Canyon Ranch - CDE by Cain Berlinger

Sex, romance, adventure and violence. Will love triumph or will the bad guys win?

Drama builds from the beginning of this novella when former ranch hand, Whip Dagger, gets framed for crimes he didn't commit. Asa Ross owns livestock, the town, the land, and three fine strapping sons. Complications arise when Whip falls in love with the handsome yet indecisive Monty Ross. Whip wants to 'marry' Monty, but someone would rather see him jailed for life before that happens. Is it Daddy Ross or one of his sons that's out to torpedo Whip's romantic aspirations? More than one adventure pits these black cowboys against each other.

In the dry heat of the desert it took a matter of minutes for the flames to spread from one structure to the other. The Ross Hotel burnt like brushwood and soon the saloon would catch fire as well as the surrounding structures. Whip Dagger sat on the outskirts of town astride his black stallion casually smoking one of his trademark black cigars.

Watching the townspeople, through his one good eye, struggle to save their fragile buildings made him laugh aloud. It would have really been fun to sit on the hill and pick them off one by one with his rifle and six shooter. Setting the fires was easy, letting them struggle to survive was much crueler, better justice. He cut a dashing figure as the sudden gust of wind whipped around him making his coat tails fly behind him like a black cape. The gust blew his hat off and he jumped from his horse to retrieve it, barely catching up to it.

Standing on the edge of the hill, he adjusted his hat, adjusted his eye patch, and re-lit his cigar smiling as several more structures burst into flames. What started as a giggle soon escalated into full scale laughter. Crushing his cigar beneath his black suede boots his spurs jangled as he mounted his horse, taking one last look at the town in distress before turning and heading south toward Canyon Ranch, the Ross family compound.

The Ross family would pay for his years in prison. The Rosss were the most powerful black family in the west and it had all come about as a result of their productive ranch, and the expertise of their former foreman, Whip Dagger. Years in prison for cattle rustling had taught him lots of new things that he couldn't wait to try out on Asa Ross and his pretty boy sons. He whipped his horse to speed and headed in the direction of Canyon Ranch.
