It is based upon current national guidelines and evidenced-based research on cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and obesity. The authors, experts in the area of cardiovascular nutrition, have created a nice mix of basic science of lipid metabolism, current diet and exercise strategies, and their applicability to well known diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and the metabolic syndrome.
Purpose: Written as a reference for dietitians, physicians, nurses, and physician assistants working with patients who are at risk for or present with CVD, this book is a valuable resource. It contains helpful information to manage patients in a primary care practice or subspecialty cardiology practice. In formulating this extensive, well-written book, the authors have more than met their objectives.

Features: The book is divided into five parts, which are subdivided into chapters. Part I covers the prevalence of CHD, reviews lipid metabolism and the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. Part II covers coronary risk assessment, based on the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) recommendations. Counseling strategies for behavior modification regarding diet and exercise, and quick nutrition screening tools (WAVE) are included in this section. Part III provides information on prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease. These chapters address the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet, the metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and diabetes with regards to diet and exercise. Part IV covers alternative medicine and dietary approaches, as well as popular weight-loss programs. Part V identifies and discusses special issues for women, children, and selected ethnic and racial groups. This section also has more specific information to aid physicians in nutrition counseling. The figures, tables, and graphics are nicely done and strategically placed throughout the text.
Assessment: This book will serve as a resource for a broad range of healthcare providers who wish to update their knowledge on diet and exercise. The organization of the book is excellent and the language and graphics are easy to follow. This is a comprehensive review of everything caregivers need to facilitate the prevention and care of coronary heart disease in their patients.
