Overview

The 20th century saw the golden age of songwriting for Broadway. Names like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein, to name but a few magisterial theater composers, represented a standard of craft and invention that remained unmatched. But little by little, talented new Broadway composers began burbling up in the last third of the century, bringing the world a whole new set of popular songs, many of which have become contemporary standards. BROADWAY IN LOVE presents a broad swath of these excellent songs, representing some of the most acclaimed productions of the 1980s and '90s, including "Merrily We Roll Along," "Titanic," and "Jekyll & Hyde," as well as critically praised shows like "Once on This Island," "Parade," "A New Brain," and "Steel Pier." We hear stunning showstoppers such as "Love Has Come of Age," "All the Wasted Time," "Not a Day Goes By," and "The Human Heart." Cleverly interspersed among these newer gems are classics from such earlier hit shows as "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" ("She Wasn't You"), "Hello Dolly!" ("It Only Takes a Moment"), and "The Sound of Music" ("Something Good"). The clever juxtaposition demonstrates how the newer composers have been clearly influenced by the older masters, even while adding their own personal, contemporary vision. Love, it seems, is something every generation needs to sing about.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Broadway in Love collects performances of the Great White Way's most memorable love songs by performers like Bernadette Peters, Linda Eder, and Audra McDonald. A worthwhile album for fans of these divas or for Broadway fans in general.
