This is a sweet and lovely picture book. It has the perfect kind of picture-book story, simple yet full and satisfying. Appelt even manages to present the story in chapters, which I don¿t think I¿ve ever seen done in a picture book before. (Not to say it¿s never been done, just that I¿m pretty sure I¿ve never seen it done.) I always admire writers who can create appealing picture-book characters in the fairly broad strokes required by the format, as well as those who can write a short picture book while still including a complete and engaging story. I especially like the shape of it, and the way each chapter builds on the previous ones all the way through the end of the book. The voice is also delightful, which is no surprise after having read Appelt¿s beautiful novel, The Underneath.

A baby and a puppy become best buddies, sharing likes, dislikes, and a favorite blanket. They are raised together with their parents.

Cute, cute book about the evolving friendship of a new puppy and a new baby. Getting in trouble together and growing together on their farm in a rural town. The whole series is very sweet and can be enjoyed by younger children who share the same friendship. I would not use this book for a lesson, but I think it would be a good book for free time.

I read this book to my one year old boy and he loves it. This book is about how friends overcome any obstacle that might get in the way, such as a bath.

Appelt¿s funny and charming tale of the almost simultaneous birth and budding friendship between a boy named Bubba and a puppy named Beau is heartwarming and enchanting. With no apparent idea that they are different species, these naïve babies¿ bond over their shared first traumas ¿ i.e., the laundering of their beloved ¿blankie¿ and their own first baths. Howard¿s simple charcoal and watercolor renderings of Bubba and Beau could capture the heart of the most hardened soul. Their eyes, expressions, and movements are all enchanting. Howard¿s equally charming and amusing renderings of the human and dog parents and the Texas ranch where the story takes place provide the ¿icing on the cake.¿ The result is a book that oozes with life, warmth, security, friendship, and love. Child judges awarded it the 2002 Irma Simonton Black and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature. To accommodate short attention spans, Appelt has even broken the story up into five well-defined chapters. Readers wanting more of Bubba and Beau will not be disappointed ¿ there are already two sequels, Bubba and Beau Go Night Night and Bubba and Beau Meet the Relatives. Highly recommended for ages 18 months to 4 years.
