For a professional hockey player, winning the Stanley Cup is the pinnacle of your career. For Deacon “Tripp”Sanders, it a dream come true and a validation for him with his father. But as Deacon brings the cup home to Dallas for his turn with it, the festivities take a dark turn. Threats come in directed at Deacon and the Cup, and while he feels the threats are bogus, Deacon’s brother Gage brings his girlfriend Hallie’s security company on board to protect Deacon on the down low. Enter Brooke Henderson, former police officer, cousin to Hallie and newest member of the Bodyguards in Heels team. As Brooke tries to protect Deacon from a distance, Deacon only whats to get closer to the alluring Brooke. This story, for its small size, contained the perfect mix of romance and suspense! Although plenty of characters were introduced, it was not overwhelming at all. Deacon and Brooke had terrific chemistry together - nothing about their attraction was unrealistic. And I could only be intrigued by the Bodyguards in Heels, founded by Patti Mitchum as a company to employ her various granddaughters, all who have very different…...ah, skills. I will definitely keeping an eye out for the stories that need to be told about Carrie, Emma and Essie!

Breakaway Brooke by Angi Morgan is the third book in her Bodyguards in Heels series and was a fast paced, sweet and sexy little story that I could not put down. Brooke's "woo woo powers" are different from her cousins and some people might find this gift to be very appealing. Brooke is a former police officer who is trying to get on her feet after life threw her a major curve. Like Hallie and Carrie, Grammy/Patty has called her in to work a new case involving Gage's younger brother, Deacon. Deacon is a hockey player on this year's winning team. There is plenty of mystery, some humor, sparks of attraction between Brooke and Deacon that singe the pages and a very hard won HEA. I sure hope that Ms. Morgan plans to write more in this series because I seriously love it. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Hockey is my sport. I came to it honestly as college social experiences revolved around the Division I hockey team – what else was there to do on a Friday night? At a small DI school you interacted frequently with the players. They were classmates and friends. Also as a DI hockey school it was a huge part of non-academic learning. I can still remember a class hockey game. The 5 hockey players used it for practice, the majority of the rest of us were just trying to keep our feet on skates. What I learned through those interactions was that these were the nicest guys you will ever meet: off the ice. They were respectful, honest, caring, and involved in their local community, not to mention most of them were pretty hot. In other words, the perfect romance hero. Thankfully, I’m not the only one that has noticed this and hockey romances are somewhat easier to find these days. Breakaway Brooke is the third in Angi Morgan’s Bodyguards in Heels. A fun combination of magic and suspense, this series is a bit of a departure for Morgan. However, it fits her well. I can’t wait to see where she goes from here. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.

Brooke Henderson is an ex-cop and another cousin who is asked to join Hallie Barton’s newly formed bodyguard business, because they are out of womanpower. Brooke also has a special gift, which she doesn’t really know about, but Grammy Mitchum intends to tell her how to handle it. The thing is, Brooke’s gift is what, unknowingly, got her in trouble with the police. Brooke is a hockey fan, and her first job will be to keep an eye on her favourite player, Deacon Sanders. BREAKAWAY BROOKE is an augmented version of the novella which first appeared in the anthology Hot on Ice, and constitutes book 3 of the Bodyguards in Heels series. I liked but, but I suspect it was mostly due to the added bits and pieces, because the tone was vastly different from the two first instalments. Angi Morgan’s knowledge of hockey, the fans’ behaviour, and all the demands made upon the players is evident and it conferred a feeling of authenticity to the story. My main issue was with Brooke’s “gift”, which I found a bit silly, to be honest, and was really not much of an issue in the story, except for one amusing scene. BREAKAWAY BROOKE is a little different from Ms. Morgan’s usual fare: there is a bit more romance, not as much suspense, and I missed the sparkle of the previous 2 books, because it didn’t focus as much on the women, who are very impressive characters, and who still save the day. On the other hand, I really enjoyed Deacon’s interactions with his brother, as well as the changing relationship with his family, and the wonderful “gifted” cousins, as well as the lovable Grammy are as entertaining as ever. Now, I will be awaiting book 4 with bated breath, as it is Emma’s story, the Goth cousin, which should be fantastic! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
