Breaking a Legend: A Kavanagh Legends Novel by Sarah Robinson

Hailed by Rachel Van Dyken as “equal parts sexy, intense, and emotional,” Sarah Robinson’s blistering-hot series debut introduces the Kavanagh brothers—mixed martial arts fighters who work hard, play hard, and love with all their hearts.

As one of the big names at his family’s gym, Legends, MMA star Rory Kavanagh is used to being in the spotlight—until a gruesome leg injury knocks him out of the cage. Rory is left feeling sidelined in more ways than one, battling the inner demons that come with losing the one shot at his dreams. Then Clare walks into his life and gives him a new dream: winning her heart. There aren’t many new faces in Woodlawn these days, but this tough, beautiful stranger makes Rory want to get his life back into fighting shape.

Clare Ivers doesn’t think she’ll be able to tell anyone what really brought her to the close-knit Bronx neighborhood where she just started bartending. But her life’s on pause and her past is catching up fast, try as she might to move on—with new friends, steady work, and a chiseled alpha male trying to get her attention. Even though Rory’s more than a little intense, she can’t deny that her heart beats faster when he looks at her with those soulful silver eyes. Clare thought she was done with love, but Rory might just be man enough to show her she thought wrong.

This is the worst book I have ever read. The online reviews were very good so I bought it. I forced myself to keep reading and gave up at page 75. Why don't people write honest reviews? Don't bother with his book it is a waste of time and tremendous effort to try and read. I gave it one star because I had to so I could enter this review.

“A rugged fighter who’s hurt and struggling to find a new life? A tough heroine who tells it like it is but harbors a secret of her own? And a loving Irish clan? I’m totally there! Breaking a Legend has it all! Sarah Robinson has a serious knockout on her hands!”—Katie Rose, award-winning author of The Heat of the Moment

This was my first MMA book (I am normally a hockey romance girl) and I loved it. Sarah Robinson did a wonderful job of creating a book that had it all. It was sexy, funny, caring, sexy, gritty, sensual, sexy, entertaining, warm, heartfelt -- Oh, and did I say sexy. Rory and Clare were a wonderful couple and I can't say enough about the Kavanagh family. I can't wait to read the other brother's books. This may be Sarah Robinson's first book, but it certainly won't be her last.

Rec'd an ARC for an honest review from Netgalley. This story is about a MMA prize fighter Rory Kavanagh who suffered injuries and is addicted to pain medication and alcohol Rory comes from a big Irish Catholic family. He meets Claire Ivers @ the local bar, where she works as a bartender. Claire loss both her parents when she was younger and moved from California to NYC to get away from her drug dealing abusing ex-boyfriend. Can Claire help Rory comes to terms with his life and his addictions? Can Rory help protect and love Claire? This story is so much more then 2 people falling in love, its about family, friends and the love of animals.

I will be the first to admit I am not one to avidly read fight type books. But I took a chance on Breaking a Legend. I am glad I did. First off I want to start by saying the main two characters Rory and Claire are written beautifully and it's like they really come to life in your mind as you read a long and learn their story and their past. I also want to mention this book isn't all about fighting or being in the ring. There is a true broken down love story behind it all. You have Claire who is running from the ghosts of her past and then you have Rory who is truly broken but learning to give back. Together they are kind of opposites, but at the same time have a strong connection of things in common. Together can they learn how to overcome it all? You will need to read it to see. As for the overall book it is well written. It is very descriptive while going into great details making it easy to follow a long and visualize the story in your head like a movie. That is always what I like to look for when reading a book. I want to be able to picture it all play out in my mind while reading and this book does this beautifully.

Rory “Knockout” Kavanagh had a great life. One of the top 10 MMA fighters in the nation. He trained, practiced, and sparred a lifetime for this fight. All of a sudden, blinding pain. A kick in the knee bent it the wrong direction, bones sticking out, searing pain, blackness. Rory became addicted to the pain drugs and used alcohol to numb the pain. Getting kicked out of one bar, he headed off to another, O’ Leary’s. One where he was well known and didn’t really go too much anymore. He was too noticed as the once great MMA fighter he was. Now an addict and a drunk. Legends is the name of the gym that Rory’s father owns, and where he trained, and where his brothers now train. In fact they want Rory to train his brother Kane. He reluctantly agrees. After which he really needs his drugs to kill the throbbing pain in his leg. Clare Ivers Just started working at O’Leary’s and Rory takes an interest in her. Clare is running and hiding from and ex-boyfriend. She’s hoping being across the country in New York that the ex won’t think of looking there for her. Clare and Rory start seeing each other. Rory waits for her to get off work late at night and walks her home. Clare mentions how much he smells like alcohol and how she hates the smell. Rory decides to quit drinking and using drugs. He’s really attracted to Clare and wants to have a serious relationship with her. I loved this story, it wasn’t insta-love that is most stories. There was attraction that builds into a loving relationship. I loved Rory and Clare’s story and I am waiting for the brothers stories. I was given an ARC of this book by NetGalley for an honest review.

Great Book! This is a great book; this is the first book in the Kavanagh Legends series by Sarah Robinson. Rory Kavanagh was a MMA star until he got a gruesome leg injury which knocked him out of the cage. He is feeling lost and battling his inner demons until Clare walks into his life. Clare Ivers is running from her past and just started working as a bartender in the close knit Bronx neighborhood. When the sexy Rory Kavanagh paying attention to her she doesn’t know if she should run or give into the attraction. The characters and story is great and will keep you reading way past your bedtime. If you are looking for a great romance then you need to read this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

I received a free copy of this book from the author on Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. Rory and Claire, what a cute, exciting couple. I enjoyed this book immensely. There was their budding romance and how wonderful Rory was with Claire; Rory's family dynamic's; Claire's secrets; animal rescue and romance oh yes and MMA. What else could have been put into this book? I haven't a clue, but it was great fun to read. I would recommend this book to contemporary romance reader's and those who enjoy sports/romance books. This book did not gave a cliff hanging ending, but I see this as a possible series with all the great supporting characters

Great read of what I hope is the beginning of a new series. Rory was a famous MMA fighter when he got sidelined with an injury. Still in pain and not sure what to do with his life, until he meets Clare, new to the area and with plenty of secrets of her own. Will these two let each other in and find love? Steamy with lot of emotion and the characters are excellent. Wonderful Read!

I really enjoyed this one and I am so happy to have discovered a new author to follow! This is my first book by Sarah Robinson but now I have to have more. Completely enjoyed her writing style and the way she brought the characters to life. In this book we meet the large and boisterous Kavanagh family and this story is about Rory. Previously a top contender in the MMA world but due to an injury finds himself unable to fight, hurting, and a bit lost. Turning to booze and pills is the only way he's getting through each day. Clare Ivers is new to the tight-knit Bronx community but everyone knows the Kavanagh's. When she captures Rory's attention she knows he's the last thing she needs in her crazy mixed up life. She has her own secrets but resisting him may be more than she can handle. Could these two possibly end up saving each other?? I highly recommend you grab this one and find out.

I enjoyed this story very much and thought it was well written. The characters are intense and have wonderful chemistry. There is mystery, determination, secrets and a family full of love and understanding. I couldn't put it down and can't wait for more of the Kavanagh family! Don't miss out on this series. Gifted a copy for an honest review

Breaking a Legend is book one in the brand new Kavanagh Legends series by Sarah Robinson. This series is off to a great start and promises to keep us entertained for a long time to come as we get to know the sexy Kavanagh brothers. In this first book, we are introduced to Rory, the eldest of the brothers, as he deals with the loss of a promising career as a fighter and how it took Clare coming into his life and opening his heart to finally enable him to find his way again. Rory Kavanagh thought he had it all. His career as an MMA fighter couldn’t be going better. But one mistake changed everything. Now, a year later, he still struggles with the pain from that day and uses alcohol and pills to dull both the physical pain and the emotional scars. His best friend is his constant companion, a rescue dog he adopted and rehabilitated, Ace. Rory had a reputation for his constant one night stands but the night he first saw the new tiny little blonde bartender at his family’s favorite bar, he knew she was something different. “He liked Clare, and he had no intention of breaking her heart. What he wanted was to possess it.” Clare Ivers moved to New York to start a new life. She had so many secrets she left behind in California. All she wanted was a fresh start. She didn’t want or need a man in her life. She just wanted to stay invisible. But something about Rory Kavanagh made her feel safe and comfortable. When he started showing up at the bar every night to walk her home, she knew she should resist but she just couldn’t. “Clare, pull yourself together. Repeat, I do not want to date Rory Kavanagh. I do not want to kiss Rory Kavanagh. I do not want to jump Rory Kavanagh…I at least want to jump Rory Kavanagh.” Rory doesn’t like who he has become over the past year. Clare doesn’t hesitate to point out what he has let his life sink to. With Clare, Rory can see a glimmer of what he could be without the drugs and alcohol but does he have the strength to give it up? “He found himself wanting to remember who he was, and he had a feeling that he could do that only through her eyes.” Clare and Rory are exactly what each other needs at exactly the right time. I loved this Kavanagh family. This is a huge Irish family with strong parents and even stronger sons. Their life revolves around the gym they own and operate, Legends. This is where Rory used to train to be a fighter and where now his brother is training. Claire has never had a big family so she suddenly finds herself thrust into the midst of this big family and thrives in their midst. Just when she thinks that her life might be settling into something wonderful, though, the past has a way of coming back to haunt you and that is exactly what happened. Is she strong enough to trust in Rory and his family to help her or will she run again, give it all up and try to start again fresh somewhere else? “If you’re not going to believe in yourself, then why should anyone else” “That’s all trust is, she thought. Trust is just a choice. Someone can’t earn your trust if you don’t choose to let them, to give them the chance to show you.” I loved getting to know Rory and Clare. They were perfect together. Their chemistry was hot and steamed up the pages. The Kavanagh family promises to keep us entertained for a long time to come as we get to know Rory’s brothers. I wonder who Sarah will feature next in Saving a Legend?

*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.* Once a renowned MMA fighter, Rory Kavanagh now spends his days and nights in a haze of alcohol, pills, and women. He is unable to come to terms with the loss of his last fight, or the devastating injury that ended his career, until he meets Claire Ivers. Claire, running from an abusive, dangerous man tells herself she is not ready to be involved with any man, but she can't seem to stop her heart from beating faster whenever Rory is around. I like this romance a lot and I like the author's clear, concise writing style. I am looking forward to reading the stories to come about the rest of the Kavanaghs.

Rory used to be a legendary M M A fighter. But then Rory had a horrible leg injury and he could no longer fight. Now Rory drinks a lot, uses drugs with his leg as an excuse and has a lot of meaningless sex. Claire moves to NYC to try and start over.Claire had been an orphan and made mistakes. Claire has been abused by her ex and filled with deceit, and addiction with the abuse. Claire has started a self defense class and that is when she met the Kavanagh family. Rory was the oldest son. Rory knows he has to change and Claire is a great reason. There is a burning attraction between Rory and Claire. Rory bust past Claire’s walls and helped Claire regain confidence to be who she is. Rory also rescued a dog named Ace who had a rough life before Rory got him. Rory and Claire had quickly become friends and the relationship goes from there. I liked this story but felt Rory’s and Claire’s romance built way to fast. Also sometimes the writing just seemed off to me. The story became a little predictable and was slightly repetitive in some places. Another thing that bothered me is once Rory and Claire were together Rory’s problems and issues ex- drinking and drugs- didn’t really seem to matter or be brought up any more. I still enjoyed the story and liked Rory and Claire and the other characters in this story. I laughed in some spots also and definitely liked Ace. So I didn’t hate it but didn’t quiet love it either. I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.

Breaking a Legend is a sexy, sweet, story. Rory is pure alpha and all he wants to do is protect Clare. Clare is broken and has a haunted past with an ex-boyfriend that she is running from. She enters the O’Leary’s Pub where she meets Rory, an MMA fighter with a drug and alcohol problem of his own. They are very much attracted to each other, but Clare doesn’t want to get close to another man. Rory wants to keep her safe, no matter the cost to himself. This is a very sweet and haunting story about two people who come together just when they need someone the most. They push past their demons because of their undeniable chemistry to create a new relationship with each other. I love how protective and sweet Clare makes Rory feel. The big, bad, MMA fighter’s softer side comes out with his lady love. Meanwhile, Clare feels loved and protected in a way she never thought she could. Something she never thought would happen, again. But, she is still scared and doesn’t want to share her full story with anyone. While I did enjoy this story, the changing POVs got confusing and threw me off. If that kind of thing doesn’t bother you, then this is a great book to read. *Copy provided for review.

For those who read my reviews, you know my favorites in Sports Romance are MMA Fighters and Football Quarterbacks. And Sarah Robinson just gave me one heck of an awesome MMA steamy sexy romance. Holy Smokin' Hotness! In Breaking A Legend, there’s so much more than just a story about one gorgeous hunk of an MMA fighter; there is a whole beautiful family of sexy brothers who are MMA fighters, plus a handsome MMA dad who trains his sons and also owns the family MMA club and gym, Legends. Oh, plus one brother who is a gorgeous cop. Yep, with a family of MMA fighters, you’re going to need one of the Kavanagh brothers to be in law enforcement to keep the other brothers in line, or try to keep them out of jail. Rory is the oldest, then we have the twins, Kane and Kieran, and Quinn and the youngest is Jimmy. Kane is a notorious ladies man, his twin, Kieran, is in prison (yep, cop brother couldn't keep this bad boy brother out), Quinn is the odd brother out, with his arms and chest covered in tattoos and his body piercings, Jimmy is the police officer. The Kavanagh brothers are well known in the Bronx for their fighting skills and athletic bodies, especially among the ladies. Rory 'Knockout' Kavanagh is the best MMA fighter in the nation. This first book is Rory's story. Rory is living in his own self-medicating world of booze and pills. He's having one heck of a pity party after a leg injury that ended his MMA career. Rory is angry at the world for loosing his one shot, but then along comes Clare Ivers. Clare has just moved to town and starts bartending at the neighborhood bar, O'Leary's Pub. Clare is feisty. She has spirit and pride. And she doesn't take orders from any man. This is just the kind of woman Rory needs right now in his life. But, Clare has her own secrets for why she moved and is hiding out in the small neighborhood. Clare doesn’t want to get attached to anyone, but that’s not working out too well for her when she meets the big, beautiful Irish man, Rory, and his lovable dog, Ace. Rory’s starting to feel like a winner again with Clare by his side, he just hopes he can keep her there long enough for Clare to trust in him. Breaking A Legend is an amazing, touch-your-heart story about family, brotherhood, hope, love, romance and a wonderful dog named, Ace. Rory and Clare are both broken people but, they need each other’s love to finally win. I highly recommend Rory and Clare's fight for love story as a must read.

4 star I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, drugs use, pain, secrets, and heartbreak. This is Clare and Rory’s story. Rory is spiraling out of control. He meets Clare and he wants to be clean for her. The more he runs into her the more he wants to have her. Clare is running from her past. She is trying to build a life but knows she might have to run again at any moment. She is falling for Rory but she knows she has to fight the pull. Can Rory make her stay or will he never understand why she must leave? Once Rory knows about her past will he even want her? Will she want Rory when she finds out his secrets? Can these two overcome their pasts and the secret they have kept from each other to star a new life? Or will the past catch up with them and ruin everything they have worked for? I loved these characters and also the side characters. I was disappointed that the withdrawal symptoms were not more realistic. His withdrawal was super easy. If this was realistic people would not ever fear having withdrawal symptoms. I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read. I recommend this book.

Reviewed by Angela and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog Sarah Robinson kicks it off to a good start. This first installment of the Kavanagh Legends was a charming and sexy read. Brazen on my part to pick this book based on the cover alone, but I am relieved that the author delivered. I was hooked by the sexy cover and captivated by the knockout story. Rory Kavanagh, best MMA fighter in New York is down on his luck. After a bad loss, Rory is left battling a bad injury preventing him from fighting again. Meds, booze and women keep him company but being a part of the Kavanagh family, he still couldn’t stay away from the sport. Legends, the local MMA club and gym is owned by his family after all. It’s only a matter of time and an extra push to get him back in the ring. Clare Ivers is different, and she may be that extra Push Rory needs. She is down to earth, and she put him in his place when needed. She is also everything that Rory is not used to seeing and she will shock him out his stupor. Unfortunately, her past prevents her from making the big step Rory wants. It will get ugly for her before she even gets close to a happy ending. Lucky for her, the Kavanagh clan got her back. I was sucked in Ms. Robinson’s MMA world. She presented a hero who is both weak and strong making him even more realistic. The touch of addiction was dead on, and the beat part is that though this family has money they are all down to earth. The Kavanagh brothers are Irish by blood and tradition and loyal to the bone. This close-knit family sucked me in with their dedication to each other and their passion for the sport. The Kavanagh family include Kane, Quinn and Jimmy, Keiran and cousin, Casey. Kieran intrigued me the most. Very little information about him was revealed, but I am curious to find out what the fallout between him and Rory was about. Up next is his book, Saving a Legend release scheduled for March of next year.

Rory meets Clare at the bar where she works. Her boss is kind of a jerk. So that night she sees Rory punch her boss. Then she meets him again at the family gym. Clare wants to improve her life, as well as the quality of life. She listens to her new friend and signs up for a defense class. Rory is there training his little brother to fight. Rory is a champion. A legend. He used to be the best in the nation. As an MMA fighter, he was hard to beat. Then about a year ago, he was given an injury that sidelined his plans. Now he is suffering to come back to the living and be present in the now. Clare makes Rory want. He wants better for himself, and better for her. Can that better be them together? He has never felt for anyone what he feels for her. He wants her to see that she is different, so he takes his time. Walking and talking with her. Clare has a past full of pain and problems. She has given up her hopes for the future, and her plans to be a veterinarian. Now, she is forging ahead on a new life. She has a new job, a new man, and plans to get back to school. Will her past derail all she is working so hard to attain? Rory and Clare's banter is so good. I want to quote the whole book to you. Instead, I will highly recommend you read this beginning to the Kavanagh Legends series. Great start and good story. ***This ARC was given by Netgalley.com and its publisher in exchange for an honest review only.
