This is the whole point of genealogy research. To find the story of the people who lived and determine how it connects to yourself. By research, interviews and digging through documents, the author has brought together many threads and woven them into a tale of her family. In doing so, she has given us a glimpse of what it was like for the Chinese who came to America in the 1800s. I admire the way she uses quotes from Caucasian publications with their interpretations of events, then explains what those events meant to the Chinese. Rather than simply throwing history at us, she helps us to understand a culture. She does this without bitterness, hatred or judgment, for the facts speak for themselves.
