Obert and Barr have compiled a listing of children's choice award programs in the last 50 years and the 1025 books honored through them. Beginning with a history of these awards, this well-organized volume discusses trends toward division of awards by age, criteria, types of books recognized, and committee evaluation procedures. Chapter two provides the steps to create successful programs in schools, possible promotional activities, use of electronic programs to track reading, ideas for record keeping and voting, and a plea for increased participation in the nominating process and expansion of the various award programs. The bulk of the book offers a chronological listing of each state's awards. However, the entries are not annotated, and out-of-print status is not noted.
