw in the girls and get their attention. They include Scriptures, but there is no Scripture reading suggestion included. That was probably the only thing that I would have liked to see included. I feel like a really good devotional should include some Scripture reading. But this is still a great book, and I am excited to be able to pass it on to my daughter. I received this book from Handlebar and Thomas Nelson to read. I was not asked to review positively. All opinions are my own.

BRAVE BEAUTY is a devotional for tween girls. It has a brief story that tweens can relate to, an application where they answer a short quiz or write thoughts or do something that relates to the devotion and concludes with a brief prayer. My daughters both really enjoyed reading this devotional, discussing it, and discovering the ways they feel the same and where they differ in how they handle things. We also had fun discussing some of the devotions. A great devotional book for tween girls to do alone, with a sister or a friend, or with a mom, grandma, or aunt. I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

There are many things that I love about this book, but one of the highlights is the breadth of topics that Lynn writes about. Tweens deal with so much in such a small amount of time and they need to have a resource that helps them deal with a multitude of things...and show them that with God, they can navigate through them all. I am so excited that my tween has this book and I look forward the conversations we can have from it! (I was given an advanced reader's copy of this book for my own, honest opinion. I was not compensated in any way for this review.)

My Review of Brave Beauty Sweet Encouragement for 'Tween Girls Brave Beauty is so beautifully written. It's a wonderful devotional for 8-12 year old girls, but is written in a conversational style. Brave Beauty helps girls connect with God through journaling spaces, prayers and practical application. It's written to be a devotional companion and personal book for each girl, so they can have a record of their faith journey. Brave Beauty is a book that girls will turn to again and again. Girls will enjoy devotional entries that encourage them to know God-who He is and how He can help them. They will also learn to depend on God, trusting Him to guide them. Girls will learn about what God says about them in His Word, and that whatever they are going through, matters to God. Looking at people throughout the Bible, girls will see how they faced difficult situations, and God took care of them. I truly enjoyed Brave Beauty myself. I appreciate Lynn Cowell's friendly style, as a conversation between friends. The truths and life principles contained in Brave Beauty are relevant to any age. Girls (and older girls, too!) will find that courage, confidence, and beauty are rooted in God. As girls know God more, they will understand how deeply He loves and cares about them; and because He does, they are brave, courageous, confident, and beautiful. I very highly recommend Brave Beauty. I know the girls in my life will be blessed by it. I am ordering a copy for myself, too. *Disclaimer: I am blessed to have been able to read and review Brave Beauty. I received an Advanced Reader's Copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. The opinion stated is my own. I have not been compensated in any way.*

Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless You by Lynn Cowell has been a blessing to my tween daughter. She and I have been enjoying going through this devotional together. The book itself is beautiful and the chapters are short enough for our busy girls to read at least one a day and find encouragement and Biblical truth to help guide them through this ever changing season in their lives. The tween years are not easy, but Lynn shares personal stories, questions to get the girls thinking, quizzes to allow the girls to discover themselves and who they are in Christ and so much more. My daughter loves the courageous calls at the end of each chapter. This devotional touches upon so many different areas our girls will encounter and question as their body changes and peers challenge them. She covers areas on worth, acceptance, the changing body, purpose, being true to who you are, truth, courage, confidence and so much more. All areas our girls need to hear truth and use to build themselves up and allow them to stay true to who God created them uniquely to be. I can't recommend this book enough. I am gifting a few copies away to some special girls. I was blessed to receive an advanced reader's copy of Brave Beauty in exchange for my honest review.

Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless You by Lynn Cowell is perfect for girls or girls 8-12! With over 100 courage-building moments to reflect on Scripture and find confidence in God, rather than in someone, some place, or some thing girls will learn to be more confident than ever. Girls will learn who Jesus says they are and to put their confidence in that, rather than who the world tries to tell them they are. As the mom of 4 girls I absolutely love that this book helps girls build a strong foundation to face all that the world throws at them. Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless You by Lynn Cowell is not only a beautiful book, but a very necessary one in today's world! Disclosure: I received product(s) for free, in exchange for my honest review. I only recommend products I've used personally, and believe will be good fit for consumers.
