Overview

By Your Side by Candace Calvert

ER nurse Macy Wynn learned essential, gritty lessons in the California foster care system: land on your feet and trust no one. She’s finally located the fellow foster child she loves like a sister, but the girl’s in deep trouble. Macy’s determined to help, no matter what it takes. Her motto is to “make it happen” in any situation life throws at her—even when she butts heads with an idealistic cop.

Deputy Fletcher Holt believes in a higher plan, the fair outcome—and his ability to handle that by himself if necessary. Now he’s been yanked from Houston, his mother is battling cancer, and he’s attracted to a strong-willed nurse who could be the target of a brutal sniper.

When everything goes wrong, where do they put their trust?

CHAPTER 1

"Officer, help!"

Deputy Fletcher Holt spotted a woman waving her arms overhead, a frantic flash of purple in the crush of idling cars. Sacramento's afternoon rush hour had been brought to a tire-squealing halt by an overturned gravel truck blocking all four southbound lanes. He'd seen it happen in his rearview mirror.

"We need you ..." The woman's voice strained over a continual, indignant barrage of car horns. "Over here!"

Fletcher signaled back, then broke into a jog, sucking in a breath made acrid by asphalt, car exhaust, and burnt rubber. Sweat trickled beneath his protective vest despite the mild, early June weather. He'd been headed to the Florin substation, end of watch, when the dump truck did its kamikaze dive across the freeway, causing at least a dozen vehicles to skid on gravel and bounce against each other like a Six Flags bumper car ride. It was Highway Patrol's jurisdiction, but there was no way he'd drive on and not help. In the last ten minutes, he'd set out flares, offered his assistance to the arriving CHP officers, and now—

A horn blared: vintage M-class BMW, its driver wearing a business suit, sunglasses, and an openly belligerent look. "What's the deal? When can we get out of here?"

"Hang on.... They're working on it," Fletcher huffed, the edge in his voice coming from more than physical exertion. You're not the only one who's got someplace else to be, buddy. "Stay with your car—be patient, okay?"

He pushed his stride and covered the last dozen yards, coming to a halt beside the vehicle of the woman who'd waved to him.

"Yes, ma'am," he said, noting that she appeared unharmed. "You called for help?"

"Not for me," she explained, turning to point toward the far lane. "Over there, that van. I think someone's hurt."

Fletcher spotted a clutch of people, phone cameras held aloft. No surprise social media was getting a look before first responders. Tweet-a-wreck.

"Thank you. Stay with your car," Fletcher told the woman, relieved to hear sirens in the distance. Paramedics. Amazingly, the truck driver had climbed from the cab without a scratch. And as far as Fletcher knew, there had been no serious injuries. Hopefully that mercy would continue.

"Cop's here!" someone announced as Fletcher approached the vehicle. Even from several yards away, he saw the shattered window and crumpled side panel. It was an older-model minivan with a faded business stencil. Balloons, kites ... kids?

Yes.

Little faces pressed against the remaining windows. And another child was on the ground beside the van. A young woman knelt alongside, offering aid. A teacher? Probably not, the way she was dressed. Black hair, sort of pulled up in a loose knot, a short blue skirt ... long stretch of bare leg, high heels. None of it meant for herding kids or crawling around on a gritty freeway.

The young woman turned for a second to gaze across the lanes. Her white top was smeared with blood.

The story was so great. I couldn't put it down.

By Your Side is a mystery book that leaves too many questions unanswered. It's just not fair when a writer makes us wonder about why someone turned bad or ugly, or why someone died, and doesn't answer the questions she posed. I'm guessing (from an included sneak preview) that some of these questions will be answered in the NEXT book. But I, for one, now don't trust this author. Will she keep writing stories that leave loose ends dangling just so I'll keep buying? My recommendation? Don't get hooked. Just say no to this first book.

"By Your Side" by author Candace Calvert is the first book in her Crisis Team, a Christian fiction series. This paperback book is published by Tyndale and is 429 pages long. The cover shows an ER nurse with an operating room behind her on half of it and a police officer with a crisis scene behind him on the other half. It is an indication that this book will be filled with action, suspense, drama, and danger. It certainly is. The story starts out rolling fast with a sniper and accident on the highway. It keeps the fast pace up throughout most of this book. Every time I thought I would just read to the end of that chapter I found it was too interesting to put down. The author tells the story of Macy Wynne who is an emergency room nurse and Deputy Fletcher Holt who is a police officer. This couple first meet during the sniper incident. Both characters are well developed, complete with flaws. Just like in the real world. Their relationship is like most - tumultuous. It isn't always smooth sailing which makes it interesting. The author does a good job introducing characters to us. We have a chance to get to know them and decide to either like them or not. Not just the main characters either, even secondary characters are lovable or contemptible. Fletcher's mother is an interesting one. Her illness is the reason he has moved. This book has a well thought plot with a fast moving story. There is no chance to be bored. It has a lot of life lessons to contribute. Readers learn the value of faith, family, and friends. The book shows the importance of leaning on God, especially during difficult times. It takes readers through emotional issues we may have gone through or will go through at some point - addiction, mental illness, depression, terminal illness, death of a loved one, trauma, accidents, violence, and more. Throughout all of these tragedies, faith and trust in God is at the forefront. This medical, suspense, action, inspirational, Christian novel is definitely worth reading. I would highly recommend it to anyone. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars. A copy of this book was provided by The Book Club Network for my honest review.

Fabulous beginning to new medical series Candace Calvert begins a new medical romance series, and By Your Side is an excellent first installment. Emergency Room nurse Macy Wynn has learned to be a tough survivor through experiences from her past. She trusts no one except herself and has built a life for herself through hard work and determination. During a traffic accident which resulted in the closing of the highway, she meets Deputy Fletcher Holt, a Houston native temporarily transplanted while his mom battles cancer and his dad completes an out-of-town contract. Fletcher believes God has a plan, but he struggles with who is in control of the final outcome. As the first book in a series, this book obviously could be read as a stand-alone story although the groundwork was laid for Taylor Cabot and Seth Donovan’s tale in book two. Both characters were prominent in By Your Side, and portions of the story were from Taylor’s point of view, but this in no way detracted from Macy and Fletcher’s story. This book dealt with some tough issues – life isn’t always fair, individuals can’t control everything, and people sometimes let you down when you trust them. Macy recalled lessons learned from a former foster mom about what makes a home and family. She also remembered the trust this mom had in God. Fletcher realized that, no matter how hard he tried, the results were still in God’s hands rather than his. This book was a page-turner for me, and I’m not at all doing it justice with this review. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance or suspense stories. (Although there was one scene where someone attempted to rape a woman, but it was not too detailed and was very brief – less than two pages. I would take that into consideration when recommending to younger readers.) To me, the romance was not the main focus of the story. The suspense was almost as prominent as the romance. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and greatly anticipate reading more of Ms. Calvert’s work. I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this book and am so looking forward to the next in the series. Ear Nurse Macy Wynn is a great character. I loved her attitude. When she and Deputy Fletcher Holt meet it is wonderful. There is a good amount of romance and some mystery with the sniper. There is much tenderness and hope throughout this book also. I received this from book fun.org for a fair and honest opinion.

Real to life emergency drama, romance and and a by your side crisis team.. what more could I ask for?? If you like medical drama.. you will like this book! Deputy Fletcher Holt is a born and bred Texan temporarily living and working in Sacramento. He has a very close relationship with his parents and is determined to do everything in his power to help them. ER nurse Macy Wynn has dedicated herself to her career and reconnecting with her foster sister. In her personal life, she tends to hold people at an arms length but she has an immense compassion for her patients. Fletcher and Macy initially clash yet they develop a special connection while evading danger at every turn. By Your Side is a very well rounded book with suspense, mystery, romance, and multiple points of view. Both characters develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationship with God. I will be reading the next book in the series and seeking out more titles from Candace Calvert. I requested the opportunity to read and review this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

I enjoy reading medical stories and this one combined that with law enforcement and lots of suspense. Right at the beginning an accident caused by gun shots from a sniper brings together ER nurse Macy with deputy Fletcher in the middle of an interstate. Macy has lots of sad history from losing her mother at a young age and being thrown into the Foster Care System. Some of it good, but most of it not. Fletcher has his own demons. Even though he had a good home life with a father and a mother, he lost his three year old sister at the hands of a drunk driver and blames his young self for not being able to pull her out from under the car. Not to mention that his mother has battled cancer. Macy keeps coming in contact with the sniper and many begin to wonder if it's a coincidence or if she's being targeted. I got to know the characters very well through the author's writing and came to care about them and what they were going through. Some tense moments had me wondering and trying to guess what would happen next. And most of the time I was wrong. Trusting God in our lives with the plans He has for us was a strong theme throughout. Macy had a hard time trusting and relying on God because of all she'd been through in her life. I was pleased with how the epilogue tied everything together. I recommend this book highly and believe most anyone would enjoy it. This was a standalone but one of the characters, Taylor. Will be carried on in the next book, Step By Step. I'm looking forward to reading it. I received this book from the publisher through Bookfun.org for my honest review which I have given.

By Your Side is the first book in Candace Calvert's new series Crisis Team and is truly inspirational fiction. From the first page to the last, this medical suspense story has action and drama that will keep the pages turning. Macy, once a child caught in the heartaches of the foster care system, has grown up to be a competent ER nurse but not without emotional baggage--trust issues. Fletcher, devoted and beloved son, now a dashingly handsome cop has baggage too--life is not fair issues. Their first meet and greet is during a sniper crisis--and the ups and downs of their relationship begins. Calvert brings a realistic story to her readers, touching on issues that are known to and understood by many--unexpected death, effects of life-threatening illnesses, workplace violence, addiction, and mental illness. The importance of family and friendships and faith in God are key themes. The characters are believable, some loveable, and some not so loveable. One interesting group of people in the book is the Crisis Care Chaplain Service, individuals who are trained to help and be an 'angel' by the side of trauma victims, offering hope to those who have none. From young children, foster sisters and poetry writing aunts, readers will be charmed (or perhaps angered!) by the array of people in this book. This reader is looking forward to meeting some of them in the next book. Can smart and gutsy Macy and take charge kind of guy Fletcher work through the challenges they face? Can they forget the past and move on to a new future with each other? Can they recognize God's plan for their lives and learn to trust beyond themselves to find what will truly make them feel safe and loved? I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

This is the first book I have read by Candace Calvert and I am hooked! I love reading a novel with all of the medical, drama, and realistic text. I was an ER Nurse for many years but even if you don't have a medical background you will not be lost. Candace Calvert does a wonderful job helping the layperson understand what is going on in the book. There is a ton of action and suspense to have you holding onto your seat. I love the relationship and humor between Macy and Fletcher. Even with all of the action it doesn't get lost. Faith, love, romance, suspense, and chance meetings you can't go wrong with this book. Macy is a tough cookie. She is an ER Nurse that has always taken care of herself after growing up in the foster care system. While Deputy Fletcher is fighting his own war helping his mom battle cancer for the second time. God has a way of working things out and putting people where they need to be, this is the premise of this wonderful book. A brutal sniper is on a rampage after both Macy and Fletcher end up in his path. Now he has a target on Macy! Who will win??? All they need is faith and trust but will they find it in time? I recieved this book from The BookClub Network for an honest review.

By Your Side by Candace Calvert is the first book in the Crisis Team series. The book starts out very fast with an accident on a Sacramento highway from a sniper . The story introduces us to Macy Wynne, an ER nurse who just happens to be on the road, and Deputy Fletcher Holt, who has just finished his shift and is on his way to visit his mother. Fletcher is new to the area, moving from Texas to be with his mother who is fighting cancer a second time. Fletcher's mother, Charly, is a community chaplain who helps people following crisis. Her work is put on hold from her illness. Macy grew up in the foster system and has recently found her”sister” and wants to buy a home for them. The story is about happens in the ER as well as a sniper in the area and the events that bring Macy and Fletcher together. Macy is in the area of the sniper and it appears she may be in danger. The story shows us how the characters lean on their faith and trust in God to get them through their situations. I really liked this story, it is very well written and fast moving. I really look forward to reading the rest of the series. I was given a copy of the book by Tyndale and BookClubNetwork for an honest review.

This was a very interesting book. It is Christian romance fiction with a little detective work thrown in. The characters are well developed and interesting. The book does have some areas that are too much for younger readers such as murder and being attacked. But, overall, it is well written. No swearing or sexual content. The story line flows well and it is an easy read. It isn't too easy to skim through, but keeps your interest throughout. The story does reference God in a very nice way. Not overly preachy to turn readers off, but in a way that shows His goodness. Last, but important to me, it was well edited throughout. I would recommend this book to any that like romance and/or the medical field.

By Your Side is an excellent medical mystery/romance. It has the perfect balance of twists and turns with romance added to make for great book. There is adventure, disaster, trust issues, family problems combined with a sniper to make an edge of your seat read. I enjoy this author's books and this one was one of my favorites so far. I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

By Your Side by author Candace Calvert is an excellent crisis care team/police novel. I had not read her novels before, but they are definitely on my TBR list now. Her experience as a former ER nurse is very evident in her writings. The book is fast-paced and fascinating. The characters draw in the reader from the beginning. ER nurse Macy Wynn’s life has been rough. Her mother died early in her life, her biological father wants nothing to do with her, and the California foster care system experience was less than favorable. The only highlights of her early life were the care of a wonderful Christian woman in the foster care years and a girl whom she considered her “sister”. Macy is realistic and trusts no one except herself in any situation. She is an excellent, skilled nurse who devotes herself to medical care. Deputy Fletcher Holt believes in a higher plan and justice. With his father’s work temporarily in Alaska, Fletcher leaves Houston to relocate temporarily in California where his mother is battling cancer. He has feelings for a lifelong friend of his family in Houston who is dating someone else. Time away may give him some perspective. Macy and Fletcher’s first encounter was at a freeway accident in which an overturned gravel truck blocked all four southbound lanes. Macy left her vehicle to respond to a child victim who had sustained injuries. Fletcher tried to lend assistance and free Macy to leave, but she informed him that she was an ER trauma nurse, more qualified to help the victim. Leaving the scene, Fletcher started interrogating an arrogant businessman in a BMW. Fletcher knew that the guy was inebriated and an unsafe driver. Before he could pursue that violation, a sniper began shooting at the stranded drivers. He raced to protect Macy from the bullet spray, shoving her to the ground and causing abrasions to her face. Of course, when she was ready to leave the scene, Fletcher discovered that she was in the BMW with the guy who had been drinking. He forced the issue and demanded that Macy drive the vehicle. In a very short time their first encounter was rather heated and awkward. In their line of work Macy and Fletcher would have many encounters and more opportunities to bump heads. Their story and the underlying stories focus on trust issues, belief, and the importance of skilled medical and police teams who protect the vulnerable. Macy and Fletcher find themselves in the scope of the sniper’s weapon and must unite to bring him to justice. A very engaging and exciting novel that is hard to put aside. I highly recommend this one and look forward to reading the other medical series of this author. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.

I am a fan of medical dramas, and Candace Calvert’s books have been on my TBR list for a while now. This was my first Calvert read, but it certainly won’t be my last! By Your Side is an exciting story! Candace Calvert’s ER expertise is evident and really brings this medical drama to life. With great characterization and elements of suspense and romance, the story entertained and intrigued and left me wanting more. I enjoyed this first book in the Crisis Team series and am eager to read Book 2! I received a complimentary copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for an unbiased review. I appreciate the opportunity to read this story and share my thoughts.

This book is full of suspense, mystery, and adventure along with a little romance. If you like ER stories or CSI mysteries you will enjoy this book, a combination of serial killer and ER drama. Macy Wynn a California ER nurse, is talented and capable. Growing up in foster care helped her learn to fend for herself and trust no-one. When Houston cop, Fletcher Holt, moves to town, Macy's guard comes down a little. She begins to see life through new eyes. She has always run from God because of her difficult past. She struggles with surrendering her control over to Him. Meanwhile, with a shooter on the loose, Macy seems to be coincidentally constantly in his target area. While those around her believe God has a plan for our lives, she feels like her life is falling apart. As the story reaches its climax, both Macy and Fletcher have to discover who they can trust. Is God really in control, are they just puppets on a string, or does He really care about the outcome of each of their lives. There is so much more to this story... trust, forgiveness, love, faith. As you read you will bond with all the characters in the story. Each has a story of their own as they are tied together to help defeat the shooter and rescue those in his path. Candace has included plenty of food for thought in her writing. Your own faith may be challenged a little. I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for my honest opinion.

By Your Side by Candace Calvert is the first book I have read by her and I really enjoyed it. She skillfully showed the trials and the joys of working in a crisis team. The crises team includes the cops, doctors, nurses, and the chaplains, all having very important roles to fulfill. Throw in two characters, both with tragic pasts, just trying to survive everyday life and a crazy sniper who seems to be targeting them and you have a book that will keep you reading long into the night. This is a story that shows family love and desperation and besides the thread of suspense, a growing love between a nurse and a cop. I liked how real the characters seemed by trusting in themselves and going out into the world to do their best to save those they loved. And as we all know, we can’t do these things on our own. It is too heavy of a burden and our heroes will learn this as well. I hope Ms. Calvert writes more in this series as there were a few side characters that I would like to see resolutions to their stories as well. I received this book for an honest review from The Book Club Network, Inc. (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

Great characters in a great romantic suspense novel. This is the first book I have ever read by Candace Calvert. I really love the way she develops her characters. She doesn’t stop with just a couple of main characters that she focuses the attention on. She has really done a great job of balancing out the lives of a number of different people. They all have their own, very well developed and presented personalities. Each one has their own personal issues to deal with. At the same time the main story of the sniper affects all of them. I loved reading how they interact with each other and look out for each other throughout the story. They truly care about one another. The two main characters are Macy Wynn and Fletcher Holt. They both feel that it is their responsibility to fix every problem that comes up. A number of the people around them have a strong faith in God and trust Him. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the paths that these two individuals took as they were trying to learn that it is okay for them to also trust God. The mystery/suspense about who the sniper was caught my attention from the beginning. There were plenty of clues pointing in the right direction but it still had plenty of tension as I was rooting for the police to figure it out and catch him before more people were injured or killed. I received a free copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Last year, in my review of Life Support, I mentioned how I wanted Calvert's next series to start with Fletcher. And guys IT HAPPENED, I was so excited for this like you don't even know. And I am so glad that this story held up to my (probably high) expectations. Fletcher has moved away from his home in Houston, to take care of his mother in California. Fletcher needs to move on from the girl he thinks he loves in Houston (whom you might remember from Life Support), but his mother's illness is also tearing at him. Being a cop, he is used to taking care of everyone and everything. Until he meets Macy Wynn, an ER nurse, who doesn't take anything from anyone. She's grown up hardened, and trusts no one. I think what I love most about Calvert's books are the relationships between the characters. Not just the romantic ones (although thankfully, no insta-love here), but also between Fletcher and his mom, Macy and her fellow ER nurses, even the POV's we get from the chaplains. We get viewpoints from multiple characters, including the sniper, and I love how that ties together. I also love how Macy and Fletcher have this sort of sweet buildup to their relationship. You get to know each of them, and I loved them together. They both had their issues they had to work through, but I felt as if it were more realistic. And of course, the book wasn't just about their romance. There was a sense of mystery and intrigue surrounding the story, and of course I love the parts in the ER, which were very well explained and gave you a sense of actually being in there. Of course, some parts may seem predictable, including the identity of the sniper before it's revealed, but all in all, this was a great story and I can't wait to see how Calvert continues this series.

I have read several of Candace Calvert’s books and have never been disappointed. She always has well developed stories and characters that are so true-to-life and real that they become as personal friends to the reader. Often these characters continue from story to story in a specific series so the reader feels as though it’s easy to “keep in touch.” This book is no exception. In fact, it also adds the element of suspense through the introduction of a sniper early in the story. In most of the incidents where the sniper strikes, it seems that the main characters, ER nurse Macy Winn and Deputy Fletcher Holt, are on scene. Macy, who grew up in the foster care system, is a strong-willed, gutsy gal who is always ready and willing to help anyone in need while at the same time not trusting anyone but herself. Fletcher, on the other hand, has come from a loving, stable family and has some seemingly idealistic views. Macy’s main goal throughout the book is to bring her “adopted” sister to live with her so she can save her from a life of drug addiction. She is willing to put all on the line for this “family” member. What she didn’t count on was to become the center of the sniper attacks and to learn to trust another human being. Fletcher, having to move temporarily from Texas to California while his mother battles cancer, is not looking for a relationship yet finds himself drawn to this nurse who is so full of mercy for the bleeding while closed to things of the heart. His protective instincts grow from caring for her welfare to love. Mrs. Calvert weaves the pursuit of faith in God from two views throughout this book. Some of the characters begin with a basic faith, but when life becomes difficult, which direction will their faith take – shrivel up and die or grow and become strong? Other characters have no faith. They live counting on their own resources to carry them through every situation life will throw at them. Will they realize that God holds the answers to living or continue on their original path? If you enjoy stories set in the medical world, you will not be able to put this book down. It is informative, engaging, and a truly “grab you” inspirational fictional story. I received this free book from Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

Nurse Macy Wynn has secrets that she trusts no one to share. She grew up in the foster care system. The only person she loves like family is in trouble and she wants to provide for her. Macy now finds herself in trouble of a different kind. A sniper seems to have her in his crosshairs. Macy appears to be wherever he strikes, whether it is a freeway, a bank, or near her hospital. Does he have something personal against her, or is it a coincidence? Deputy Fletcher has temporarily relocated from Texas to Sacramento to help his mother who is struggling with cancer. As he arrives on scene for the sniper incidents, he continually encounters Macy . They become attracted to each other and begin to share some tentative experiences – “tentative” because Macy trusts no one and Fletcher thinks he has left his heart in Houston. As the situations become more tense, it looks doubtful that they will be able to overcome their barriers. It also appears that more than one person wishes to harm Macy. I enjoyed this book. Any fan of DiAnn Mills, Irene Hannon, or Harry Kraus will enjoy it as well. From the informed descriptions of the workings of the ER, it is obvious that the author has a professional knowledge. I especially enjoyed learned about the Chaplain corps, and sincerely hope that most large hospitals have such an organization. The epilogue was wonderful. I personally love it when authors “tie up the loose ends”. This is the first in her Crisis Team series. I look forward to the continuation of the story.

Oh how I love the works of Ms. Candace Calvert.  I have read her Mercy Hospital series as well as her Grace Medical series and am ready to read the next book in the Crisis Team series.   From page one; I was involved in this book.  I was on the highway with Fletcher Holt wondering where the shooter was.  I was protecting the innocent people and I was facing a possible drunken driver.  In this book we meet Annie Sims, a child in foster care.  Macy Wynn, an ER nurse who spent time in foster care as a child.  Fletcher Hold, a Deputy, transplanted from Texas to California.  We meet so many other people and have the privilege of living some of their struggles with them.  We also get to live some of their triumphs with them.  Ms. Calvert does not give all her characters a rosy life and we finish the book wondering what will happen with some of the characters.  Like all of Ms. Calvert’s books the characters have real life struggles, that do not end at the end of a chapter.   If you like medical mysteries with some and a side of romance this is the book for you.   Thank you Ms. Calvert for another wonderful book.

By your side is the first novel by Candice Calvert in the Crisis Team medical series. As I stated before she is the first author I was willing to read who wrote medical drama. I am now hooked and watch for each of her books to be released.   By Your Side captures your attention with the first two words:  Help me!  In Candice’s books you're not going to get a fairytale. She writes about real people with real issues.  In By Your Side, Fletcher’s mom is battling cancer and you see the struggles that they go through.  Macy is dealing with her father and her foster sister and how hard it is to want to help somebody when they may not be willing to except the help.   Fletcher is a cop who has moved from Houston to support his family.  Macy is a tough ER nurse who survived the foster care system. In addition to the personal issues of Macy and Fletcher; they are dealing with a serial killer/sniper in their town.  Macy and Fletcher meet in the opening scene of a medical crisis.  Macy also happens to be at the second shooting; is it a coincidence?  I found both Fletcher and Macy to be likeable characters.   Candice also creates fascinating secondary characters with Taylor and Seth.  She gives us enough of their storyline that we are already marking our calendar for when their book is released.    You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.

Macy Winn doesn't trust anyone. Not after what her father did to her. She's learned some hard lessons about foster care and trusting men. She's an ER nurse who loves her job, but doesn't do relationships or religion. Fletcher Holt is a deputy from Texas who is only in California while his mother fights her battle with cancer. Despite everything that has happened to him, he still clings to his faith. The two first meet when a sniper causes a pile up on the freeway. Their lives intertwine in ways they never imagined as they fight their feelings, their beliefs, and a killer. The story opens with a bang and never stops. The medical drama combined with the suspense, romance, and faith is the perfect combination for this story. The characters meshed well with each other. The secondary characters and side dramas added to the depth of the story. I really enjoyed how the author brought in the elements of faith to the story and how the main characters dealt with their issues regarding their beliefs. This was a fun read that also had some introspective spots. I've enjoyed other books by this author and this one was no exception. Definitely a book I would recommend and will be keeping to read again. I received this book free of charge from Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
