Overview

USA Today bestselling author Catherine Gayle presents the first novel in the Portland Storm hockey romance series.

Portland Storm captain Eric "Zee" Zellinger knows how to get the job done, but leading his once elite team to victory is fast becoming a losing battle. He can't lose focus now-not with his career on the line. But when his best friend's little sister makes him an offer he can't refuse, Eric could lose the drive the team relies on from their captain.

Still in a downward spiral after a life-altering event in college, Dana Campbell is desperate to try anything to break away from the horror of that fateful night-even enlisting the help of the only man she trusts completely.

No matter how irresistible she is or how tempting the offer, Eric might not be able to cross that line-especially with the team's chance at the playoffs on the line. Now, Eric has to take one last shot, but will he choose Dana's Breakaway chance at happiness or the move that could secure his career?

Healing with love. Breakaway hit home with me on so many levels, and it made me appreciate the story all the more. Dana is a young woman that had a bright future in hockey until one terrible night after a game when she was brutally raped by a group of men. She is a former shell of herself for the obvious reasons, but she knows that she needs to overcome her fear of men to live again. After seven years of self-imprisonment she has come up with a plan to begin the healing process. She travels to visit her brothers best friend, Eric to enlist his help. Eric has always loved Dana but knows that nothing could ever come from that love, but when she shows up asking for help he cannot say no. What is supposed to be a courtship of healing becomes a full-out romance that neither Dana or Eric can prevent from happening or the heartbreak that could come from it. Breakaway is very emotional, and you feel for Dana every step of the way. Your heart breaks for her when she try’s to overcome the things we take for granted; like receiving a touch on the arm. Eric is a wonderful man that wants to do right by the woman he secretly loves, his best friend (her brother) and the hockey team he is captain of. Not everything always goes right, but he truly fights to make it right at the cost of his happiness sometimes. The cast of characters is great and not only are their some scenes that make you want to cry their are hilarious scenes that leave you smiling. I recommend readers to read this book, it’s uplifting and romantic. I am really looking forward to this series.

I'm not really a hockey fan but this was more real than a lot of stories I have read. The book brought a very good story to light. Good story to read.

As soon as I saw the plot for Breakaway, I knew it was definitely a book that I wanted to read. Sports Romance novels are definitely one of my favourite guilty pleasures and this book did not disappoint. The synopsis of the book intrigued me from the start, as it had multiple genres of books that I absolutely love .... Contemporary Romance, Sports Romance, Forbidden Romances just to name a few. When we are introduced to Dana Campbell we are heartbroken from the tragedy that she is trying to overcome from being raped in College, you just want something to go right for her. However, when the idea is introduced that she needs to get intimate with someone that she feels comfortable with - and that person being her brothers best friend who also happens to be the captain of a NHL team Eric "Zee" Zellinger, the book seems to take an interesting turn. Catherine Gayle does a fabulous job in creating a story line that is somehow intertwines sadness, romance with spurts of comedy intertwined and the ability to try for a second chance. I loved the characters of both Dana and Eric and was rooting for them from the start. As Eric and Dana have so much rich history and chemistry, it was great to see them try to overcome the aftermath of Dana's attack. Eric was so patient, so kind and loving towards Dana, that it was super easy to fall in love with him. Dana's ability to overcome what life tragically threw her way, was hopeful to say the least. I absolutely loved the secondary characters in the book and hope they surface in the other books in this series. If you are a fan of romance, second chance at love, sports romance and just a great story, then this is the book for you. Catherine Gayle has written a fantastic story of friendship, overcoming your fears and the ability to find love and be able to trust again. I cannot wait to read the next book in the Portland Storm series and definitely recommend this book as the next book to be added to your To-Be-Read Shelf! Wonderful read!

GJRA. I really enjoyed this romance, but gave 4 stars because did not undersrand hockey terms & went into a lot of wordy details at times. Loved Eric and Dana, it was hard to read about the rape and the damage it did to Dana! A lot of insight into it. Highly recommend? GJRA

I have been reading a lot of junk lately. I couldn't get into the his/her chapters with gang rape, sex therapy, & a greedy waitress.A real turn off.

For a macho sports jock, Z shows incredible patience with Dana's fears after a traumatic experience in her youth. Sometimes his patience almost seemed to drag on TOO long, but touching book none the less

I love this book. As a huge hockey fan myself, it was exciting to see a whole series of hockey romances because there aren't a lot of them out.
