Call Off the Search

Call Off the Search, the debut disc by newcomer Katie Melua -- born in the Eastern European republic of Georgia and raised in part in Northern Ireland -- topped Dido's Life for Rent on the U.K. album chart in early 2004. Now the disc -- which has already been certified platinum in the U.K. -- makes its U.S. debut, ushered in by the catchy single "The Closest Thing to Crazy." Fans of Norah Jones will enjoy the 19-year-old Melua's sound, which incorporates jazz and pop.

Katie is simply amazing. I first heard her on late night TV. I took a chance and bought the CD. After listening to the CD it's no wonder she is multi-platinum overseas. Wake up America!

New interpretations of standards that are heart-melting, including the all-time great Vicki Silvers ballad, "Learnin' The Blues". If you don't turn to jelly hearing this, the ultimate torch song, I just flat feel bad for you

Katie Melua's CD blew me away! Wow, what vocals and music. I am giving this CD to everyone on my list this Christmas, and all I want for Christmas is a live concert (which I hear will happen at Joe's Pub in NYC in January). Katie's music is AWESOME!!!

I feel like I've happened upon an amazing musical experience. I'm buying "Piece by Piece" right now, zealously writing reviews on the internet whereever I can, extolling Melua's musical virtues. What a shame she's not been better promoted on the American music scene. She puts all other "big-time" contemporary female artists to shame with that sexy, torchy lilt in her voice echoing the great ladies of the blues. There are even hints of Broadway vocal strength, fading out to a tender, heart-tugging vibrato. Title song is an aphrodisiac and is THE song for all you hopeless romantics out there.

My new favorite artist. If you like Eva Cassidy or Norah Jones, you'll love Katie Melua. She has a sound that is definitely her own, and you won't be able to stop playing her CD!

Lovely and Outstanding - those two words best describe the album.

I mostly recommend this album to anyone looking for new voices that renew the old tradition of fabulous female singers coming from the 60's. Not clouding the astonishing Joni Mitchel, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, Sandy Denny or Laura Nyro, KATIE MELUA give us here a remarkable testimony of her craftsmanship and skills in a album full of joy.
