Burning Gold (Bewitching Hour Series, #2) by Mallory Crowe

Trying to keep her mind off the mess of her personal life, Sam Harris throws herself into the training she could never get a handle on as a teen. Maybe if she works hard enough, she can even become a witch who, you know, can actually use her powers. But nothing is free, and if she wants to train, she has to become a full fledged member of the Families.

But when she's assigned one of her first tasks for the Families, to find out who is burning the homes of local witches, she's once again confronted with the man she'd hoped to never see again: Detective Derek Pierce.

Derek is determined to figure out what the witch community has to do with the fires before anyone gets hurt. Anyone human at least. His investigation hits a brick wall when Sam and her family get in his way. Now the only way to find the answers is to work with the one woman he never wanted in the middle of this mess.

Except the person behind the fires is closer than any of them realize. And the closer they get, the closer they become to being the next targets.

Don't miss this fast-paced, dark and deadly original paranormal romance from Mallory Crowe!

Mallery Crowe has another hit series. Characters are well developed. Story has me unable to stop reading. Sex is 18+ but not exaggerated and/or constantly occurring which would distract from the plot. For best enjoyment, series should be read in order. I'm on to book 3!

***THIS IS A CONTINUING STORY. ENDS IN A CLIFFHANGER*** Burning Gold is the second book of Mallory Crowe's new paranormal series "The Bewitching Hour" and it is really good! We pick up about 3 months after the end of the first book "The Bewitching Hour" Sam is now working for and being trained by her grandmother Claudia. While Derek is looking into the fire that happened several years ago on the Harris's property that killed several people and was covered up by Sam's mom. Sam and her new partner/body guard Bastian are looking into a series of fires that are targeting witches when she runs into Derek who is investing the casualties from the latest fire. Sam wants Derek's help because she is new at investing, not sure if she doing it right and she misses him terribly, but she does warns him that Claudia will not be happy when she finds out he is working with them on the same case but he is not backing down. Especially when the next fire causes the dead of two people. Soon they find out that the fires are related to the previous serial killer case they worked on together. The darkness has affected another and now that person is taking out his anger on the witches by going on a literal witch hunt. When Sam gets possessed by the darkness, Claudia has to work with Derek to save her before it's too late. This is a great book that I could not read fast enough. It grabbed a hold of me at the start and did not let go! I highly recommend this book, series, and author! You won't be disappointed. I volunteered to read a pre-release copy for my honest opinion. I likes it so much I bought a copy and I can't wait for the next one!

Book 2 was so suspenseful and intense, I was on the edge of my seat through every page! As I said before, I am not a fan of books about witches and magic, but this story is so much more than that and Mallory Crowe really knows how to tell a great story. We get to see Sam and Derek back together again, after a little bit of a hiccup, and they really are a power couple to be reckoned with. We get to learn even more about this society and Sam's family. You think your family is messed up, well just wait and see. I also am glad we got to see more of Claire and I am extremely intrigued in learning more about her past. All in all, this book is a real page turner. On to book 3! I recommend this book, author and series. I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s.

This book was even better than the first book in the series. You can really see the strong connection the two characters have.

******I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Review Copy of this book***** This story is amazingly written with so much suspense, mystery and baffling magical power amongst the families. Burning Gold begins where the Bewitching Hour ended with the author filling the storyline with much more twists and turns of events to keep you gasping for breath. The plot continues to unravel bit by bit answering the questions in the first book but leaves so many unexpected new questions to be revealed in the next book (cliffhanger). The dialogue truly pulls you into the storyline and makes you feels as if you are a part of it. Now I won't leave spoilers, I want you to read this one for yourself. I will start on the next one "Long and Lost".

SO....NOT.....FAIR.....I am literally on the edge of my seat and a cliffhanger! There is no way I could not get the third book. This is the second book and picks up where the first one left off. Sam and Derek are battling a darkness that seems to want to take over both the human and witches community. With the help of her grandmother's right hand man Bastian, and her friend Jackson, Derek and Sam try to fight off the dark magic. In this book, some questions are answered and more are created. People realize that you can't always trust the people you think you should be able to trust. Events are erased from minds and people die. Derek and Sam become closer. I didn't want to put this one down. I still think it would be better as one book, but it was a very good cliffhanger. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

This book is even better than the first. Sam has never been able to get a handle on magic. She described it to a new friend as if she tried to levitate a pencil it would either do nothing, or zoom around the room causing imminent harm to anyone unfortunate enough to be in the way. As her magic always seemed to cause harm, she had stopped doing magic for ten years, despite the resulting withdrawal symptoms that was sapping her life away. However things are going to change, rather than some random teacher, the most powerful witch in the world has offered to be her teacher. The price her grandmother extracts from her is that she will forget Detective Pierce exists. As if it were that easy! The day she starts her new job as a Sentry, she runs into Derek and they are are unable to keep away from one another. This book is not a standalone but book two in a continuing serialisation. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

Burning Gold is the second book in the Bewitching Hour series. This book should not be read as a standalone and ends in a cliffhanger. There is violence and witch craft. There is hot steamy sex scenes so 18+. The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. This book had a twist on the typical storyline, which I liked. The witch families remind me of mafia families which makes this storyline more interesting. The author did a good job of describing the setting and making the main characters (Sam and Derek) relatable. I do want to find out more about the families and will continue to read the rest of the series.

BURNING GOLD is the second installment in Mallory Crowe’s contemporary, adult THE BEWITCHING HOUR paranormal, romantic suspense series focusing on reluctant witch Samantha Harris, and police Detective Derek Pierce. BURNING GOLD should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up upon the events of book one-The Bewitching Hour. Told from several third person points of view BURNING GOLD continues to follow the search for the truth. In the previous installment Derek and Samantha uncovered the who behind a series of killings but the why and the person in charge has never been revealed. BURNING GOLD focuses on the hunt for an arsonist who is targeting members of the witch community, and possible connections to the people in charge. What ensues is the rekindling romance and relationship between Samantha and Derek as they work together in search of the person responsible for so much destruction, and the growing darkness within. BURNING GOLD is a story of mystery and suspense; family and control; magic and power. Derek is a human caught up in the world of the supernatural but sometimes even he is out of his element when it comes to the darkness that is slowly seeping into his life. His affection and need for Samantha Harris is compounded or obstructed by the ‘family’, and Samantha’s inability to gain control over her own magic and power. The premise is suspenseful and revealing (I had already suspected who was the guilty party ); the romance begins to take hold; the characters are animated and lively. BURNING GOLD ends on a cliffhanger-you have been warned.
