Business and Public Management in the UK 1900-2003

Combining a survey of the literature with original case studies, McTavish (Glasgow Caledonian U., UK) examines British management practices in private business from 1900 and in the public sector from 1945. In terms of the former he discusses whether there was a change from external market co-ordination practice to the strengthening of internal structures and practices, whether there was a shift from internal management control with the externalization of business activity in the 1970s, whether the wider societal dimensions of business were aimed mainly at business related concerns, and whether business management's societal engagement in corporate-state machinery affected management practices at the company level. In terms of the latter he explores how the professional-administrative structures of the public sector managed the politically inspired resource growth in the post war years, whether there was an attempt by government in the post war years to introduce alternative management practices and structures, whether there were any discernible and substantial differences between the English and Scottish public sectors, how successful the new managerialism was as an externally generated instrument in altering existing management practices, and how substantially public sector management is now framed by the management of external relations.
