Description: The book offers a comprehensive overview of calcium and phosphate abnormalities in chronic kidney disease. It includes detailed chapters on secondary hyperparathyroidism and calcitriol metabolism as well as nephrolithiasis. Even though the title focuses on chronic renal disease, the authors are able to provide a broad overview of calcium and phosphate regulation and dysregulation that has not been published previously.
Purpose: This is an accessible and up-to-date overview. Calcium and phosphate physiology, especially pathophysiology, is probably one of the most difficult areas in medicine to fully understand. With the publication of this book, the authors have provided a useful and easy to read reference for anybody interested in the topic.
Audience: The editor is an internationally known expert in the field of calcium metabolism. The list of contributors includes several senior, well published physicians known in the field. The book targets medical providers from students to experienced nephrologists. The level of detail in the majority of chapters makes the book likely more useful for advanced providers dealing with calcium and phosphate physiology on a daily basis.
Features: Although the focus of the book is on calcium and phosphate abnormalities in chronic renal disease, it also includes related and necessary topics like nephrolithiasis and uremic toxins in chronic renal failure which make the treatment of the topic deeper and more solid. Each chapter can be read independently, but also works well in the structure of the complete book. Some chapters would possibly benefit from the addition of illustrations allowing easier digestion of the text material.
Assessment: To my knowledge, this is the first book to provide a comprehensive approach to calcium and phosphate pathophysiology and management in chronic renal disease. Each chapter is well structured and referenced, aiming to include current medical knowledge. Some chapters which clearly deserve extensive focus given the title of the book (e.g. renal osteodystrophy) could benefit from a more comprehensive review, whereas others (e.g. nephrolithiasis) seem a bit too detailed and not always directly related to the main focus of the book.
