Children's Literature
Here is a complete guide for the new owner of the most common U.S. household pet, the cat. Cats are furry, affectionate animals, but they have needs their owners must meet. In this book, Susan Ring addresses some of the fun as well as the responsibility. She explains the supplies that cats need, their veterinary care requirements, their grooming needs, their social behaviors, their feeding requirements, and their need for play. She also provides some basic information on their life cycle, their development since prehistoric times, the different breeds available, and their physical traits. Ring explains declawing and recommends that cat owners talk with their veterinarians about spaying or neutering their animals. Cat lovers will be charmed to learn that they are good company; the list of cat aficionados here includes Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Sir Isaac Newton, Mark Twain, and Daniel Boone. While this book could benefit from some discussion of the merits of "indoor only" vs. "indoor-outdoor" cats, it is still a solid beginner's guide to cat ownership. This is part of the "Caring for Your Pet" series. 2003, Weigl, Ages 8 to 12.
