The first McGuire Brothers contemporary boasts suspense that burns as hot as the love scenes. It’s been 15 years since Jordan McKenna left Old Brookfield, N.Y., right after high school graduation. Gavin McGuire, who’s now the town’s fire chief, was dating her then and still isn’t over her. From his perspective, she just disappeared; he has no idea that Jordan ran off to New York City to become an actress and escape her abusive father. Unable to find success, she married a wealthy man who turned out to be another abuser. Hoping to save her daughters, she leaves him and brings the girls back to Old Brookfield. As soon as Gavin sees Jordan, he rushes to propose that they restart their relationship—a move quite at odds with his otherwise sensible attitude—and she calmly declines, determined to show her girls she’s able to stand on her own. But when an arsonist strikes the town, Jordan and Gavin end up working together to find the culprit while fanning their own embers of attraction into passion. This crafty romance, with its spirited characters, will leave readers anticipating the sequel. Agent: Jeanne Forte Dube, Forte Associates. (Sept.)

Prologue

Amber flames flickered swiftly along the faded walls of the old broken-down barn and lit up the June evening like a macabre bonfire. The heat from it seeped through Gavin's gear, making him feel as though he was wearing nothing at all. Anger and determination shimmied up his back while he and the men in his squad worked to squelch the intense blaze.

It was burning too hot.

Gavin McGuire had experienced all types of fires during his years on the job, and the ones that moved with this kind of superheated intensity usually had some help.

He'd bet his life that this was no accident.

His face mask was meant to protect him and feed him life-giving oxygen, but it practically smothered him tonight. The sound of his own heavy breathing rushed in his ears, along with the crackling and creaking of the dry wooden planks. The haunting groans of the barn as it was devoured almost sounded like a cry for help. The death wails of a structure engulfed in flames were eerily similar to the cries of a human being. Those were the shrieks and screams that tormented his sleep.

The voices of the past rarely fell silent for long.

Dark memories-the ones that simmered beneath the surface and had driven him to this profession in the first place-threatened to bubble up and consume him. But Gavin stuffed them down. Fear was a self-defeating emotion and not one he could afford, especially while leading his team. These men depended on him to make the right call every time.

There was no room for error.

Sloppy mistakes, foolish choices, or unnecessary risk got people killed.

Dirt and gravel scuffed beneath his heavy boots and he grunted with effort, directing the thick hose and its powerful stream of water onto the flames. It was a beast. Fire was a mindless, insatiable, and relentless creature that consumed anything and everything in its path.

If Gavin didn't stop it, the monster would keep on coming.

"Chief." Rick's voice came through the headset loud and clear, pulling Gavin from his thoughts. "We've got it contained, but this old barn ain't gonna make it. She's gonna come down."

"Copy that." Gavin nodded and focused on the flames that lingered along the western wall of the barn. "Have Engine Twelve's pumper keep on top of the surrounding area and continue dousing the field. It was a wet spring, but we don't want to take any chances. We've got four homes on the other side of this property that aren't empty. Stay on top of her."

"You got it," Rick said, his radio cutting out with a crackling snap.

Gavin adjusted his stance and blinked the sweat from his eyes, while steam and smoke drifted up from the almost burned-out building. He moved in closer and continued his unyielding attack on the flames that struggled for life, gasping for air but getting little.

The beast wouldn't win tonight.

Gavin has not been pining for Jordan this whole time. Or has he? When she returns to their hometown, he finds he has never stopped loving her. Jordan has had so much happen to her in life. Now, she must protect her children from harm. Going home is all she knows to do. Only home is where a fire bug is getting more excited. Great start to the McGuire Brothers series. There is a ton going on, great humor, and a sincere love story woven through it all. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!

This was pretty fantastic! I love the story of Gavin and Jordan reconnecting, it was so sweet. I thought they were great characters, good history and details for both. There was a nice amount of animosity between the two as well as playfulness and longing. Gavin was so wonderful! I just wanted to hug him, squeeze him, and love him. Devoted and sweet, I couldn't get enough of him. Jordan was great as well, I love her strength and determination. They were great together and I absolutely enjoyed their story, it was engaging. It was such a sweet story, so loving, and there was a nice amount of heat between the two. This story had me completely pulled in. Really good pace and development. I was curious about what would happen next. I thought it was a lighter story with some heavier content touched upon, it was laid out well. I liked the secondary story that was in play, it added a bit of drama and suspense. I really enjoyed all the characters that were introduced and the playfulness of Gavin's brothers. His parents were awesome as well. Jordan's daughters were adorable and I love how Gavin was with him. This was just a wonderful story. Heartfelt and romantic! I love stories about reconnecting and this was definitely a great one! Complimentary copy received for honest review.

Do you like a man in uniform? Meet Gavin, the Fire Chief of Old Brookfield, a small town set on the coast in New England. How about second chance at love stories? Jordan is the girl who got away; and she just moved home, newly divorced, with her two young daughters. Or how about stories of redemption? Jordan has moved back because her father, whom she has been estranged from for years is dying and she wants to confront the past. And let's not forget a dash of mystery - the fires that are being set around town. Who is setting them and why now? Quite a bit going on in this book, yes? There was lot to enjoy in this first story of the Maguire brothers series. The town and it's occupants definitely have a back seat to the rekindling of Jordan and Gavin's love story, however we get enough set up for follow up books. The clues to who the Firebug was weren't hidden very deep, and the red herrings weren't bad, though I did figure it out before the big reveal. I really liked how smart Jordan was and how she handled herself during the dark turn that had Gavin second guessing their relationship. I really appreciate when a female character isn't just reactive, but is sensible and thinks about what is really going on. It's funny that I always think of myself as being more into paranormal romances. So although the author's other series in that genre, Dead in the City, is on my list to one day read, it was this contemporary romance that grabbed my attention more. I couldn't help it, I do have a thing for firefighters... and second chances. That being said, the other series has easily slid higher on that someday pile now that I have partaken of and enjoyed the author's talents. I finished this book with a smile on my face and gave it 3 glitter covered stars. (2 young daughters... remember.) Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read and review the book.

Brave The Heat By Sara Humphreys “The haunting groans of the barn as it was devoured almost sounded like a cry for help. The death wails of a structure engulfed in flames were eerily similar to the cries of a human being. Those were the shrieks and screams that tormented his sleep.” Gavin McGuire is the fire chief in Old Brookfield. His job is his life. Due to an unfortunate event when he was younger he has dedicated his life to the fire department in his home town. Gavin has two problems which change how his life is going. One, someone is setting suspicious fires in Old Brookfield and his former girlfriend, the love of his life, has returned home. Jordan McKenna left town fifteen years ago without saying goodbye to anyone. Now she has returned to Old Brookfield with her two daughters, Lily and Grace. When Gavin sees her again, old feelings and questions rise to the surface. Jordan leads Gavin to believe that she has returned home because her father is very ill. That is not the only reason. Her ex-husband Ted was abusive and after years of putting up with his abuse, she found the courage to leave and took the girls back to her home town to start over. Both Gavin and Jordan have many demons they must put to rest before they can try to start over again. Gavin watched a boyhood friend die in a fire and another friend must now live with scars from the same fire. He suffers from the guilt that he could have done something to save his friend. Gavin is afraid to begin a relationship with Jordan because he is afraid that one day he might go to work and never return. He didn’t want to do that to Jordan and the girls. Gavin knew that Jordan’s father was abusive, but he had no idea how bad it actually was for Jordan and that was the reason she left. Jordan’s father has dementia and is dying. She is conflicted. He is dying, yet she needs to get a lot of things off of her chest before he does. Finally seeing him, he doesn’t recognize her, he is no longer the evil, abusive man she remembers but a sick, old man. Before he dies, they make their peace. As this conflict is going on between the two of them, Gavin must still find out who is setting fires around town before someone ends up dead. This is the first book in a new series by author Sara Humphreys. It will focus on the McGuire brothers and the women that capture their hearts. This is Gavin, the eldest McGuire brother, and Jordan’s story. I was drawn in immediately in the prologue with the description of the sounds of a fire expressed by Gavin. Anyone who has been around a fire of a wooden structure would agree with Gavin’s description. We find possible reasons for why Jordan’s father was abusive, even though there was no excuse for it and how Jordan must forgive him in the hopes of moving on with her life. The secondary characters in this story are fantastic. Maddy, Jordan’s oldest friend, is a business woman who is a realtor and owns a flower shop. She finds a place for Jordan and the girls to live and a job for Jordan in the flower shop. Maddy has been dating Rick, a fireman who works with Gavin, for years, but he refuses to make a serious commitment to her. He is married to the job, and not her. It is a dead end relationship. Unfortunately, a tragedy befalls Rick, causing Maddy to make some changes in her life. This story also has a twist. Who was starting the fires in town and why? Just when you think you have it figured out, you are redirected. I loved this story and the author did not dis

A beautifully told love story that focuses on two old flames finding their way back to each other. Jordan left home 15 years ago and never looked back. Now following her divorce, Jordan heads back to her hometown with her two young daughters. Going home mean opening old wounds and seeing the one man she never forgot. Gavin have never stopped loving Jordan McKenna. For fifteen years he has constantly thought about the one that got away. When Jordan returns old heartache and what if's are brought forefront.. Now he has a second chance to claim the woman he has never stopped loving and convince her to trust him into loving and keeping her and her girls safe. Plans and relationship are put on hold when an arsonist puts a plan into action forcing Gavin to walk away, causing more feeling of guilt and betrayal. An entertaining and fun read! I would definitely recommend this book to all romance lovers, especially those who love second chance romances. I received an eARC of the book compliments of the publisher via NetGalley for my honest review and opinion. All ratings and opinions stated are my own.

A second chance love story between Jordan, a divorced mother of the cutest two little girls and Gavin McGuire, Fire Chief of Old Brookfield. Jordan returns home, after being away for fifteen years to start a new life for her and her daughters. Gavin was Jordan's first love that ended with a misunderstanding. Can Jordan and Gavin just remain friends or will it lead it to more, even though there is a strong sexual chemistry between them. Add in the element of an arsonist, setting fires in the town, makes for this book to be a page turner. A great cast of characters. Loved Gavin, so strong and feels responsible for so much. Always the big brother. Jordan, had a terrible childhood from her father and them marries an abusive man, now she wants so much for her daughters. Gavin's parents are such a hoot, so happy to see a happy couple still so much in love after forty years. I can't wait to read more of the McGuire brother's stories. This is my first Sara Humphrey book, and I've waited for it since last spring. It was well worth the wait. I highly recommend this book!

I really love a good second chance love story and that is just what you get in the amazing new series by Sara Humphreys. This is Gavin and Jordan's story. Gavin has loved Jordan since they were kids and than one day she was gone, no word on where she went, and she never came back, never made contact. He ran away to the military to try to shake her memory, but nothing worked. To his surprise she is back in town, with her 2 little girls, and to everything he knows she is still married. Better for him to keep his distance. Until he finds out that Jordan is no longer with her husband and is back in town to stay. Jordan ran away from home all those years ago to escape an abusive father, not wanting Gavin to know what was really happening, and then was lied to by her "friend" telling her that he had hooked up with someone else and never gave her another thought. Now she is back in town, her father dying, and looking to create a safe, stable life for her girls. As secrets come to light, Gavin and Jordan decide to give it another go, a "do-over" you can say. But a fire bug is in town, burning down buildings and causing problems for Fire Chief Gavin and his department of volunteers. When tragedy strikes Gavin again, bringing back memories of the past, it will take all of Jordan's love, all of her strength to show Gavin that she is here to stay, that she is not going to run away ever again. What I loved about Gavin and Jordan is that after all the time had pasted, they still loved each other so deeply. They were like the other half of each other, and the girls where so sweet and innocent, worming their way into Gavin's heart and staying there. There are a few sad moments in the story, but besides being a second chance at love, this story is also about being the soft place to land when things get tough, about Gavin and Jordan having each others backs, supporting and loving, caring and protecting each other no matter what. I love the interaction with Gavin and his brothers, and Jordan's girls where funny and sweet, they added a touch of humor and light to this story. I look forward to the next installment in this wonderful new series and recommend this as the perfect end of summer read.

This is the first book that I have read of Sara Humphrey's so I was not sure what to expect in regards to her writing and story telling. I found that her books both contained deep gut wrenching stories but also was able to incorporate humor in the write places. Sara did a great job of developing the characters so that you felt like you really understood them and their past. She also did a great job of incorporating new characters that could be used for future books. In addition, I think she also did a great job of developing and setting the scene of the book. From what you read the town seemed just like any other small town in the US that you would like to live in. What I really enjoyed about this book was that she didn't go over the top with things. She kept a steady pace for the book, keeping the chapters just long enough not to drag on. I found that I really enjoyed the friendships that she created between the main characters and other characters as it made the story more that just about a love story. Lastly, I enjoyed the mystery that she had in the book about the fires that were being set. This allowed the reader the opportunity to try and solve if the fires were by accident or if someone was intentionally setting them. If I were to change anything in the book I would say I would have put more scenes of Jordan and her father interacting. I found that she talked about it a fair amount in the beginning of the book but when it got to the point of them seeing each other it stalemated after that. I think it is definitely something that was not a big loss because it wasn't a huge part of the story but something that would have definitely added more to the story and make it complete. I am very interested to read more in this series and the author. Can't wait for the next book!

Gavin and Jordan were high school loves. Gavin is from a large caring family with lots of brothers. Jordan on the other hand is an only child with an abusive father. Because of the abuse of her father she decides to leave town and leaves Gavin heartbroken and confused. 15 years pass and Jordan finally returns home and finds Gavin still living in town and still single. They seem to still have feelings for one another, but everything is different now. They have so many obstacles they face while trying to decide if they should be together or not, if it's worth the risk and fight. This is my first book by Sara and I loved it!!! She did an excellent job on this contemporary romance. I will be back for the rest of this series!!!!

BRAVE THE HEAT is the first installment in Sara Humphreys contemporary adult The McGuire Brothers romance series focusing on the McGuire brothers from the fictional town of Old Brookfield, New England. This is Fire Chief Gavin McGuire, and divorced mother Jordan McKenna’s second chance storyline. Told from dual third person perspectives BRAVE THE HEAT focuses on the rebuilding of a relationship between Jordan and Gavin-two people whose lives were destroyed fifteen years earlier when Jordan walked away and never looked back. Following her divorce, with her two young daughters in tow, Jordan returns to Old Brookfield and the past that has all but haunted her life. Knowing Gavin is now the Fire Chief wasn’t a surprise, but the pain and hurt in his eyes, was more than Jordan could bear. Gavin have never stopped loving Jordan McKenna. For fifteen years he has constantly thought about the one that got away; the whys and the what fors; never once coming close to understanding the reasons why Jordan ran without saying goodbye. Jordan’s return to Old Brookfield reawakens lost emotions and needs for Gavin but also for the woman he has never forgotten. But Gavin’s need to pursue Jordan will be placed on hold when an arsonist puts a plan into action forcing Gavin to walk away when yet, another loss, adds to Gavin’s already heightened sense of guilt and betrayal. The relationship between Gavin and Jordan has already been established; BRAVE THE HEAT is a second chance romance for two people whose lives changed the day Jordan ran and never looked back. In fifteen years neither one took the opportunity to contact one another or rekindle the friendship, and it is the loss of time that hurts the most. The romance is seductive without the over the top graphic sexual content. We are introduced to the secondary and supporting characters including Gavin’s brothers: Ronan, Tristan, Finn and Dillon; their mother Carolyn and father Charles who are about to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary; and Jordan’s best friend Maddie, along with her fire fighter boyfriend Rick. Several townsfolk play a role throughout the story including one that is both frightening and deadly. Jordan’s ex husband makes a cameo appearance but his storyline fizzles without resolution. The world building focuses on the relationship between Jordan and Gavin, and Jordan’s return to her home town but it also looks at the fires threatening a small town and its people. The McGuire family is a well to do and well loved family in Old Brookfield, and it is their history that the local school principal likes to remember and reminisce. BRAVE THE HEAT is an entertaining, engaging and fun read. The premise is intriguing and impassioned; the characters are colorful, family oriented and spirited; the romance is emotional and intense. Sara Humphreys writes a passionate tale of second chances, friendships and loss.

Jordan and Gavin have a history together. They fell in love in high school, but broke up when Jordan left town to avoid an abusive father. Gavin eventually moved on and became the town's fire chief. Jordan returns after 15 years, divorced with 2 children, and is instantly drawn to Gavin. Each is wary of the other because of their past, but eventually they find happiness again. Will their love be able to stand the test of time? This was a cute story, and it was well written. I loved Jordan's daughters and Gavin's volunteers. I wish the story hadn't wrapped up so fast, because I was looking for a little more romance. I would recommend this story to fans of romantic suspense and 2 chance at love. I was given a free copy for an honest review by netgalley.com

A second chance at love story with fast-paced, fire-fighting action A hot man like that was made for more than friendship... BRAVE THE HEAT by Sara Humphreys is the first intriguing installment in Sara's new The McGuire Brothers series. It's a contemporary romance set in the small town of Old Brookfield, an idyllic New England hamlet. BRAVE THE HEAT is the second chance at love story of Fire Chief Gavin Maguire, aka Captain Hotty Pants McGuire, and Jordan McKenna. I read it in one day as I couldn't put it down once I'd started. Gavin and Jordan were young lovers fifteen years ago. Then, after an argument, Jordan disappeared, without a word, leaving no trace. Jordan ended up marrying a rich Wall-Streeter and had two beautiful daughters. But all was not roses in that relationship, and Jordan has moved back to Old Brookfield for a new start to be near her parents as her father is ill. Neither Gavin nor Jordan have been able to forget the other. Gavin's dreams ended the day Jordan left and his emotional state where Jordan is concerned can only be described as raw. Is there a do-over in their future? Gavin is such a sweetheart. He was beyond awesome with Jordan's two girls. I loved his magic tricks! I was pulling for Jordan to give Gavin a chance but could understand her reluctance to take a leap when her girls were involved. Their chemistry jumped off the pages and it was impossible for either of them to deny it. This installment was romantic and suspenseful as there was a fire bug in Old Brooksfield setting fires endangering lives and property. It was over and above scary as the race was on to find the perpetrator as he became more brazen... and deadly. BRAVE THE HEAT was well-written and populated with an interesting cast of characters. I look forward to reading the stories of the other Maguire brothers. I personally hope that K-9 cop Ronan's is next and I hope his special someone is Jordan's friend, Maddy, who deserves a happy ever after of her own. A bonus is that readers would be treated to Bowser's story along the way. Bowser is Ronan's canine partner. Regardless, each one of the Maguire boys will make swoon worthy heroes. I loved the ending of this book which had me on the edge of my seat one minute and then melting into a puddle the next. If you enjoy second chance at love stories with fast-paced, unnerving, fire-fighting action and featuring sweltering chemistry, you need to pick up BRAVE THE HEAT!
