The Calling of the Grave by Simon Beckett

Forensics expert Dr. David Hunter returns in Simon Beckett's menacing new Sunday Times bestselling thriller.
When DI Terry Connor turns up on David Hunter's doorstep, it's an unwelcome reminder of the past in more ways than one. The two used to be friends before Connor's behaviour caused a bitter rift. And the news the policeman brings is even less welcome: the psychotic rapist and murderer Jerome Monk has escaped from high security prison.
Monk is a name all too familiar to Hunter. Eight years before he was part of an ill-fated Body Recovery team assembled to try and find the graves of Monk's teenage victims on the bleak expanse of Dartmoor. Only one of the missing girls' bodies was ever found, and Monk's own controversial involvement in the search led to more failure and a violent denouement. And now Monk is on the loose — and seems to be targeting anyone involved with the original search.
Then Hunter receives a mysterious appeal for help from Sophie Keller, a young woman who also worked on the operation. He suddenly finds that the past is far from dead and buried. Neither the events unfolding now, nor those from all those years ago, are quite as they seem. And as the maniac's bloody trail edges ever closer, Hunter is forced to question who he can really trust. Especially when his own life depends on it.

This book is 283 pages long, perfectly edited and extremely engrossing. While it is an across the pond novel, there in none of the confusing slang or a difference in grammer to cause confusion. Some words are spelled a bit different, but this does not make a difference in the story. There is no sex, cursing, religion, romance or homosexuals. There is violence and murder. The plot was great and I really liked the hero. He was not a PI! I even liked Monk. There was murder and violence, neither of which was very graphic. There was blood and bruising, a few bang em ups and punch em outs, hidden graves and lots of action. The female lead was a very unlikable person. She was mean, manlipative and sarcastic. I figured out whodunit about a third of the through, but could not figure out why until near the conclusion, and a very good conclusion it was. I did not have any trouble down loading this book from B&N at all. I really enjoyed this book. It was perfection in ereader format. I intend to read more of this author. Do not expect chick lit with this book. It is an action packed, adventure, murder mystery. Mystery lovers, both hens and roosters will enjoy this book. For readers, ages 16 and up. AD

I enjoyed this book very much. Easy to read and get a picture of the characters. The story was good, believable, and interesting up to ...and including...the end.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to read this book....I've been waiting since it first came out and have read every other one in the series and love them all. I tried ordering it once online but was told a few days later that it was "unavailable" and my order had been cancelled. Have tried in store but no one can seem to tell me anything other than they don't have it. ...why list a book on your website at let people order it if you can't get it/don't have it!

Would love to write a review of this book, for which I have waited a long time, but this is the second book from Barnes and Noble in the last month that had originally been published in England a year previously, that I have ordered and then 2 days later am informed that it is "unavailable" and the order cancelled. Why can't the new Equity Group who now owns the company get books from my favorite English authors? Very disappointed.
