In "Brookwater's Curse Volume I," writer Steven Van Patten introduces readers to Christian Brookwater, a slave turned vampire. From Georgia to Africa to New York, readers follow Christian,a complex man, as he deals with his internal and external struggles. This debut was an impressive novel. Steven Van Patten gives readers a little bit of everything from fantasy to historical fiction to suspense and thrills. He created a fascinating character in Christian Brookwater. Overall this was a great read but I have to admit that the cover was a huge turnoff. I'm glad I didn't judge this book by its cover. Also there were a few editing issues but not enough to take away from this great read. Reviewed by: Lela 4.5 stars

Brookwater¿s curse is without a doubt the most complete novel I have read in a long time. It offers the excitement, mystery and sensuality Vampire readers seek moments of true passion and LOVE that romantics crave for the witty humor that the sarcastic appreciate all of this in a majestic flow writing and impressive detailed cultural facts. I was taken by surprise with the amount of emotions evoked while reading this book: from laughter to sadness, passion and anger, all the ingredients that make LIFE real. I did not expected to see so many personal facts mirrored in a book written by some one who did not even know me: many of the stories felt like mine and I emotionally ¿owned¿ the book. After discussing the book with other readers, I found out those feelings were not exclusive, we were ALL touched and ¿cursed¿ by this phenomenal author¿s talent. All is left to do is ¿impatiently¿ wait for the sequel (no pressure Mr. van Patten). This is a MUST read book!!

Brookwater's Curse is a riveting, and truly fascinating journey into history from the 1800's during the slave trade to the present with a flare that is spellbinding to its readers. A story that must and should be read by and told to young and old alike. While reading the story of Christian, I was enraged, exhilarated, and enthralled with the turn of each page (to put it simply--I didn't want to put the book down). The book's cover, is very deceiving, the content of the book goes way beyond the injustice of slavery it also brings out the 'dark' side or practices from other cultures that need some rectifying. All in all, this was a delightful book and a must read for everyone. I look forward to the next work of art. I assure you that you won't be disappointed with this book!

I just want to thank Mr. Van Patten for introducing me to his world. I'm a newbie when it comes down to reading vampire novels. I've never been one to sit still long enough to actually finish one but once I started to read his, it peaked my interest and made me want to read more. I found it very hard to put it down. From the opening sequence right through to the very end, I was hooked. Christian Brookwater's character is captivating. Following along with his journey is one that just has to be experienced and I would hope that others climb on board and join Christian in his travels.

This book was a real page turner. Non-stop action and really well written action sequences. The author takes us into the world of a vampire who is struggling with many things in his life. I enjoyed the depth that the author brought to a typically one dimensional character. I felt his pain and the pain of others around him(mental and often times physical). The book offers many plot twists that keeps it exciting and the author describes people and places in amazing detail. I am really looking forward to a sequel.

I couldn't put it down. Brookwater's Curse Volume I is very visual, action packed, and even erotic at times, with an uncommon delivery of the necessary details for character development, that keep the reader enthralled as you get to know the characters better. Steven Van Patten has somehow mastered the paintbrush of the human mind, and in full color you are enveloped in the neck snapping twists of his never predictable plot. Mr. Van Patten spins Vampire lore in a way that I have not seen before. I can't remember when I fell in love with my first vampire tale as I probably hadn't yet learned to talk, that said I know of what I speak in this matter. I highly recommend this rare and intelligent novel to anyone that shares a love for this kind of reading. Brookwater's Curse Volume I is a dark epic for the new age. I eagerly await the release of Volume II and all that follow.
