One of the best books I've read in a very long time. The story line was great and the characters were awesome! Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Cash is giving authors like Koonz and King  a little competition. Hard to believe that he's new. Can't wait to read his next book. He's definitely someone to watch!

I heard about Brood X on twitter.  I picked it up for .99 cents and I was not disappointed.  Seth and Lara are completely unprepared for the upcoming Cicada invasion.  All Seth cares about is his new camera that he is documenting his life with.  His wife is pregnant and they never really try to prep.  The invasion comes and I feel like something like this could actually happen.  I lived through recent storms that were pretty horrendous and watched my neighbors struggle.  Overall, I connected with book and highly recommend this entertaining read.

Reviewed by Arya Fomonyuy for Readers' Favorite Brood X: A Firsthand Account of the Great Cicada Invasion by Michael Phillip Cash is a compelling novel that will undoubtedly appeal to fans of horror, and readers who enjoy books that give them goosebumps. Now jobless, only one thing occupies Seth’s mind — stay close to his pregnant wife, Lara, and use his new digital camcorder to document every journey with the baby. But the news that a swarm of cicadas (Brood X) could invade the entire Northwest doesn’t seem to bother him much, until they surface on his doorstep. With the power grid cut and phone lines not functioning, with food destroyed and no water supply, Seth and Lara must stand their ground against an attack of the horrifying kind as Brood X fights to invade his home and deposit their eggs there. But what can Seth and his wife do against their resilient and vicious force? I am not a big fan of horror, but Michael Phillip Cash’s writing and storytelling skills can’t just be ignored. The author knows how to create action-packed scenes, following a narrative style that is unique and that directly involves the reader. The characters are strong and readers will watch with interest as the couple transforms from a leisurely demeanor to people fighting to survive an insane invasion. Fast-paced and written for readers to have one hand on the book and the other gripping something, the tension builds up rapidly from one riveting page to the next. Brood X: A Firsthand Account of the Great Cicada Invasion is your adrenaline pump for the low days. Excellent!

If you've ever read 'an end of the world' story then you know what Brood X is about as this book is pretty predictible. But it does have some surprises. The main characters are a husband, Seth, who has not yet learned to be responsible, and Lara, his pregnant wife. They don't make the best decisions which causes problems later on. The plot was well written and the characters were developed. I received this book free from NetGalley for an honest review.

Brood X: A Firsthand Account of the Great Cicada Invasion is Phillip Michael Cash's first horror novel. The author's emergence as a horror writer started here with this book. Ironically I have read all of Cash's novels- my favorite fiction author, except for his very first novel. This horror story has everything I have come to expect from a Cash horror novel. This authentic story tells the real-time account of the modern day apocalyptic cicada plague. In fact the reader might even imagine this is a true account of a real wide-scale disaster. In the beginning of the story, emergency personnel obtain a video recording which chronicles the detailed account of the Cicada crisis from the point of a young newlywed couple expecting their first child. In the context of a home video- the tragic and horrific account of the cicada invasion unfolds. The social unraveling of society in the face of an epidemic is authentic and disturbing. Even more disturbing is the graphically descriptive details provided by Cash, of the monstrous and lethal swarms of cicadas with their "protruding red eyes...thick black body... well veined wings... shivering body" that make their presence known by deafening roars and rattles. Local towns were decimated under the literal weight of tons of cicadas. The death toll mounted as the nightmarish insects pierced their victims, filling their helpless flesh with countless larvae. I do not see what would stop Michael Phillip Cash's horror masterpiece from becoming a bestseller. Cash is a contemporary horror writer whose attention and passion for grotesque detail and human emotion is reminiscent of Stephen King. If you are unfamiliar with Cash, and enjoy fast paced contemporary horror- Brood X will not be a disappointment. I could imagine that this story would make a successful transition to a full length horror movie.

We start this story with Seth and Lara. Seth just purchases a camcorder and finds himself with a lot of free time after being laid off from work. Lara is a teacher and learns that she is pregnant. Seth decides that he is going to film the entire pregnancy. Then there are news broadcasts about a giant swarm of cicadas is causing destruction throughout the northwest. It is recommended that you stock up on supplies. Seth doesn’t take this serious and gets a large freezer to appease Lara. Seth is just starting to take this swarm serious when supplies start becoming harder and harder to get. Then an old school friend of Lara’s shows up with her husband needing a place to stay, things start getting complicated. We have the basic struggles of just trying to get along with another couple but then the cicadas start arriving. They destroy power lines, telephone lines, Wi-Fi and other things. Now Seth, Lara, the unborn baby, Marni, and Dominic have to survive as the cicada get worse and worse. I don’t have a fondness for cicada, mainly because of how loud and annoying they are. But I will not look at one the same way again. Ugh! Just the thought of all the havoc they caused and thinking of Dominic just gives me the shudders. This is a short book, and I admit that I just kept reading the pages without a lot of interest in the beginning. But then when things got rolling I couldn’t put the book down. There is a lot of build up with the cicadas and when they show up it gets really creepy fast. This is a short book but very well written. I have read other books by Michael Phillip Cash and have to say that this fits in with the rest, creepy and a good read. This is a great book for those that like thrillers and horror stories. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

I received this book to give an honest review.  This was a good book, kind of weird being as it is about cicada's. I have never like those kind of bugs in the first place so for an author to write about them in a thriller, sci-fi type book makes it more creepy. We start of the story in a hospital where an EMT worker brings in a camcorder and says it needs a USB to work. On the camcorder we get a look into the lives of Seth and Lara who were affected by the cicada invasion. Seth stays at home since he got laid off and at times he comes across as a jerk but Lara still loves him. Lara is a school teacher and we learn that they are expecting their first child. While they should be super excited about having a baby Lara is worried about him finding a job and what are they going to do with this invasion of bugs that the world is making out to seem to be huge.  We watch through the eyes of Seth and Lara as they prepare or at least attempt to prepare for the invasion and having a baby. We see what makes Lara fall in love with Seth and how even though he is a good guy he is still a jerk.  Now there was not a lot of dealing with bugs more of just talk about how they are coming, you need to prepare type thing. I felt as though the author could have done more with the bugs. Yes we get a few scenes where it could be nail biting but nothing over the top freaky. I think just the thought that something like this could possibly happen is what might be considered freaky.  The story is fast paced and it has you wonder would you be prepared for something like this, and will Seth and Lara make it out of this horror alive?

Just when I thought it was semi safe to watch the weather again to what did my much too agile eyes appear Huge swarm of bugs appears on weather radar As if that wasn't bad enough within two days I received Brood X in the mail. This is the only one of Michael Phillip Cash's books I had not read-probably because I don't like bugs and I was shying away from it!! I did do a book reveal at one point-but had never read it. This book takes place in Long Island-much too close to where I live. I am still reading all his newer books-he seriously is one of my favorite authors. Well, with trepidation I opened the book and finished it--shivering all the way through (did I mention I don't like bugs?)When the people of this little town were warned about the Cicada invasion which was about to occur some believed it and stocked up on supplies--others left town (that would have been ME). Seth doesn't really believe any of it and does nothing-even though his wife is pregnant. They end up with house guests and then the unthinkable happens--trillions of cicadas suddenly come up out of the ground. Who will live and who will die and more important will a way to get rid of these bugs be found? Read it to find out! 10 stars (even though I may never sleep peacefully again)

Oh, I usually hate books about bugs. No really, but something about this book really made me want to read it. I don’t think I will ever go back outside “peacefully”. This book has a little bit of it all: pregnancy, marriage, humor, friendship, interesting, grossed out, etc. There is definitely enough in this book to keep you turning the pages, and to keep you on your toes, with your ears tuned in. Michael let the book gradually build into the setting, giving us a better understanding of what will happen. I personally think if it wasn’t for the gradual build then the reader would lose understanding, so I think he did a great job with timing it out perfectly. There are just some topics or conversations that hold my “yeah, right” category or labelled as childish; however, the ending is fabulous, and I bet you will read this book just as quickly as I did. If you like books that can creep you out, make your skin crawl, your heart stop at some places, and hold your breath than this book is for you! Now I wonder if this book will make it to the movies, I think it can!

This book is a gripping novel about a seething cicada swarm invading the Northeast United States. The story follows a young couple, Seth and Lara who is pregnant. An apoplectic swarm of Brood Ten Cicada invade on a hot summer night. The Northeast is thrown back into the Stone Age. The futuristic novel is fiction, but this event may actually happen on some level in 2014. The cicada are real. Some swarm every 17 years and others swarm every 13 years. If both swarm at the same time- look out! When cicada's emerge to feed, humans are also targets. They can insert their long tube (proboscis) into human flesh. The book is a timely prophetic scenario- a chilling must read!

Captivating! Reviewed by Jennifer Hass for Reader Views (8/13) “Fast paced and filled with tension. Brood Ten is the perfect summer read when you’re sitting outside listening to the cicadas sing.” (book description from back cover) I couldn’t have said it better. The author really put the “H” in horror for me. I read “Brood X” really fast. The book is small in size but thick in pages. The chapters seem long but the print of the book just makes it look that way. The cover is freaky, making it perfect for a visual for this story. Thinking about all the pathetic horror movies nowadays, I can’t even think of one that makes my skin crawl, well maybe the “Saw” series. But that is about it. I am utterly disgusted with cicadas and it not only made my skin crawl, it freaks me out when I go outside. I was just sitting on the porch deciding what I wanted to say in my review and I heard the rattlesnake sound of some creepy crawler and came right back inside. I have never noticed this before. I probably always just thought it was a cricket. We have tons of those in Texas. I am not sure if they are cicadas but after reading this book, I DO NOT want to know. I started to tell my mom about the story and she put her hand up and said “I don’t want to hear it! I mean it Jennifer.” Yes we are both freaked out by bugs. This book is so awesome it needs to be made into a movie. If I watched this story on TV I would probably never go outside again. I am rating this book up there next to the movie “Arachnophobia” from the 90s. I love the writing style. It was kept consistent with a narration where all the characters thoughts were able to shine through -- the drama, the love, the humor…just magnificent. The story is based on a married couple, Seth and Lara, in Long Island. Seth is unemployed and a victim of the stock market crash and Lara is a school teacher. They just find out they are expecting a baby. Seth buys a video camera to document the entire pregnancy. What a documentary he will get. Everyone is talking about the cicadas and how they are going to emerge this summer and it will be an overwhelming infestation. Seth doesn’t pay any mind to the warnings to have supplies on hand like the normal hurricane supplies: water, can goods, gas for your car, generators, batteries, etc. Playing it cool, Seth is not concerned. Lara is freaked out, eyes glued to the news taking head to the warning. Their parents are calling to make sure they don’t need anything to prepare. Everyone is worried except for Seth. As the story progresses, they take on a couple of friends that have fallen on bad times - Lara’s best friend, Marni, and her boyfriend. Will the lack of preparation make them suffer? With all the chaos rapidly unfolding, I found myself read faster and faster to get to the next page. My heart stopped a few times, I am sure of it. If you want a bug-infested horror story that will make your skin crawl and you can take it….. “Brood X: A Firsthand Account of the Great Cicada Invasion” by Michael Phillip Cash is a must read. This is the best book I have read so far in 2013!

5 Stars- Skin crawling awesomeness! Brood Ten is the story about a couple on Long Island who just found out that they are expecting a baby in the summer. Seth & Lara are married and getting through some hard times. Seth has been laid off and is on unemployment while Lara is a teacher. Of course, Lara needs Seth to get out there and find a job before they completely go through their entire savings. Since they are expecting a baby, Seth runs out and buys a video camera to document the pregnancy. While watching the news, there is a warning of an infestation of cicadas expected in the spring. Lara is immediately freaked out and urging Seth to prepare. Seth doesn’t take head to the warning and continues on about his daily life. Every trip to the store he finds that supplies are running out. Everyone is buying all the batteries, bottled water and all the can goods the store could possibly carry. Playing it off like nothing is going to happen, Seth ignores Lara’s pleas to pay attention. Seth continues to assure Lara that there is nothing to worry about. The couple decides to take in Lara’s best friend Marni, and future godmother of their baby, and her boyfriend who had also fallen on hard times. Seth and Marni have a love-hate relationship that makes for a bit of drama in the house. Marni and her boyfriend seem to be leaching off of the couple. Seth and Lara are paying for food and shelter for these two and its getting under his skin. The story unfolds slowly as I learned about the characters and then bam! All hell breaks loose and the cicadas are invading. Seth is surely regretting not preparing with batteries and water. Lara is coming close to her due date and there is no power, cell service, water or food supply. They are stuck. Their relationships are put to the test in the quest to survive. But will they? Brood X made my skin crawl. The writing is breezy and I found myself turning the pages faster and faster as I read along. My heart was throbbing and I was grossed out. There hasn’t been a ton of books or even movies lately that make me feel this way. I can imagine I would cover my eyes if this were a movie. It freaked me out enough to keep me from going outside too much. I keep hearing cicadas outside. I never noticed them before. EW! I was so pleasantly crept out. I even emailed Michael to tell him his book was disgusting and I loved it. It’s one of those things where I couldn’t help myself. Brood X put the fear of cicadas in my soul and I have to say that this is one of the best books I have read all year. If you want a read to scare the hell out of you, pretty quickly, Brood X is where it is at! This book is movie-worthy!

Being from the Midwest and especially from the country section, I know all about the noises of Spring and early Summer. It is not uncommon to hear birds, crickets and cicadas chirping their mating calls or for that matter to see them. So, to read a book that puts the bugs, cicadas in the forefront of the story did not seem like it could be that big of deal. I could have not been any more wrong! The thriller book, Brood X by Michael Phillip Cash starts out in a typical upscale suburbia with the characters of Seth and his wife, Laura. Seth has just bought a new camcorder and has found out Laura is pregnant with their first child. His intention is to use his camcorder to record Laura's pregnancy. The story moves into anything but typical as they begin to hear stories of a great cicada invasion, dubbed Brood X, that is going to be hitting their area. The hype of it causes neighbors to begin preparing in mass as stores sell out of everything. Seth ignores the warnings but appeases Laura with some things like a brand new freezer to stock food. As the story unfolds, Laura's college friend, Marni and her husband, Dominic literally move in to Seth and Laura's lives. The inevitable drama ensues as they try to live together in some semblance of harmony. On one lazy afternoon of swimming pool side, the first of the invasion begins with a sting to Dominic's chest. From this first incident the plot thickens as more and more cicadas arrive. Unprepared, Seth, Laura, Marni, and Dominic find themselves in a dire situation where death and destruction seems to come commonplace. Sadness and fear are prominent in Seth and Laura's lives and replace the happiness they should be enjoying at this time during Laura's pregnancy. Seth promises Laura that he will protect her and their unborn baby throughout and learns a bit about himself and the friends along the way. All the while everything about the brood invasion is documented on the camcorder. What happens to Seth, Laura, their unborn baby, Marni and Dominic is left up to you my readers to find out for yourselves. In many twists of writing, Michael Phillip Cash weaves a horrifying tale of what the real life brood of cicadas could be like when they wake up from a 17 year sleep. Although admittedly I am not a fan of the thriller genre, I found this book to be excellent and kept me wanting to read more. This book:5 stars! ~Naila Moon
