Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is an adorable, heart-warming, and educational story about the misadventure of siblings Bubba and Squirt. Who says you can’t dig a hole to China?! Bubba’s big sister, that’s who. But Bubba just knows he can prove her wrong. So, with a magical shovel his grandpa found at a garage sale, Bubba begins digging his special hole to China under the annoying and watchful gaze of his sister. It’s all fun and games until unexpectedly, the ground begins to shake. Dirt pours into the hole Bubba so meticulously dug. He’s trapped and can’t get out! Then the hole swallows him and he is transported through a magic portal…right into the middle of a courtyard filled with Terracotta Warriors! Squirt, of course, is right on her brother’s heels, determined to protect and keep him safe. Now the two siblings are stuck in China, still not completely sure how they ended up there in the first place. But, the story isn’t over yet. Before Bubba and Squirt can even begin to grasp their surprising situation, an ancient Chinese ghost appears and orders the pair to find his missing pi, or else they can never return home! Bubba and Squirt must now navigate Chinese culture and people to find the ghost’s missing pi. Otherwise, they’ll be trapped in China forever! Opinion: I found this book to be remarkably entertaining and educational. While the reader follows Bubba and Squirt through their journey, they will subconsciously be learning about Chinese culture and belief systems. The book does not elevate one view point or another; it simply presents the facts as they are, which makes the read all the more enjoyable. I love the characters of Bubba and Squirt! They are completely age appropriate and each has their own voice. The two take turns narrating chapters, making it extremely entertaining to read their interpretations of events. Other characters are also developed well and add different elements to the story, helping it to move along and introduce more twists and turns. One thing that bothered me as I read this story was, surprisingly, the size of the font. It feels way too big, and at times I wondered if the font was enlarged purely so that book would appear to be longer. However, seeing as this book is geared towards those younger than myself, perhaps I am pointing out something that is completely normal for this age category. Despite the distracting font size, I found this story to be funny, cute, entertaining, and educational. I enjoyed reading it for the tidbits about Chinese culture almost more so than the story itself. The author did an amazing job integrating educational facts into a fictional story. This book is highly recommended!

Reviewed by Ruffina Oserio for Readers' Favorite Bubba and Squirt's Big Dig to China by Sherry Ellis is the work of a great imagination; a pulsating adventure with a great appeal to young readers, cinematic and littered with humor. What started as an argument between Squirt and her brother, Bubba, mysteriously plunges them into an adventure they never imagined possible. Just because of a magic shovel and Squirt’s doubts that Bubba can dig a hole to China. But then the hole swallows the kids up and flushes them out in Xi'an, China, where they find themselves surrounded by Terracotta Warriors. But when the ghost of the first emperor of China appears and tells them that they can’t go back home until they find his missing pi, the kids know they are in real trouble. An encounter with a young girl and a grandmother who offer to help them gives them hope, but how can they find the missing pendant if they are being followed? This children's book is engrossing. It is delightful, and from the very beginning the reader is absorbed by the exciting, first person narrative voice. The opening itself is humorous as the two protagonists argue to determine how to begin their story. I enjoyed the way the author allows the worldview of the kids to come out through the narrative. “I’m Bubba. And guess what? I dug a big hole to China. For real! And Squirt didn’t think I could.” Every page is filled with humorous dialogues and exciting scenes, starting with the discussion about the shovel right through to the exciting and adventure in China. The writing is impeccable, the characters well developed and likable, and the pacing fast. Young readers will love the characters and adult readers will also have a lot of fun following these characters. Bubba and Squirt's Big Dig to China is a rollicking ride to read and pass on.

Bubba says he can dig a hole to China, but his big sister, Squirt, doesn’t believe it. Bubba digs with a special shovel, and they're both surprised when the hole swallows them up, transporting them to a dark place surrounded by Terracotta Warriors. What is going on? How did they get here and why? Will they ever get home to their family? Things become even more curious when the ghost of an emperor tells them he needs his missing pi. Is it possible to find the pi in a place where they aren’t familiar? Making matters worse- someone seems to be after them. Will Bubba and Squirt solve the mystery and find the pi? You’ll have to follow along on this adventure to find out! Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is the first chapter book I’ve read by Sherry Ellis. I was curious about it because at the beach I’ve tried to dig a hole to the other side of the world. Mine didn’t work! I can’t imagine trying to dig that deep in a yard! Bubba was determined though. Bubba and Squirt are a very realistic brother and sister pair. I think kids will be able to relate to their sibling relationship. I liked that they learned a lot on their travels about Chinese culture and what a “pi” is. The story weaves in history and interesting facts. This is a great chapter book for kids who are beginning to read longer texts and for those who may have a hard time picking out books. I would recommend this book to kids in second grade and up who like stories with adventure, magic, and humor. I enjoyed reading about Bubba and Squirt’s adventure, and I look forward to reading about more adventures in the future (hopefully).

Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is a children’s book that will take young readers on an action-packed adventure which will entertain and delight them from start to finish. Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is one of the most well-developed children’s stories I have ever come across, and so I am so happy I have discovered this book because books with such a high quality such as this one are rare to come by! It is the sad truth that many children books are not written to a high standard, and I understand why some authors may write their children’s book this way because after all, children mostly want a fast-paced story and to look at colorful pictures, however, this is not always the best option. The child will most likely enjoy the story however they won’t remember it. Personally, as a mother, I look for children books which my children will remember and want to re-read, and Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is that book. Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is an expertly written children’s book with a story that is well developed and memorable and a story that I guarantee children with love thanks to its fast-paced but engaging narrative and the sensational story that unfolds. If you are a parent or know children in your family or friendship groups and want the child to read an engaging story which they won’t be able to stop thinking about, Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is that book! The book is a delight, and Sherry Ellis perfectly excites and charms her young readers from start to finish, and that is why I have to recommend this book to all children. The story of Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is a thrilling one thanks to the enthralling and action-packed moments as well as the unpredictable nature of the book that will have the readers turning the pages with haste from beginning to end. I love children books that involve a journey because usually in the journey the character develops and grows as they overcome events and battles which in turn adds to the development of the character and explores life lessons throughout the book and that is most certainly the case with Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China. Sherry Ellis is an incredibly talented author who clearly knows how to write unique but engaging stories. It was evident to me from the start that Ellis is a passionate writer who surely loves entertaining children with her literature and putting a smile on children’s faces. I loved this about the author but what I loved the most about Ellis’s writing is her remarkable descriptions because they genuinely amazed me. Overall Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China is an excellent book that will captivate readers from beginning to end with its twisty-turny plot and exciting narrative so I, of course, have to award the book five stars! Be sure to keep an eye out for my spotlight for the author which will be live soon!

Have you ever wanted to dig a hole to China? If so, what did you expect to find? Gold? Jewels? A treasure chest? Bones? Did you follow your dream and discover what you expected or something even better? In BUBBA AND SQUIRT’S BIG DIG TO CHINA, an adventure story by Author Sherry Ellis, Squirt tells her brother Bubba that he can’t dig a hole to China. He says he can, so they take the magic shovel that Grandpa bought at t garage sale and set off to see if he’s right. The digging doesn’t go quite the way they had expected and they soon find themselves in a new world. Where are they? Could it be China? Maybe. But they haven’t a clue how to get home. Sherry Ellis has written a story that will have you turning pages to see what happens next. Bubba and Squirt have a mystery to solve and on the way they meet some very interesting characters. The big question is will they find their way home or will the never see their parents again? BUBBA AND SQUIRT’S BIG DIG TO CHINA is a fascinating story of bravery, discovery, and fun that should appeal to middle-grade and even older readers that enjoy and adventure while learning some history along the way. The author has added a Glossary with Chinese words which is very helpful in reading the story. She also shows the correct way to pronounce the words and character names. A recipe for Chinese Dumplings sounds delicious. I recommend this story for school libraries and classes, public libraries and your own library. And if you plan to dig a hole to China, be very careful. You never know who might be waiting for you. Happy reading. ###

Bubba has a magic shovel and is digging a hole to China. His older sister, Squirt knows he can’t dig to China and is in the process of telling him this when they fall into the hole and come out in China surrounded by Terracotta Warriors. If that is not creepy enough, the ghost of the first emperor of China charges them with finding his missing pi. The kids go on the quest for the pi, whatever that is, and find a girl and her grandmother to help them. But they have to be quick because they are not the only ones looking for the pi. This is a great chapter book that speaks directly to kids as they read. You have a magical adventure which is going to teach kids about China. The story is well written and will appeal to kids and adults alike. I love how the story is told directly to the read from both Bubba and Squirt. It helps to draw you into the story. This is the first book from Sherry Ellis that I have read but it won’t be the last. If you are looking for a great story to entertain kids, look no further. I can’t wait to read more from Sherry. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

“Entertaining and Educational” With the help of a magical shovel, siblings Bubba and Squirt find themselves in China among the Terracotta Warriors and paranormal activity! This is an entertaining, fast-paced read that will keep children engaged—it’s the perfect length, and wraps up satisfactorily, leaving room for more down the road. Educational content is well interspersed with action and well voiced characters perfectly rooted in their age. I personally love tales involving magic and the paranormal, and accurate historical content is always a plus. The addition of a glossary of some Chinese words, numbers and names, as well as a Chinese dumpling recipe is fun and helpful. Kids will have fun practicing some pronunciation and maybe even helping mom and dad whip up some dumplings!
