About the Author

In 1998, Captain George Burk's USAF (Ret.) story of his experience as a plane crash and burn survivor, The Bridge Never Crossed-A Survivor's Search for Meaning, generated an outburst of praise from everyone who read it. On May 4, 1970, George was the sole survivor of 14 Air Force personnel in a military plane crash. He suffered extensive burns, and multiple internal injuries. This motivational speaker and author returns with another book presenting many of the lessons and principles of life learned as a survivor and "overcomer."
George Burk is a highly decorated military officer and public servant who presently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is a nationally recognized motivational speaker, trainer and writer whose mission is to "entertain, inform, inspire and persuade."
As a plane crash and burn survivor, George Burk shares with you his experiences, principles, and values you can use on your journey; they are valid and work because George uses them in his own life.

What People are Saying About This

Helen L. Campbell

Thank you George for sharing your journey with us. You do make a difference in people's lives....I know, because you've made a difference in mine. -- (Helen L. Campbell, Executive Director, State Firemen's & Fire Marshals' Association of Texas)

Michael Kazyak

....[W]hat would happen if your life was a living hell? Read this book. George Burk has been to hell. Sharing his experiences and putting into perspective the precious commodity called life. George shows us that when there are two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the game is far from over. -- (Michael Kazyak, Dow Corning, Midland, Michigan)

Deborah Weisberg

I thought I was going to be writing about a plane crash victim who had survived. Instead, I wrote about a survivor who had triumphed....Burk survived by reaching deep inside himself to a place he never knew existed, and finding an energy he never knew he had. It is a place he has tapped many times since the crash. With characteristic courage, enthusiasm and compassion, Burk shares his story, so that we may find our special place, too. -- (Deborah Weisberg, Reporter, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

A. Gray

Your determination and professionalism are examples for all of us to follow. You are commended for your many contributions to your community and your assistance to other burn survivors. This award is especially significant in that you are the first Marine Corps employee selected fior this prestigious honor. -- (A. M. Gray, General, U. S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps)

Joe Howard

A Bridge Never Crossed is the incredible story of George Burk's survival of a tragic plane crash, the unlikely series of events that saved his life, and his inspirational refusal to die. ...George has spent the balance of his life sharing what he has learned about work, leadership, faith, and the true meaning of "quality of life". He believes that angels walk among us. I believe that George is one of them. -- (Joe Howard, Fire Chief, Rowlett, Texas)

Buck Riley

Reading his book will rekindle your emotions, enhance your perspective, and very possibly change your life. -- (Buck Riley, Basketball Coach, Adrian College)

I met George first, then I read his book. George and his book are an inspiration to all. He has shown such incredible strength throughout his life and by telling his story and by people reading his book, he has provided us with the knowledge that hope, love and never giving up is the strength we need in life.

George motivated us at our annual Burn Camp for young Burn Survivors in BC last year. He spoke to both campers and counsellors. He moved all and made us all better people. His book outlines his strength & determination to love life no matter what the cost. Kudos George and Keep Safe Eh!!

This is by far the best book I have ever read. George has lived his life to the fullest and I'm proud to call him a friend! His book has inspired me, and the talks that we have shared have done nothing but help make me a stronger person. If you want a good cry, a smile, or just a good book to read, this is by far the best one. George will change your life forever.

I am very happy to tell others that I have had the good fortune to meet and talk with Capt. George Burk. I purchased one of his books after his talk at the State Firemans' and Fire Marshals' Association Convention, in McAllen, Texas this past June. That was the second opportunity that I had to hear him speak. He is one of the most inspirational speakers I have ever heard. After reading the Bridge book, I ordered two more for a couple of very good friends. It is an amazing story.

I had the pleasure of meeting George at a recent aviation conference. This is the kind of man we meet once or twice in a lifetime. His feel for life and his fellow man is incredible. His writting depicts all of these traits. The story is facinating as well as emotional. At one point I had to put the book down. My emotions got the better of me. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

This story has been and will continue to be a true inspiration to anyone who reads it. I have known Captain Burk for thirteen years and was familiar with his experiences. The book provided me an in depth realization of the chain of miracles that lead to Mr. Burk's survival of such a tragic event. The Bridge Never Crossed causes the reader to reflect on what is really important in life and realize that God has a plan for each of us. I have purchased several copies to share with family and friends. George has been one of the most influential people in my life. He is constant reminder that each of us control our own destiny.

I have had the blessed opportunity to meet Mr. George Burk and talk to him about many of life's struggles. I was unaware that he had written this book until much later when he revealed it to me over breakfast! I would have never guessed by his amazing attitude that he had lived through these horriffic circumstances. After reading his book I was flabergasted. How can a man that has gone through all of this still stand tall and trust in God? I have never been so inspired or so moved by another man's travels. This book, however, goes far beyond telling the tale of a crash, but shows the steps that the soul must take to live after such an accident. This story plants itself in the readers' hearts becasue they can relate on a small level, and can appreciate his ability to turn to God in the midst of such trials and tribulations. I believe that there are Earth Angels all among us, and I truly feel that Mr. George Burk is one with a message sent straight from God.

Non-fiction 'not my thing' but this incredible story would not let me go. I continued reading long into the night and my brain will not release this story. I hate preachy books but George shares his mericle and beliefs with a wonderful message about life. This is a book everyone should read and then send a letter to the author for a continuation.

I loved the title of this book, even if I hadn't heard George's unbelieveable story first, the title of the book alone would have piqued my curiosity. Thank you to George for sharing his story with us all. He truly is a survivor and a hero in my eyes!

This is what 'The Bridge Never Crossed' gave me - perspective and renewed appreciation. Reading George's amazing story of survival and triumph will give you a new appreciation for what you have in life and what you take for granted. His experiences certainly provide one with an entirely new perspective from which to view the daily challenges faced by most of us. Those challenges suddenly seem minor and insignificant in the context of George's story. I'm in awe of what he has overcome, of how deep his reserve of strength was and how he found a silver lining to a nightmare. His story will get you through those 'bad days'.

This book was so special to me because I have known George Burk for over 5 years. All of us have had bad things happen to us. Usually these bad things are short lived. George was in a plane crash that has lingering effects that will be with him always. Yet he is one of the nicest, most genuine people I have ever known. He has a wonderfully positive outlook on life. As I always tell him, he is MY TRUE HERO! I highly recommend this book to everyone. Read the story of a man who went through a tough situation and survived to become a wonderful human being. I have given a copy of this book to many friends and relatives as gifts. A MUST READ!

I had the pleasure of seeing George speak at an employee All Hands meeting where I purchased his book. I was moved by George's presentation, but later while reading the book it all CLICKED! I have a renewed appreciation for life and respect for other's. The combined experience has brought the quality of my life to a new level. Thanks George, you're a pretty special guy.

This is a gripping recounting of George Burk's actual experiences. The inner strength of George shines through in the book. I met and worked with George in the 70's. He is a terrific person. Once you start talking to George it is as though the exterior scars melt away and you only see his great strength of character. The recounting of his experiences as a burn patient were so vivid that I felt I was in the hospital with him. If you need a true uplift spiritually and emotionally you must read this book.

I know George Burk personally and after reading his book I feel even closer to him. He is such a wonderful man and you fall in love with him after talking to him for 2 minutes. The book is awesome and I recommend that any one and everyone should read it. I laughed and cried when I read it. Everything George went through broke my heart. My mom is a burn victum (very minor to George's) but going through that with a loved one is very hard. I believe George is the person he is today due to everything he went through just to survive. After you read the book you will have such a warm feeling and realize your problems aren't so big. George has a bigger spot in my heart after I read his book. Do yourself a favor and read it--you won't be sorry.

I've seen George as a motivational speaker and his book is just another feather in his cap. He's a truly remarkable gentlemen. The combination of his faith, humor and fortitude is inspiring. If you, or anyone you ever knew, felt that they were down and out with no where to go, then get some direction from George! 'The Bridge Never Crossed' is a book you'll want in your own personal library and the kind of book you'd give a friend. As the former editor of ARFF News (a publication for aircraft rescue fire fighters and those in related industries), I always looked forward to George's columns on Continuous Improvement. George was a welcome addition as a staff writer.

This inspirational story written with feeling is a must read for anyone feeling sorry for the way life is treating them. Georges' sense of humor along with his ability to recall the horror he endured gives the reader the feeling you are right there with him. His belief in God, refusal to give up when others did is a testimonial to the type of man he is. Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down until I was finished. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has a family member that has been burned or to anyone that needs some inspiration to get them through a bad time in their life. There is an important message for every reader.
