3.75 stars: BREATHLESS is the third novella in Brigid Kemmerer’s contemporary, young adult (YA) Elemental paranormal series focusing on the four Merrick brothers whose powers specialize in the four elements-water, air, fire, and earth. Breathless is the introduction to Nick Merrick’s storyline and one that gives the reader a closer look at Nick’s reluctance to accept Quinn as his permanent ‘girlfriend’. Brigid Kemmerer touches on a topic that can be controversial for young adult and teens. When Nick Merrick finds himself torn between what society expects and what he feels for another young man he knows that he isn’t the only one with similar feelings. Confusion about his new found attraction to Adam is the beginning of the next stage in Nick’s young life. The secondary characters play a small role throughout the story but the focus is on Nick’s conflicted feelings. His emotional stability is dependant on his family and friend’s acceptance, and the acceptance of the young man who is the recipient of Nick’s new found feelings.

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog*** Breathless by Brigid Kemmerer Book 2.5 of the Elemental series Publisher: K Teen Publication Date: April 30, 2013 Rating: 4 stars Source: eARC from NetGalley Summary (from Goodreads): Too many secrets. Not enough time. Nick Merrick is supposed to be the level-headed one. The peacemaker. Since it’s just him and his three hotheaded brothers against the world, that’s a survival tactic. But now he’s got problems even his brothers can’t help him survive. His so-called girlfriend, Quinn, is going quick as mercury from daring to crazy. Meanwhile, Quinn’s dancer friend Adam is throwing Nick off balance, forcing him to recognize a truth he’d rather shove back into the dark. He can feel it—the atmosphere is sizzling. Danger is on the way. But whatever happens next, Nick is starting to find out that sometimes nothing you do can keep the peace. What I Liked: This will be a rather short review, because I'm reviewing a novella, and the novella itself is pretty short. I feel so bad because I've had an eARC of this one for MONTHS now - nearly a year, to be honest. My bad, K Teen! Forgive me, please! I really enjoyed the novella, if that helps! I think this novella is well-placed. It comes between books two and three. Book four is the full-length novella featuring Nick and his story. So, it's kind of cool to get to see what Nick is all about, before his book comes out. I've already read and reviewed Secret, but I still totally appreciate the purpose and timing of this novella. This novella is a novella - therefore, it is very short. So, I'm not going to summarize the story. But I like the pacing of the novella, because Kemmerer does manage to fit in a story with a plot and a climax into this short story. She keeps readers interested with several key events, and even integrates a bit of character development in the story. Nick is so confused about himself, and that is evident in this novella. His whole life, he seems to have had things figured out. In reality, nothing is concrete with Nick. His academics, his social life, his familial life, his being... he doesn't have everything mapped out for himself. You have to feel for Nick. He always appears to be the one that's totally put-together, but in reality, he's confused. He needs to get away, to get out. Once again, Kemmerer has worked her magic, and she has successfully made readers FEEL. Love! What I Did Not Like: There wasn't anything I didn't like. This just wasn't a 5-star read for me. An awesome novella for sure though! Would I Recommend It: As with most novellas, this one is not necessary to read, to understand the rest of the series. In fact, each full-length novel in this series acts as a companion novel in the series. So, you could read any of the books or novellas without having to read any of the others. That being said, I still think fans of this series, or new readers of this series should read this novella. It gives so much perspective, in terms of Nick and his quiet, private nature. And if you have not read Secret yet, you'll know that any peek at Nick's personal life is a gift, because he doesn't reveal much. Rating: 4 stars. A wonderful novella! Short, sweet, and to the point. Nick's point of view is exactly what I thought it would be!

Alphas- The highest rank in the pack. Always leading the pack in hunts and battles, and are the wolves in charge. There is one male and one female, and the more dominant of the two is always the pack leader. The pack leader can be male or female.
Betas- Betas are the second highest rank, and the closest adviser to the Alphas. Like Alphas, there is one male and one female in every pack. Betas give advice to the Alphas, and step in for the leader when he/she are out forming alliances or marking borders.
Dark Wolves- Dark wolves are the police of the pack. They are technacly third in comand, but they have a different kind of athority in that they are the rule enforcers, not rule makers. They will go to extremes to make sure the pack is in order, sometimes risking their own lives. Their ways are mysterious and dark, but their fighting spirit is truly the best in the pack. They can be any gender, and there are ussualy only up to six in the pack at one time.
Shadowed Wolves- Shadowed wolves are Dark wolves' assistants and servants. They report any dissorder in the pack to the dark wolves, who take care of it. Shadowed wolves are also very mysterious, but they are highly regaurded as some of the best fighters in the pack, second to only the Dark Wolves. There are also only six of these in a pack at one time.
Deltas- Delta wolves are the protectors of the upper class wolves. This includes the Alphas and Betas, plus the Shadowed and Dark wolves. They are very strong, and are mostly the guards for the pack. There are three of these at a time, plus a handful of higher ranking scouts and hunters.
Elder Wolves- Elder wolves are not nessecarily old, but they are senior members of the pack who have shown their loyalty and devotion to their Alphas. They are often the wisest in the pack.
Hunters and Scouts- Hunters and Scouts are regular members of the pack. Hunters are closest to the alphas durring whole pack hunts, and they also hunt for the pack seperately when needed. Scouts are spies for the pack, and they scout out territory with Alphas pre-raid, nd lead border patrols regularly. Hunters and Scouts choose their path right after they become old enough to be a real part of the pack.
Pups- Pups are aged from just born to three months, and then are given a mentor based on their parent's rank. They are their parent's sucessors, and they will take the place of their parents when tey pass away or move packs.
Omegas- Omegas are the lowleyest members of te pack. They are babysitters for the pups durring pack activities, nd are only bumped up to regular members when their loyalty is show.

This is to be read with the series. This should actually be read after Spirit and before Secret. It was so night to get a little into Nick's head and finally figure out his big secret.

This was an amazing short story! I wished it could've beenlonger. This story made me love Nick so much more and helped to show a different side of Quinn. I can't wait to read Nick's full story. I hope there's more of Adam too! I thought Gabriel was my favorite Merrick but it might now be Nick. These stories get better each time a new one comes out. Seriously, this one is my favorite!!!!

To the people complaining about a waste of money, what did you expect? This book was under $2 and the full length ones were over 7. I personally loved this book, honestly when I open it up and saw that was next story I was a little disappointed because he didn't seem all that interesting to me and I didn't really want to read about Quinn. But was in the first two pages I was extremely intrigued, lots of twists and no disappointments. I can't wait to read his full story in the next book. Like really I can't wait. January is too far away!!

Breathless, though short, revealed many things the previous books never had a chance to explore. Nick has become my favorite Merrick and while i was already a huge fan of the series, I am now a devoted fan. Kemmerer is such a talented author, her writing style one I have been searching for for a long time. But Kemmerer's true brilliance lies in her characters. I admire how Kemmerer deftly creates seemingly perfect characters, then proceeds to reveal every last flaw in them. She creates gods, then makes them human. Thank you so much for introducing the Merricks to me. I can't wait to learn more about Nick. Brigid Kemmerer, I love you!!

Nick is the quiet, sensible, intelligent one of the twins. A likeable guy, although we haven't got to know a lot about him so far. Nick's story here is really sweet. While he's never had really strong feelings or emotions for a girl, I don't think he had thought he could have them for a guy. I loved seeing his reactions to Adam. Something so new and yet, seemingly, so strong. I don't honestly remember too much about Quinn at this point, or how I felt about her in previous books. And even with seeing all her problems now, when I should have felt sorry for her, she really didn't appeal to me. Though I am interested in seeing how things go with them and their planned secret, which I just discovered is the name of book four and I can't wait for it. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Nick's family will deal with this, and I'm hoping it won't be as bad as Nick thinks it will. Also, Adam is a cute guy that I'd like to get to know better. I'm also wondering if Matt, the guy from the beach, is going to make a reappearance.

This is one of my favorite series lately, so I was really excited to get a chance to read a quick novella in between the main books. Nick has been an intriguing character to me in this series, so it was nice to get to know him a bit more. Nick's always been kind of quiet and down to earth, so he's been a favorite for me. He seems like the polar opposite to his brother Gabriel, who always seems to live his life on the outside of his skin. So Nick being a bit more calm and reserved is interesting. Let's just say that this novella allows you to get to know him a bit more, and I was really kind of surprised by what I find out in this novella. Who knew that Nick might be struggling with sexual identity? I think this is a good set up for Nick's book, sort of paving the way for what is probably going to happen when Nick gets his own book. I felt, however, that with such a surprising element to be revealed about Nick, that the author perhaps could have dropped a few small hints in prior books so that the reader isn't quite so shocked when reading this novella. As it was, I was floored because there had never been any hints leading up to this. Nice visit into the Elemental world. I'm looking forward to the next full featured book!

Nick Merrick's novella did not disappoint. Every time we get a look inside the head of a different Merrick brother draws me into the story of these Elementals. I only wish this one could have been a bit longer, but Nick will get his own book later on, so I can't complain too much, maybe the author is holding some ideas back for that. The kiss scene was excellent! If you haven't read this series yet it is a fantastic contemporary/paranormal YA! Start with the e-novella Elemental, then Storm (Book 1), Fearless (e-novella), Spark (Book 2), Breathless (e-novella), and Spirit (Book 3) comes out on May 28th!

Nick Merrick is Mr. Cool as Air. Supposed to be, anyway. In truth, he’s just as confused and messed up as every other teen in existence. He feels he can’t tell anyone about it, his brothers need him to be the voice of reason. Besides, it’s not like they would understand what he was going through anyway… In book 1, Storm, I had this vibe about Nick, which I pretty much wrote off, because as a fangirl I tend to have that vibe a lot, and it rarely pans out. In book 2, Spark, I gave up on the idea completely, figuring it was just wishful thinking. Turns out, not so much. I’d wondered how in the hell Nick and Quinn got together, because that had never seemed right to me. Aww, Quinn, poor messed up thing. You can do so much better. As for Adam, I don’t know him well enough to like him yet, so I am on the fence. I will say, though, hot damn these Merrick boys sure are attracted to the scarred and damaged.
