Mr. Berner's fascination with military and business history in the 19th century are combined here in a lucid account of the gradual growth of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The hardships undergone to produce what were then hi-tech weapons of war are also made clear. Although the pictures appear to dominate the telling of this tale, the explanations Mr. Berner provides make the stories each picture tells come alive for the reader. A fine accomplishment and quite an interesting book for those enthralled by either New York City's history or American military history.
