Title: Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene - Caldwell Ranch Book 5 Author: B. J. Daniels Publisher: Harlequin Intrigue Published: 11-22-2016 Pages: 488 Genre: Romance Sub-Genre: Suspense; Contemporary; Westerns; Holidays ISBN: 978037369945 ASIN B01E34F1DY Reviewed For NetGalley and Harlequin Reviewer: DelAnne Rating: 4.75 Stars A conman's daughter takes refuge with the family she never knew she had in New York Times bestseller B.J. Daniels's latest addition to the Cardwell family saga. Dee Anna Justice had thought that her convict father was her only living relative. Now Walter Justice, fearing for his daughter's safety, urges her to seek out her cousins in Montana. Calling in a decades-old debt, he also enlists private investigator Beau Tanner to protect her. Despite their fiery attraction, she resents the bodyguard her dad foists on her. Trust doesn't come easy to DJ. But the warm, embracing family she finds at Cardwell ranch just might begin to soften her suspicious nature, and learning to trust the sexy PI may be the key to saving her life. Once again Ms. Daniels shows her love of her own home state. Bring it to life for the reader. You feel you are there experiencing the scene yourself. The characters multidimensional and believable. Ms. Daniels' descriptive writing is vivid and bold. As always with the name Caldwell in the title and B. J. Daniels' named as the author guarantees a book sure to enthrall and entertain. My rating of "Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.

Spine-tingling and heartwarming contemporary romantic suspense set amidst SNOW! He’d been trying to save this woman in his dreams for years. Now here she was, all grown up, and he still felt helpless. Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene by B.J. Daniels is a spine-tingling and heartwarming contemporary romantic suspense. The setting is gorgeous with most of the action taking place around the Cardwell Ranch located in Gallatin Canyon in Montana at Christmastime. Even though it’s the fifth book in B.J.’s Cardwell Ranch series and straddles her Cousins’ series, Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene works well as a standalone if that is your preference. That said, fans of B.J.’s Cardwell books will be thrilled to catch up with previous favorite characters from both series as they gather together for their holiday celebrations. This is the story of Dee Anna “DJ” Justice and Beau Tanner. DJ has had a nomadic life. She and her secretive con-man dad have continuously been on the run from people he’s swindled and other enemies known only to her father. Now her father is in prison serving time for his misdeeds and DJ wants answers. Her apartment has been broken into; yet the intruder left only a rag doll and an old picture displaying people DJ doesn’t recognize. Instead of answering her questions, her father directs her to Cardwell Ranch to meet relatives she didn’t know existed. However, unknown to DJ, there’s also an outstanding lucrative reward for her death. When Beau was ten, his father had scammed DJ’s dad. Beau has never forgotten the sight of his five-year-old daughter’s eyes as she clung to her father. Beau had wanted to save her then. Now, Beau is a private investigator and DJ’s dad is calling in the favor Beau owes him for letting his own father off. True to his word, Beau agrees to protect his daughter while she is in Montana. The problem is that Beau has no idea what he’s protecting her against. I adored how DJ’s and Beau’s chemistry was instantaneous but their actual romance was slow building – intensifying from the original connecting thread of internal scars from each of their difficult upbringings. Their heart-wrenching romance is as appealing as it was unexpected. Beau is strong, capable and honorable. DJ is a survivor and one stubborn woman, but that doesn’t stop a determined Beau from sticking to her like glue. However, Beau has his hands full just trying to keep her alive. B.J.’s books are all must-reads for me. I know that I can rely on B.J. to deliver a story that is fresh, exciting, action-packed and emotional. Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene is an excellent addition to B.J.’s Cardwell incredible Cardwell books with plenty of her signature tangled mystery elements incorporating lots of danger and featuring two broken characters needing saving. It is perfectly paced and solid from start to finish. I had to read it in one sitting; Putting it down, once I’d started it, wasn’t an option. I highly recommend Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene to anyone who enjoys excellent romantic suspense. My full review is published at Reading Between The Wines Book Club. Please check it out there.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. B.J. Daniels takes us back to the familiar Cardwell Ranch in this book. This time the real Dee Anna Justice comes to the ranch – in search of answers that her father will not give her. Walter Justice fears for his daughter’s safety and sends her to the ranch to meet the family she never knew she had. At the same time, he contacts Beau Tanner to collect on a very old debt. Dee Anna loves her new found family, it’s what she’s longed for all her life. Soon, however, she discovers that she has brought danger with her on her visit. Her only hope is Beau Tanner and she’s reluctant to put her trust in anyone, let alone this man who has ignited feelings in her. Beau, on the other hand, is equally reluctant to trust, but his feelings for Dee Anna have him thinking that perhaps his life has been missing something. As always, B.J. Daniels delivers a quick paced story full of romance and intrigue. Her characters are well developed. You will find yourself immersed in their lives and hoping for a happily-ever-after ending. I especially like the way she carries us through the current story line and weaves in the past so we understand why neither Beau or Dee Anna are trusting people. And she brings us back to Dana and Hud and the Cardwell siblings to bring us up to date on how they are faring. This is one of the things I like best about B.J.’s writing – she always brings back the people from previous books in that ‘area’ and gives us just a bit of where they are now. She brings the current story to a satisfying end and leaves us wanting more. Always wanting more!

Dee Anna Justice has had only one constant in her life and that is - no constant! She's never been settled anywhere, her dad is a conman, she doesn't have any other family and she never collected anything. Usually, she had to pick up and leave somewhere in the middle of the night so often that forming attachments was useless so, other than a small rag doll, she didn't have anyone but her father. However, her father is now in prison and she was starting to feel.....safe! She has a job she likes and is starting to feel settled a little bit until all of the sudden she finds another "rag doll" just like the one she had as a child, on her bed one day and her life suddenly changes. Her father fears for her safety so urges her to go to Montana to visit cousins she never knew she had and calls in a debt of a PI, Beau Tanner, to protect her. She also finds out her mother didn't die in childbirth like her father told her and her mother's family didn't even know about her all these years! To say her world is completely topsy turvy is an understatement! BUT, someone is trying to kill her and Beau has his work cut out for him in keeping her alive! Another winner from this author. I love visiting Cardwell Ranch anytime! I love it that we get to keep reconnecting with characters from previous books too! My favorite thing to do!!!

Now Walter Justice, fearing for his daughter's safety, urges her to seek out her cousins in Montana. Calling in a decades-old debt, he also enlists private investigator Beau Tanner to protect her. But the warm, embracing family she finds at Cardwell ranch just might begin to soften her suspicious nature, and learning to trust the sexy PI may be the key to saving her life. My Thoughts The first time we were at the Cardwell’s Montana ranch an imposter posing as DJ Justice had wormed her way onto the ranch of Dana Cardwell Savage’s and threatened her, her family and generally caused quite an uproar as well as bringing a pall on future relations with the real DJ herself. However when the real DJ arrives in Montana she finds herself feeling not only welcome but for the first time in her life she is in a place that calls to her, a place that feels like home. Reinforcing this she also has vague memories of a long ago time when her father apparently came to Montana with 5-year-old DJ and while there she met and was befriended by then 10-year-old Beau Tanner. Now 30 years later much to her dismay the very sexy, very grown-up version of that boy has been contacted by her imprisoned father so Beau will provide her protection while she visits her cousin Dana. From this point on is where the sparks start flying and the story takes off down a twisted path that leads to DJ finally finding not only family but love for the first time in her life. Protagonist is identified early, motive established, loyalties drawn, family secrets revealed, drama abounds and yet this still manages to come through as an engaging romantic suspense that says ”Who needs the Ewings when you have the Cardwell family?”. Very much enjoyed, love the fact we know early on the bare facts and as the story builds so do the reveals and suspense. The romantic angle was nicely developed and even though ending was heartbreaking the joyously heartwarming epilogue made up for it completely, as happens with almost every story read in my favorite romance genre.
