Description: The authors have collected an enormous amount of material on cannabis and its potential for use in the clinical setting. The history, botany, pharmacology, toxicology, and therapeutic uses of cannabis and related natural and synthetic cannabinoids are discussed in depth. The internationally respected contributors bring a wealth of experience in clinical applications and research in this area to the book.
Purpose: The editors wish to clarify the body of knowledge on cannabis and its potential for medical therapy which, considering the controversy surrounding this subject in both the medical community and lay press, is a worthy goal. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the contributors, there does not appear to be the scientific evidence necessary to support this goal.
Audience: This work is intended to be a resource for clinicians and researchers carrying out both animal studies and clinical trials. The contributors are recognized authorities in the areas of cannabinoid research, pharmacology and toxicology.
Features: The book's 38 chapters are grouped into six parts and arranged logically from botany and history to pharmacology, clinical indications, and risks. Although the history and pharmacology are quite interesting, the meat of the book is the discussion of the therapeutic effects and side effects of cannabinoids. Many of the authors stress the potential uses of cannabinoids based on animal studies and what the direction of future human and animal research should be. The black-and-white illustrations and tables are average for a book of this type and some would benefit from color enhancement.
Assessment: I was disappointed with the book as a whole. I expected some strong evidence for the use of cannabinoids in clinical medicine, but most of the conclusions were "there is not enough evidence," or "the side effects outweigh the benefits," or "the drug was not better than other standard treatments." Although this book is the best compilation of the available material on cannabis, it doesn't appear that enough scientific data exists to support many of the claims of its medical use.
