Overview

Tired of Puff Daddy sampling '80s pop classics and Jay-Z borrowing hooks from Broadway musicals? Well, multicultural hip-hop trio Black Eyed Peas provide the ideal alternative for audiences jaded by the monumental egos and uninventive sampling pervasive in today's hip-hop. In 1998, the Peas' boho-hip-hop offering Behind the Front spawned the club hit "Joints & Jam" and a tour with No Doubt. Bridging the Gap successfully picks up where that debut left off -- combining elements of live band performance, old-school funk, and positive lyrics reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets. Inspired by club diva Debbie Deb's 1989 hit "Lookout Weekend," "Weekends" is a hypnotic dance groove featuring jazzy vocals by Esthero. Other guests include Macy Gray on the sassy "Request Line," Les Nubians and Mos Def on the drum-'n'-bass-tinged "On My Own," and Wyclef Jean on the playful "Rap Song." Lyrically, the standout track is "Bringing It Back" -- on which Peas member Will.i.am comments on the materialistic state of rap music: "I know I'm not the only one feeling the void/ Creatively hip-hop is being destroyed." But don't worry. The Black Eyed Peas skillfully bridge the gap between mainstream and eclectic rap. Neo Brentacious
