California Callin'

A credible songwriter in his own right, Bill Wence offers up a healthy amount of traditional no-frills country music. The longtime keyboardist for Tom T. Hall has a style that calls to mind John Hiatt during "You're the Best." The title track is a bit more up-tempo and doesn't quite work as well, but when Wence chooses softer ballads with strong narratives, such as on "I'll Send My Love," as well as "I Wanna Do It Again," he strikes a chord that is timeless and true. The mandolin also works well on the track. It seems the shorter the song's length, the better it comes across to the listener. "Lady Lovin' Night" and the bouncy "Quicksand" are good examples of being short yet sweet. Accompanied by an array of backing and lead vocalists who duet on several tracks, Wence sounds a bit too polished on "I'm Still Lovin' You," a track that sounds a bit too busy with too much happening. Another asset to this album is that while it's traditional in its tone, the mood tends to be always upbeat and to possess a certain California vibe deep within each track. "Hold On" has the lap steel guitar, but with an almost Hawaiian or summer rhythm. Perhaps the best song is "Break Away," a strong duet with Jonell Mosser that has a soft and subtle arrangement. But "This Is a Hold Up" deserves an honorable mention as well for its laid-back feeling and quality lyrics. While it may have been a long time in the works, this album is well worth the wait.
