PreS-Gr 1 In a similar vein as his earlier ABC book ( Have You Ever Seen. . . ? Dodd, 1986), Gardner has produced a colorful but somewhat less successful counting book. From ``ducks driving trucks'' to ``snakes serving cakes'' chil dren will enjoy the absurd juxtaposi tions, the nonsensical rhymes, and the bold graphics splashed against vivid monochromatic backgrounds. It is as a concept book that the production as a whole is flawed. No attempt has been made to utilize sets in order to simplify counting for beginners; some pages, de spite their clearly defined objects, seem visually busy and difficult to sort out (especially the eight wiggly snakes carry ing single, double, and triple-layer cakes); and finally, the recap at the end places the numerals (from 1 to 12) and their word equivalents on entirely sepa rate pages from the corresponding line- up of countable animal silhouettes. This is an entertaining book that, with more care in layout and conception, could have been a useful counting book as well. Kristi Thomas Beavin, Arlington County Public Library, Va.
