Sara Samarasinghe has written an inspiring story about a teenage girl, Angel, facing life's difficult challenges and turning to drugs and alcohol to deal with those challenges. In the end, Angel finds a time-tested method of helping oneself: meditation. At the same time, she inspires others to turn to meditation and starts a groundswell within her school based on what she has found. Broken Angel moves quickly and keeps the reader's attention from start to finish. As in her previous novels, Samarasinghe's skill at capturing the dialogue between the characters, combined with her development of the supporting characters like Brent and Jade, connect the reader with Angel and instill within the reader the strong desire to pull Angel through her challenges successfully. This is an uplifting novel that I highly recommend.
